@lordmatt@mastodon.social

A geeky #writer from Kent (#UK). I #blog lots. I develop with #PHP for the fun of it (and professionally). I also think I am funny - puns abound (you have been warned).

Please recommend interesting people for me to follow.

I love a nerdy chat and encountering new points of view.

I love all things #TimeTravel. I'm into #WordPress #DnD, #UKPolitics, #humour, #writing, #photography and... Ah, for the rest you must follow me.

Is there a way I can find out if mastodon.social shadow banned node.lordmatt.co.uk - I can't get it to verify nor does any post boosted on other instances show up for me.

Many non-artists don't seem to realise that just sitting staring into space is an integral part of the creative process.

@AndyPaciorekArt The same is true for coding too sometimes. We're doing work in our heads so chill all you manager and customer types.

@pwaring I'm currently making my way through This is How You Lose the Time War. I have mixed feelings about it so far.

@pfefferle can you point me at some resources that will let me work out why the first comment is given as the author in the JSON when I ping another site?

lordmatt,
@lordmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle I'm trying to get one of my sites to take a ping from another. It returns "not enough information". Using the debug tool, I can see that it gives this: "author":{"type":"card"} (unless there is a comment and then it finds the first comment as the author). I'm trying to work out where the JSON response is getting its info so I can supply a proper author card.

lordmatt,
@lordmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle Sure. The page I am trying to ping is: https://openmentions.com/topics/technology/ai/ you can see on the screenshot that the first commenter is being credited.

The source page (the one I am pinging from) is:https://matrixdreams.com/blog/random/asking-chatgpt-stupid-questions/i-asked-chatgpt-to-imagine-it-ruled-the-world-i-was-not-expecting-its-answer/

An example post without any comments: https://matrixdreams.com/blog/random/asking-chatgpt-stupid-questions/i-asked-chatgpt-if-socks-are-like-apples/

I'm happy to get down and dirty with some coding but I do not yet understand where the data is coming from and (thus) how to hook in and fix things.

lordmatt,
@lordmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle Just looking over my first message. God, I really failed to give any context at all. Thank you for being patient with me.

lordmatt,
@lordmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle It is so obvious now that it has been pointed out to me. Thank you for being willing to spend your free time helping me learn.

lordmatt,
@lordmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle I stumbled upon that. It showed me my JSON was not getting the author's info. That tool is a stroke of genius - it might not have gotten me to the end of the problem but it did get me in the ballpark. The getting lost part at the end was my fault from which you saved me.

downey, to webdev
@downey@floss.social avatar

Dear devs,

It's NEVER ok to lock people out of a webapp because their User-Agent doesn't match your predefined list. 😡

Especially webapps they need to manage their healthcare.

(I am in fact using one of the browsers on this list, your code just isn't able to tell.)

:boost_love: Please boost for basic education.

lordmatt,
@lordmatt@mastodon.social avatar

@downey We know enough to make a page work on all types of browsers, there is no excuse for devs doing that. They are doing it wrong.
