Moved my personal website from to this weekend, and started with a great template/theme by @lukem.

  • Build time is down from approx 2 min to 5 seconds. - Full text should now be available in RSS (and kept the link the same!).
  • Repo is now hosted on instead of GitHub (I think this is site number 3 to transition)

Biggest desire is less dependencies to have to worry about. Having all posts in markdown did make the transition pretty painless.

I've had a few requests for different badges in the same style as my “Powered” and “Made by a Human” badges.

I’m thinking about taking these and a few more requests and selling them in packs containing 8 badges in 8 different colors in 88x31 PNG and SVG @ £2 (minimum donation)

If you have any requests for these badges, please let me know in the replies and I will add it to the list!

(No NSFW content please!)

8 “Made by a Human” badges in 88x31 (made, drawn, human content, written, no ai, not a robot, never by ai, organic)

@andycarolan http status codes could be super fun! Not sure if the size would work well for the purpose but just an idea! 404 missing, the teapot one could be really fun

I'm interested in getting some opinions.

When working on a software engineer team (of mixed skill levels), and you need to spin up a new service, which path do you think is best?

markpitblado,
@markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

@zstix how long is the project/app/service anticipated to last for? If the average tenure of staff is less than the anticipated length of the project then option 1 because their preferences may be different than the new devs coming in, if staff stay around for a long time, option 2

markpitblado,
@markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

@zstix this makes me think of all the projects that I have worked on where I look back at my past self and think "if only I knew then what I have now learned, I would have done xyz completely differently". Really good thought about not wanting to start off with tools that people are having to learn as they go as that risks permanent ineffeciencies or mistakes baked into the system at the start.

I think this has convinced me to lean towards option 2

I need to make a slide deck which means I am looking for an artist who can help me make some fun and interesting slides. Ability to create adorable raccoons in interesting situations a must. Paid. Not interested in AI generated "art".

I'm about to start using for the first time, to make the development of my new site a bit easier. Learning both and modern leads to a lot of manual rollbacks I hope will become easier.

I've read a lot about Git, but one question lingers still: I’m building my site based on Base Blog, in a repo I cloned using Desktop.

How do I disconnect (or whatever the technical term is) from the original Github repo and turns it into a private of my own?

markpitblado,
@markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

@anders my understanding is that you are looking to remove the remote, and instructions for that can be found here.

The best part of today was waking up and seeing that now has a material you compatible app icon on Android! It was the only app left, and now everything matches!

markpitblado,
@markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade interesting! I also have 4.0.7! Looking at the release notes, it does say that the monochrome icon arrived in this update (it shipped for me on March 27.

markpitblado,
@markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade that makes sense! I guess the good news is you have can have any icon you like, not just picking between the default and monochrome!

markpitblado,
@markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

@cory it is a way to verify an orcid id within your GitHub profile. This will place the orcid icon beside the link. Otherwise, anyone could put any orcid link in their bio and claim that it is them

Just got syncthing setup! Can write markdown on the go, have it sync to my notes repo, then just commit and push when I get home! If anyone is intimidated by syncthing, its really not as hard as it sounds from others describing it! Also tested it with and worked brilliantly.

I am nervous to state this out loud but I think I have an absolutely mint, zero-compromise neovim setup. It works on Mac and Windows. It's faster, easier to understand, and more capable.

Some bite-sized thoughts on the ecosystem and comparisons with VSCode:

  1. tree-sitter is amazing
  2. telescope + quickfix pane (ctrl+q) = bliss
  3. No magic. CLI first and you build in the conveniences you want; nothing more

Blog post otw. I started with NvChad. My overrides are here: https://github.com/jamwil/dotfiles/tree/main/dot_config/nvim/lua/custom

    @cliffwade @cliffwade my biggest regret with the switch was not setting up the custom domain right from the get go. Switching presents the perfect opportunity to do so, and I did it a year after the switch because I was worried it would be too complex. It's really straightforward! Same with the simplelogin integration, can also use your own domain for that!

    markpitblado,
    @markpitblado@fosstodon.org avatar

    @cliffwade @cliffwade technically no issues, it's just that you will have communicated the proton domains to a few people in that in between time! So I ended up with a few people that use the proton addresses and have to remember to use those when emailing them to not confuse them

    Reading Filterworld right now, and it caused me to reflect on the fact that I have never worried about likes or engagement on posts I make on mastodon. Due to the chronological nature, some things may just entirely miss peoples' feeds (or people may just read and keep scrolling), but that's okay! The point of the platform isn't to achieve fame, it's to communicate with others in a way that respects their time and preferences, to build a better experience for everyone.

    Fosstodon has been upgraded to version 4.2.8 of the Mastodon software. This is a nice release as it comes with a couple new features to help reduce spam in the Fed. They won't change how Fosstodon works, but their inclusion will mean we'll be seeing less unwelcome influx from outside of our instance, and that's a very good thing. Don't hesitate to read the release notes if you're interested. They're short.
