Celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary. A nice afternoon walk, decent meal out at our favorite restauant, and champagne while relighting our wedding candle and looking through the albums. Wow, so many who shared the day are gone. Hoping for many more happy years together

Our wedding candle, a gift from relatives in Germany, faithfully lit fir 32 years

Anyone got recommendations for a quality 'mid-high range' recliner? I need something to relax/read/chill with cats in the den.

La-Z-Boy prices spook me BUT if they're worth it and last for decades (and hopefully aren't targets for the cats) it'd probably be worth it

Looking at stuff like this, probably the high end of my range https://www.la-z-boy.com/p/living-room-recliners-rocking-recliners/astor-rocking-recliner/_/R-010519

@SirTapTap I mistakenly thought spending more would equal better quality but I'm no longer a La-Z-Boy fan. We purchased a pair of leather recliners about 10 years ago. The first red flag was the store announcing closure between purchase & delivery. Thankfully no problems with delivery. They were comfortable for the first few years but I now find the lower back support to be nonexistent, the cushion constantly slides forward and the reclining mechanism is generally squeaky. Hope this helps.

"The pile beside my bed never shrinks; at the bottom of the stack are books I've been planning to crack open for months. My shelves remain full of lingering aspirations," writes the Walrus's Michelle Cyca. She looks at the problem of unread books, and the difficulty in offloading our libraries. What do you do with your unwanted books?

@CultureDesk @bookstodon I love books and literature but having to clean out the house of a deceased friend who kept every book (many unread), I now try to donate most of my books, only keeping the few that I absolutely love. Going forward, I make regular use of the library or use an E-reader. I don't want to burden whoever has to clean out my stuff when I'm gone.

Excited to have finished reading Crime and Punishment by . Was always intimidated by the sheer length but stuck with it and found it quite satisfying. E-Book version let me increase the font and read on my phone in the middle of the night. So much more worthwhile than mindless scrolling. Lots to digest and will revisit it again sometime in the future.

  • Sunny, chilly, very invigorating day.

  • Visited daughter and went out to a Belgian place for dinner. Gorged on oysters and a pot of mussels.

  • Enjoyed looking at the ocean and took a walk along the beach.

Speaking of the kid and definitions, I was trying to explain the uses of an emergency brake when I realized that I kept switching between calling it emergency and parking brake. Emergency brake brings up image of the lever between front seats in old Pinto, whereas parking brake recalls the self-latching/unlatching pedal version in newer cars.
He did know about drifting, and videos about that call it a handbrake.

ldamlanatra,
@ldamlanatra@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@jerzone I had a Pinto and that brake sure came in handy! Seriously, I refer to the lever between the front seats as the parking brake (especially since I drive a stick), it's a lot more widespread than the older pedal version which I associate with older cars, which usually had the gear shift on the steering column. Great memories.

  1. I felt achy and like I was coming down with something earlier but perked in the late afternoon and now feeling much better.

  2. Called adult son to wish him a happy birthday. Thankful that he’s getting settled and for the fine young man he’s become.

  3. Got dressed decently and had dinner out at a nice restaurant. We don’t get out in the evenings much lately , I miss it. We looked great (if I. must say so myself) and had a nice time.

Trying to sell my parent's house. One buyer backed out at the last minute. I got another offer, then an immediate request to drop the asking price by 20k. NOPE.

I've heard of rain dances. Are there special dances to get a damned house to sell??? grrrrrr

ldamlanatra,
@ldamlanatra@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@dancinyogi Try burying a St Joseph statue upside down in the garden . Should be able to find one in a thrift store. As someone who had to clean out and sell the homes of several relatives, don't be too eager and don't take the first offer. The right buyer will come. Good luck.

  2. Pulled back from potential depressive episode. Must disengage from news for self preservation.

  3. Managed to calm myself down after being cut off on the highway this afternoon with inches to spare. So easy for to escalate. Got to stay in control of my actions.

Happy to those who celebrate!

  2. My reactive, territorial & protective dog got along OK with visiting daughters puppy (with a little help from anti-anxiety meds). Major socialization progress! #DogsOfMastodon #GSD

  3. Didn't have any alcohol to drink today. In fact, I didn't drink much over the entire holiday weekend and got on just fine.

I live close to an international airport. Late in the day I can find myself looking at planes leaving, painted orange by sunset, and I’ll be dreaming of reaching for destinations far away, feeling trapped in my place. When I’m up there hurling towards some distant destination inside an aluminium tube, I look down at the ground, at almost ancient European cities, fantasizing about staying in one place, as I feel trapped where I am. Whatever you choose, you choose regret. Unless you choose pizza

ldamlanatra,
@ldamlanatra@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@kierkegaank I hear you. Making airport runs to JFK, I get terrible passing the signs detailing which carriers are at which terminal. Ever since my first international flight on Pan Am, the lure of an exotic destination is intoxicating.

Some short form themed that I enjoy. They read like a love letter to my favorite city.

  1. 'Gone to New Yor'k by - short essays about the NY of my younger years.
  2. 'Cocktails with Molotov' by - one time candidate for mayor and late night talk show host who I listened to in the 70s. He know how to tell a story
  3. 'The Bridge' & 'New York, A Serendipiters Journey' by part of his 'Fame and Obscurity' compilation. Magic

1 Safely returned home from a trip to visit family overseas. This might be the last time I’ll see my cousin and siblings as we’re all getting older, grateful to have the means and opportunity to spend time with them. Even ignored a few slights; empowering to just let some things go.

2 Wife and dog are happy to have me home (the feeling is mutual)

3 Spent a lazy, rainy afternoon doing not much of anything. Being productive can wait till next week.

last night I stepped outside for a minute then sat down because a haunting cello and violin piece was being played by people down the street and there's something magical about live music floating over to you on a night breeze so I stayed there becoming a little melancholy, probably one step away from imagining myself as the abandoned lover in a serious sexy french film when suddenly a bee all yellow fluff and orange pollen flew up my nose and this folks is how the universe keeps us humble

@ElleGray Wow, I want to move to your neighborhood if you can hear neighbors playing a cello / violin piece. You're very fortunate indeed.

  1. With the help of a historical society, found my mom’s High School yearbook picture. Wow, so pretty and so much promise before her future was sucked away. Crazy resemblance to when I was in HS.
  2. Encountered an annoying couple with their purebred on our walk this morning. So happy Lena was better behaved and sat quietly as they passed by on the trail.

  3. Took a cool shower and napped for a few minutes before getting lost in a book for the rest of the afternoon.
