“What’s stopping you from ditching $msft?”

My sister in FOSS, have you even heard of UX?

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@WanderingPoltergeist @Binder Curious what you mean by "UX". I do things like start programs, navigate files, and that sort of thing. I still use the Mate desktop, which is 2002 technology and does exactly what I need. Maybe I just have a different use case. I also use a Windows computer on a daily basis and kind of hate it.

Afternoon! Been too busy to tweet meeting up with my auntie, uncle and cousin who are in west Wales on holiday. Not seen them in person for over a decade! Tired from peopling now. How’s everyone’s day going? The sun has just come out here

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@purplepadma I have to finish grading exams and submit course grades. And I have to do administrative work. I think we know how my day is going.

What cracks me up is when you go to a restaurant, and they ask if you've been there before, and then they say, "Well, we do things a little different here", and then it's exactly like every other restaurant, but more expensive.

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@educoder @RickiTarr Sounds like something they'd do after the pandemic, and then they'd ask you to leave a 30% tip that goes to the owner.

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

I was way too old when I figured out a human couldn't actually get sucked down a drain or flushed down a toliet. I used to cling to my little brothers, and pull them out of the bath any time my Mum would pull to plug.

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr My mother got upset because I would use dish soap to make bubbles while taking a bath, and then she'd have to clean out the tub when I was done. She told me I was going to inhale too many chemicals and die.

I'm not sure about the science behind that, but neither was my mother, so it was a white lie that saved her some work.

Adding a tip button begging you to pay their employees

"By the way, now that you've ordered, would you like to pay my employees so I don't have to"

It looks ridiculous

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

I don't even know what the tip would be for or who would get it

It's literally a donation

Colleges could do well with this strategy

"You just paid tuition. Would you like to add something for the professors before class starts? They'll know if you don't."

I'm honestly considering a paid verification program in Pixelfed to help sustain the project long term.

It would be a centralized list, and would be present in clients, regardless of server.

A blue checkmark would not only help our project financially, but would also provide a trusted visual mark of verification.

Thoughts?

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup I prefer the Obsidian Catalyst plan. It's a one-time payment of $25 or more. You get a badge that shows you're a supporter.

Verification would be a business for you and it would make me feel like it's a VC-funded startup.

My other thoughts on car dependence:

I didn’t feel constrained by not having a car or driving license, growing up somewhere with excellent transit, because that was freeing. No one had to pick me up from school. No one had to send me to school. As a kid I could explore malls and food with friends after school. Some days I even took the bus to another country (Malaysia) for lunch before returning. I could work any job, stay super late, go anywhere, almost any time.

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte I lived in Seoul for six months without a car. It was great. With the notable exception of buying groceries, because you can only carry so much by hand.

I'm working on an R project with a bunch of data and code files, with thousands of lines of code spread across a bunch of files. I've created a package to hold everything as that relieves the stress of keeping track of it all.

I'll admit I don't do this as often as I should. When I do, I document all the functions and use attributes to document the data series.

This is the kind of thing gives you that isn't appreciated or even understood by the critics.

Not part of the left or even a Democrat but I wonder why they aren’t rallying around Biden the way the right has their guy.

Biden loses and it’ll be at least 100 years before there’s a legal abortion anywhere in the US. Probably the end of gay marriage. Possibly illegal to be gay or trans. The end of climate legislation. Probably the end of the ACA.

In spite of this there is more apathy on the left than 2016. They get what they deserve I guess. They didn’t learn when Roe was overturned.

It's been some time since I was a teenager. Things have changed. I need a place for my kids in to hang out in a small town. I chose this place to be a mall. I haven't specified the country in which my story takes place for numerous reasons, but is this still something kids do these days? Or is it completely out of date?

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@anderlandbooks I currently have a son in high school. Some kids that age do hang out at the mall, but from what I've seen, it's more online interactions or meeting at the park or rec center.

Last night, my husband asked me to look at something that felt weird on his back, and honestly, it looked like a cancerous mole. I told him he needed to go to the doctor this morning, so he did. The Nurse Practitioner said, Yep, that looks gnarly, and took a biopsy. Now we have to wait for a week, which feels way too long. I know basal cell carcinomas are very treatable, and almost never lead to death, but I still feel anxious. Has anyone else dealt with this before?

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I had the same thing. The doctor cut it off. Came back cancerous, so he went in a second time and took out some more just to be safe. Apparently not very dangerous as these things go as long you don't ignore it for a couple years.

Since, my last post ended up in a long thread about the pros and cons of sports, I'm curious, what is your family and personal history with sports?

I'll go first! My Dad grew up in a Sport's household. His Dad, my grandfather, was obsessed, and he wanted his sons to be too. My grandfather was tall with an athletic build like a swimmer, but he married a very petite 4'8" woman, who never weighed over a hundred pounds. Both my Dad and his Brother were average height with a slight build, neither played sports or were good at it when they tried. Not liking sports became my Dad's rebellion. He became a preacher instead, his Dad grew up in a Preacher's family, and hated it. When I was growing up, my Dad always pushed intelligence and spirituality over physicality, we only had a game on if my Grandfather was there. I got a little of both my parents, I've always been small and plump, what science calls a dumpling (please don't fact check this). I enjoyed group activities and non competitive sports. For instance I played volleyball (very poorly), but only enjoyed it if I was on the B team, and had no pressure to succeed in it. I did go through a brief period where I pretended to be really into sports, because I thought it would impress boys. I'd watch just enough to get highlights. I was basically like Moss in I.T. Crowd. Did you see that ludicrous display last night?!

lance,
@lance@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr My father hated sports. I was obsessed with sports, but didn't get much chance to practice or play, because he thought it was a waste of time. One of the nice things about going to college was freedom to spend as much time on sports as I wanted.

Oddly enough, my father's brother is in the North Dakota Wrestling Hall of Fame as the first college national champion from the state.

My son is heavily into soccer. He's hoping to have a chance to play in college.
