I want to talk about why I’m leaving #WanderingShop after more than six years on this instance. It’s because of a recent moderation decision that has led me to understand that the moderation team is unwilling and unable to protect Jewish users from antisemitism and harassment, and worse they seem unable to recognize really blatant and obvious antisemitic tropes and conflate them with “pro-Palestinian” sentiments which does a massive disservice to both Palestinian and Jewish people.
Hey I’m leaving wandering shop for catcatnya, I’ll be moving sometime in the next few days. Hopefully everything migrates ok, but keep an eye out for me just in case I lose anyone.
@kohelet@gavi that’s me. Judaism is a an ethnic religion, unlike a universal religion there are a lot more elements to it than the focus on deity. I’m Jewish by birth and culture and family, I strongly believe in Jewish values and history and I see the world through those lenses, but I don’t believe in a higher power. There’s a long, strong history of Jewish atheism
If you think a neutral term used by a marginalized group to describe the non-oppressed out group is the same thing as a slur, then yeah. Maybe you should in fact leave mastodon.
Hi all! My sister is interested in joining a German regional, primarily German language instance with good moderation and lots of local folks to ask questions and advice. She’s also interested in crafts (especially knitting), music, and language and linguistics in general. Anyone know where she should look? #InstanceRecommendations#Vorschläge
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Friday said he wants 3,000 condos and homes that are normally rented to Maui tourists converted to long-term housing for displaced wildfire survivors who are now living in hotels.
Green said he’s prepared to use the “hammer” of post-fire emergency orders to make sure owners of short-term vacation rentals extend them to long-term units if enough spaces aren’t converted voluntarily by mid-January.
This is interesting. Google has this #DesignPatent, D955,455, for a “Robot”. Have they announced anything pertaining to this yet? Is this the face of gemini?
I got it cleaned and not at the exact last minute either! I did it on Monday lol. 😅Here’s a before and during photo, my cats could not refrain from involving themselves in the most disruptive way
Heads up, the “antisemitism doesn’t just target Jews it’s everyone who’s semitic” is a nazi talking point and dogwhistle. Preventing Jews from discussing hate and discrimination that specifically targets us, or implying that such a thing doesn’t exist (lol I wish) is antisemitic. The phrase was specifically invented by folks who decided the previous term, “Jew hatred”, held them too accountable. It has always been a term for hatred of Jews.
Peaches, plums and nectarines distributed by HMC Farms and sold nationwide as recently as last week are being recalled due to an outbreak of listeria that has resulted in 11 illnesses, including one death and 10 hospitalizations, federal safety regulators said
Three teenagers, standing in the creek, their hands in the frigid November water. One of them, whispering reverently: “If we catch this thing we’re gonna be LEGENDARY.” #Overheard
I very strongly appreciate the surge of support in the face of rightwing antisemitism, I do, but I need folks to maintain that energy even when the Jews are pointing out antisemitism coming from the left.
“At least seven children across five states have suffered acute lead poisoning linked to at least three brands of apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches marketed to children and sold nationwide, the Food and Drug Administration announced in an updated safety alert Friday.”
I know it's tempting to use a popular hashtag to boost your platform for selling whatever it is you need to sell to make a living. Or just to make sure you're heard about whatever's on your mind.
But hashtags represent specific things, and people follow them because they want to see THAT thing. I insta-mute folks who misuse or attempt to monetize my favorite hashtags, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
I'm not sure hijacking a hashtag is going to get you what you want.
@mishellbaker oh it’s one of my fav mastodon features! Did I mute this person because they only annoyed me or were they being a troll? Now I don’t have to remember, the website does it for me 😅
You know the drill by now. I don't like talking about Black history. Americans know Black history. I want to talk about white American history. In other words, racism, and the erasure of both positive achievements of, and injustices suffered by, non-white people. That's what people don't know.
Try this: Ask your white US friends what the statue of liberty celebrates.
Now ask your Black friends. Or French folk of any color.
@mekkaokereke I went to school in northern Virginia, and it definitely depended on your teacher. I remember when my little brother came home from 4th grade saying it was “states’ rights” and being shocked, my 4th grade teacher was honest with us. And then in 7th grade my english and history teachers (who were awesome and who were definitely teaching off book) did a combined class one day where they had us read the full unexpurgated declarations for each state.
