If you sample N points uniformly on the unit sphere, take for each the halfway point to the north pole of the sphere, and then project is on the x-y plane, you obtain N points sampled uniformly on the unit disk.

(A request from @narain )

Black and white visualization on N points on a sphere moving smoothly to their halfway point to the north pole and then being projected on the x-y plane.

A few of us at @tudelft3d wrote a book about the computational aspects of terrain modelling 🏔️

We're been using it, and improving it with the help of the students, for a few years in the DTM course at TUDelft.

And we think it's ready to be used by others (BSc or MSc).

It's open-access and there are YouTube videos for many of the chapters: https://tudelft3d.github.io/terrainbook/

(the LaTeX source is on GitHub, PR for errors/typos are very much welcome!)

curious about something. wanna see how big the #GameDev community on mastodon is. are you a game developer? plz boost for reach

EDIT: i cannot prescribe that anyone is a gamedev or in what capacity. if you don't self identify as a gamedev, vote no, if you self identify as a professional gamedev even if you're doing it alongside a dayjob, pick the professional category. there are no wrong answers

Ah yes, the familiar hike up a steep path to reach - a water plateau ???

I've still not managed to integrate water streams naturally into the terrain, let alone have paths cross them without artifacts. Eventually I'll place planks and bridges over the water, but clearly the terrain needs more work before that's even possible.

A video hiking up a steep mountain path, eventually reaching a plateau with a shallow slow stream of water that has somehow not found its way to fall out over the steep cliff right next to it.
