Yesterday a student came to me with project questions. She was trying to learn some ground-level tool basics (how useState works in React, but details don’t matter), and she was just hopelessly confused: the pieces were there, fragments of nascent understanding littered all around, but somehow it just wasn’t coming together for her.

She walked me through her fragments of non-working code, and as I was trying to figure out how she’d got so lost, she popped back to her documentation source:

Tux, one of the homeless waifs that have taken up residence in our garden. He's had a tough time, with a scratched up nose and a limp from an injured leg that had him hobbling on three legs for a month. We feared he was done for, honestly. After several months of Dan the Cat Whisperer working on him, he is content to stay this close when the back door is closed. Otherwise: not so much.

Day 10: hexagons

I've wanted to clean up my hyperbolic geometry code, so here are some hyperbolic hexagons. 6/4 tiling.

I like the colours on the left, but the spiderweb is pretty nice too

A 6/4 hyperbolic hexagonal tesselation of the Poincaré circle where 4 tiles meet at each corner. Since it is hyperbolic, the tiles shrink to nothing at the boundary. Each tile contains nested replicas of itself, shrinking to one corner. We only see the boundaries of the tiles and their echoes. The colouring and lighting effect make the boundaries look like glowing metallic wires. The overall impression is as a spiderweb.

Well, here's a new one: I get an email from my doctor's office lecturing me for being a no-show while I'm sitting in the waiting room waiting and waiting

Despite the fact that I checked in both with their automated system and at the front desk, 15 minutes before my appoinment

Software quality crisis, what software quality crisis?

I did eventually get seen (an hour late), but I imagine I'm going to go through billing hell to remove a ghost "no show" charge. Any bets?

Same basic procedure as with the glowing bubbles from yesterday, but instead of a noise-mutated circle I start with a smooth looping meander

And use the x coordinate of a random modulated torus knot to get the far edge

Fun with letterforms

The shapes of the letters are extracted from the font files to SVG files using ImageMagick convert -font which I then read parse into my internal data structures for manipulation.

I have quite a collection of interesting fonts at this point. Previous was Princess Sofia. Here we have L'Internationale, Roubaix, and Brassia

The word "Eclogue" repeated over and over along a winding looping path. The letters shrink as they proceed. The font consists of brick-like pieces stacked in the shapes of the letters. The ink is a deep maroon. A drop shadow accentuates the letters.
