Does anyone know about any research into bad faith reporting, eg, people using reporting systems to try to harass someone? Or anything that's publicly written about how platforms deal with bad faith reports?

mem_somerville,
@mem_somerville@mastodon.social avatar

@axz Doctors have faced this with anti-vax trolls posting to their Yelp sites and things like that. I've seen media on it, but not formal studies.

I know of a crank author who silenced book reviews on Amazon, but me and the other reviewer got our reviews re-posted afterwards.

While anti-vax cranks constantly swarm Peter Hotez books.

It's a hot mess.

For those interested in , I have wrested control of the previously cancelled r/Lace subreddit and it's going to get better.

Open to adding some co-mods so it doesn't get lost again, too. If you are on reddit, come on by.

Is there a field of study dedicated to collective action problems and how to overcome them? Because it seems like every other field focused on the fate of our society comes up to these problems and is just like "well, fuck." Like, across domains, the word "doomer" is basically a short hand for "collective action problems, well, fuck."

mem_somerville,
@mem_somerville@mastodon.social avatar

@TeamMidwest @misc @skyfaller I totally agree that phrase "Wicked Problems" is what I understand when I hear it.

But locally to Boston, "wicked" had another goofy meaning entirely and it's hard to use it here!

I thought I knew labels--but today I found one I have never noticed before. USDA certified "bio-based".

Anyway, trying out these laundry detergent strips instead of buying my next massive plastic jug. Fingers crossed....

Anyone have good or bad experiences with these?

The Esplanade beer garden, this coming Sunday 5/14, at 5 pm. The first official ! (unless there’s another one I don’t know about, in which case I will edit this) RSVP at https://gath.io/1k98TsuZ5ruKkNPOvy91R, or follow @1k98TsuZ5ruKkNPOvy91R (the latter is wonky with mastodon.social but should work with most instances)

In the late 1800s, when steam ships were replacing sailing cargo ships, one of the last roles for the sailing ships was to carry coal around the world to supply ports where steamships wanted to go. A clean technology was essential to enable the growth of a dirty technology. And even today, fossil fuels aren’t magically just everywhere. A gigantic *** 40% *** of global shipping is just moving fossil fuels. So eliminating fossil fuel also drastically cuts global shipping emissions.

@helenczerski One of the incredibly galling things around New England recently was our attempt to get hydro from Canada.

But you know who worked against that? Sierra Club and other "environmentalists".

A lawsuit was won recently, though, that means it might happen still. In a decade probably.

@stevesilberman I really think they were counting on women being too embarrassed to talk about pregnancies that do not succeed, or assaults, but that was a different day.

Sadly, these stories will be endless now, and some incredibly tragic.

But everyone is going to know the horror this time.

Hey, in the early days of Twitter we had "tweetups" where enthusiasts with nothing else in common but their geography would just ... meet up somewhere. (I actually have been reunited here with several old friends I met in those days)

Covid complicates it somewhat but I think it might be just about time to try something like that for Mastodon. We have enough people - but not quite too many - for it to make sense. I'd be down to try!

mem_somerville,
