What is teleology today?

I've tripped over references to "teleology" from a 1968 paper and I'm trying to wrap my head around it. It's described as controversial, to say the least (CW: "teleology as a lady without whom no biologist can live without but he is ashamed to be seen with her in public." 🙄). https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-88343-9_3

Teleological explanations are defined as, "the explanation of phenomena in terms of the purpose they serve rather than of the cause by which they arise."

Do brain researchers use it today? For instance, are normative models (like Bayesian models of decision making) teleological? There, researchers typically define the optimal solution for a problem and compare real behavior to it.

What about the neuroconnectionist program? There, researchers typically define a problem that needs to be solved (like labeling objects in images), train an ANN to perform it, and compare that ANN to the brain.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41583-023-00705-w

The few papers I've found that discuss teleology versus Normativity were impenetrable. Thanks in advance for pointers in the right direction!

lupposofi,

@NicoleCRust SEP seems to have two entries about teleology, one of teleological notions in biology, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/teleology-biology/, and the other one on teleological theories of mental content, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/content-teleological/. The latter one seems to have decent OIR's and RE's. But I guess you are acquainted with those entries already?

How do you stay connected with curiosity and awe?

I suspect most researchers experience ups and downs. I periodically find myself disconnected from curiosity and awe and I need to find that compass again. (Writing a book like I’m doing now is arguably an overindulgence there).

I worry that researchers are globally a bit disconnected from it, coming out of the pandemic coupled with increasing pressures to produce.

One impression I have is that the special swath of researchers who inhabit this furry elephant are particularly in touch with curiosity and awe.

How do y’all stay connected to it?

lupposofi,

@NicoleCRust An intriguing guestion! I'm way past my prime in research and teaching in universities, but I might still be able to connect to the almost visceral intellectual feeling, which sometimes is THE reward and meaning.

Understanding might be one philosophical path, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/understanding/, but today I saw here in Mastodon a link to an article which might sound some bell, or not, https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/01461672231191356.

I don't like posting to other social media services nowadays, solely because of the character limit. I hate limiting my words. 600 characters should not be not too long thing to post on social media.

lupposofi,

@rolle @anuko @saaste On the contrary, an urgent problem. 😉 We here at our instance have only 500 characters. Sometimes it really bothers, because it restricts the way you approach "thinking aloud". Partitioning a toot isn't a solution (for a s-l-o-w hunt-and-pecker). I don't fancy essays here and verbosity is a plague in online-communication, but sometimes, say, a thousand characters might be a treat. And of course I mostly only read (and learn) here.

I'm fairly confident that I won't be writing on panpsychism again any time soon... My interests switched to reevaluating physicalism again, especially in connection with cognitive science and empirically-informed approaches to consciousness in a broader sense. I don't have a strong opinion on which position is 'true' - and maybe that's bad for a philosopher - I just go by what I find worthy of further investigation 🤷🏻‍♂️

Maybe AI could help us to avoid excessive anthropomorphic bias in our attempts to learn what there is? After all, it just could be creative, couldn't it,

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/creativity/#CreaArtiInte

lupposofi,

@Babadofar @krishnadeltoso @philosophy @startupnews @cogsci A good question. And already the presupposition that animals "think" merits consideration. We humans may be so blinded by our language-centered existence that some new starts may be required. I'm ignorant of the feeding- or eating-habits of AI:s, but maybe some kind of extraction from available biological, physiological and behavioural data might be one step or check in the "translation" process?

Sometimes I am annoyed by a specific scientist not owning up to a mistake they made, and correcting themselves. Then I read Mahoney's conclusions in his review on the psychology of a scientist, and I am annoyed by all scientists. https://doi.org/10.1177/030631277900900304

Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance:

If everyone is tolerant of every idea, then intolerant ideas will emerge. Tolerant people will tolerate this intolerance, and the intolerant people will not tolerate the tolerant people. Eventually, the intolerant people will take over and create a society of intolerance. Therefore, Popper said, to maintain a society of tolerance, the tolerant must be intolerant of intolerance…

lupposofi,

@PhilosophicalPsychology @philosophy @phenomenology Spent an hour with that article, too. The promise is that "Affordance frameworks can help us add phenomenological nuance to [various unusual] reports", and maybe assist thinking, e.g., the built environment in a fresh and affectively more helpful way.

The question might be, do they really? The article contains mainly promises. A more general question remains about the specific surplus-value of the arduous affordance-theoretical framework.

@lisabortolotti @philosophy @philosophyofmind I find that a dangerous slippery slope, where truth is ultimately defined purely pragmatically. Näin vaihdat instanssista toiseen (mukaanlukien seuraajat ja seurattavat, ainoastaan postauksesi eivät siirry):

    1. Mene vanhan instanssisi asetuksiin kohtaan "Tuo ja vie" (englanninkielisessä "Import & Export" ja sen alta, "Vie tietoja" (englanninkielisessä "Data export"). Paina "Pyydä arkisto" (engl. "Request your archive") -nappia. Kun saat arkiston, pura se johonkin kansioon.

    2. Tee tili uudelle instanssille

    3. Uudella instanssilla: "Tili" (englanninkielisessä "Account"), rullaa alas: "Siirtyminen toiselta tililtä" (englanniksi: "Moving from another account")

    4. Syötä sinne vanhan instanssisi kokonainen tunnus esimerkiksi: @nimimerkki

    5. Mene vanhalle instanssille: "Tili" (englanninkielisessä "Account"), rullaa alas kohtaan "Muuta toiseen tiliin" (englanninkielisessä: "Moving to another account")

    6. Syötä sinne uuden instanssin kokonainen tunnus, esimerkiksi: @nimimerkki ja paina nappia.

    7. Mene uudelle instanssille kohtaan "Tuo ja vie" (englanninkielisessä "Import & Export") valitse sen alta "Tuo" (engl. "Import") ja valitse alaspudotusvalinnasta "Seurattujen lista" (englanniksi "Following list").

    Toivottavasti viihdyt uudella Mastodon-instanssilla!
