Hey given the news from @universalhub about the explosion and fire, I'm wondering where most of the old DSLJ-type neighborhood discussions have moved. Anybody know?

mem_somerville,
@mem_somerville@mastodon.social avatar

@stripey @universalhub Although I dislike reddit for many reasons and tried to make alternatives work, nothing stuck. I find most of it is there.

Yes sometimes I do find some really amusing stuff there....

So for folks who do and historical crafts: if you were asked by a small museum for your "daily rate", what would be a good number?

I don't want to undercut craftspeople who do this for income. And I don't want to make it out of reach for a small museum.

This is in New England, US--near Boston.

Any ideas? Pointers?

If you want to improve your skills, the Invisible Starts and FInishes 1 class still has a little space for January. Martina Wolter-Kampmann's class on this page.

Disclosure: I'm a volunteer (unpaid) moderator for Lace Museum classes. That's how I know there's still a space left.

, I'm looking for newspapers from Key West, Florida from the year 1887. Can anyone give me a bead on what, if anything, exists?

mem_somerville,
@mem_somerville@mastodon.social avatar

@rjblaskiewicz I see a "Key West Citizen" at NewspaperArchive, but it's 1908-1993. Too late.

Newspapers.com has a smaller range for that.

Might have to broaden out to wider south Florida?

Santa Claws came early, with a new kitty hammock. It's the back door, and the only window that looks out over the back yard, and I couldn't figure out how to get a seat there for her. It's not a normal window with a sill.

But this one hooks with the straps and you can easily fold it down for using the door.

Happy to those who celebrate.

Happy Solstice! I am eager for more sun to return, because tomorrow is our . 8 years of our solar panels turning on.

I'm currently running a $300+ credit on my electric bill. I heat and cool with heat pumps. Attached is a current bill with my last years' usage layered on it.

The panels paid for themselves by 4.5 years, and we still get SREC additional payments for 2 more years now.

My current electric bill. Shows zero usage every month except January of last year, because I used a little bit of extra electricity then. Usually I'm using less than our panels produce and my bill is zero. Or--$10 delivery charge to Eversource, really. A red arrow highlights the 88 kWh use last January, all the other months show 0. I'm currently showing a $341.32 credit at the yellow arrow, so I'm probably good for this January too.

The eruption of a new volcano near Grindavík, has finally started.

Just to make this very clear: everyone, and most house pets, had been evacuated from Grindavík weeks ago. It is not clear how close to the actual town this is, but at least rest assured nobody is in danger.

OMG, you guys: remote-control fish is a hit in our house. Someone sent it around on one , and finally I snagged one.

It's cracking me up. Thanks to the original poster for the tip on this.

It is Potaroma floppy fish. Mine has the remote.

😸 🐟

A small calico runs from behind a cardboard box to pounce on the flopping fake fish in the middle of the living room. After one quick ninja hit, she walks off to the left. Then comes back for a second pounce but then dives and rolls away.

I'll tell you a timely story. I went with a friend on a tour of a while back.

In the graveyard, we were advised not to get too close to one of the graves. He said that people still pee on it. A lot.

It was one of the judges at the witch trials.

So I'm saying that I have evidence that some graves get peed on for hundreds of years.

And that is my thought and prayer for right now.

OMG, this article is 💯 on point. I can't find who sent it through my feed--but THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I bet I live in the neighborhood that had the most new public transit in Massachusetts in 30 years. And that was an excruciating and almost failed 30 years. And after that, tried to cancel our bus service.

Sierra Club tried to stop our Hydro lines; RFKJr tried to stop our windmills. It's all true.

Just the most destructive people, reflexively raging against anything coded “left” or “woke.” And so even the most universally beneficial trends and behavior are declared evil and “Un-American” 1/
