๐Ÿ†• blog! โ€œWhy did Usenet fail?โ€

This is annecdata - not a serious academic study. Adjust your expectations accordingly. When I first got online, the World Wide Web was still in its infancy - so CompuServe was my gateway to the Internet. I loved their well organised chat room. A couple of clicks and I could be discussing Babylon 5 with [โ€ฆ]

So the few times I've been to the US - once to California (which admittedly is different, on vacation rather than work), once to Corpus Christi, once to Arkansas (near Memphis) - I found myself boggling at how much open asphalt there was between stores.

I wondered if it was just because they had the space to expand, so they just did. It didn't occur to me that there were minimum parking rules. It was always very easy to park. Everywhere looked sort of empty/unpopular.

@tldr @sarajw a quick search shows thatโ€™s the Hilton Meadowlands which is in sight of the stadium. However walking directions say itโ€™s 36 minutes! Look at the route, bonkers

Classic piece of road repair; company repairs something (pipe?) in road and must restore road surface to spec; straight through a tiny part of a 'SLOW' sign with it's completely warn background.

@penguin42 my friend just shared this with me from their town. The repair crew did exactly what they were paid to do and nothing else!

If my wife wants to do something "computer-y" - pretty much anything - she'll reach for her phone.

If I want to do something "computer-y", I reach for my computer, for pretty much anything other than reading a short message or quick, casual browsing.

Yes, everyone is different, but I much prefer a larger screen and a physical keyboard for anything but the most trivial of tasks.

Are you a computer-first person, or a phone-first person?

luke,
@luke@social.sdfeu.org avatar

@neil for years and years I was a computer person but last year or so I've definitely become a phone person. That said there are certain tasks I prefer a computer for, especially checking maps, as prefer the larger screen.

@Tattooed_mummy @Oscii my brother and myself are the only people I know IRL that havenโ€™t had it.

luke,

@markusl @Tattooed_mummy @Oscii true and my brother fits that category. However several members of my household have had it several times and Iโ€™ve still not had symptoms or tested positive. Regularly commute unmasked to work, meet friends in pubs, go to football matches. Iโ€™ve just been very lucky (and am fully vaccinated).

Interesting cycle to work this morning: saw a BMW that blatantly had a fire in the engine with smoke billowing out everywhere and when someone waved to the driver to stop they shouted out the window they didn't far to go and it was OK. WTF?

I've never heard of dual-stack freight trains before!

No problem with electrified trains, you just need high clearance below the wires and a really tall pantograph.

Sweden runs double-decker passenger trains without any issues.

Blimey, it's all kicking off in my town!

On a slightly more serious note, it's interesting that even the print edition of the local paper is essentially using a clickbait headline, as you can't find out which main road is involved without buying (or at least opening) the paper.

In other news today, it seems like a super duper intelligence certified whistleblower is going to reveal the US Government has had UFOs in storage for DECADES!

The bombshell revelations will, of course, change everything we know about... well... everything.

Color me skeptical.

I have the feeling this is going to end in a massive informercial for the latest book by said whistleblower.
