Rociada, west of Las Vegas, is a fusion of two villages, Upper and Lower Rociada. Other nearby communities, like Pendaries and Gascon, though technically in Mora County, also use the Rociada postal address.

El Malpais National Monument | The jagged, desolate landscape is a volcanologistโ€™s playground. A million years of volcanic activity sculpted the landscape. Numerous volcanoes and lava flows generated the field. The most recent volcanic activity was about 800 years ago.

at White Sands. Normally, it is a challenge to get to the dunes before the sun rises, because the gate opens after sunrise. However, they open the gate PRIOR to sunrise during the White Sands Balloon Invitational in early September.

Last week was a whirlwind of wandering in southern New Mexico, from Silver City to Alamogordo. The weather was very cooperative, with relatively low wind until the day I drove home. The snap happy week continued at Gathering of Nations of Friday.

The trading posts in are impressive. With Zuni Pueblo, the Navajo Nation, and Hopi in close proximity, the density of artistic talent in the immediate area is impressive.

Pecos Pueblo's recorded history began around 800 AD when early inhabitants of the Rio Grande Valley moved into the upper Pecos Valley. They established 14 small hamlets by 1100 AD, extending 40 miles down the river. Something happened in the 14th century to compel the villages to consolidate at Pecos Pueblo, dramatically increasing the population. Pecos Pueblo became a frontier trading hub and fortress by 1450, home to more than 2000 people.

Located in a collapsed lava tube, Bandera's ice cave never rises above 31ยบ Fahrenheit. You feel the temperature change dramatically as you descend the stairs. The igneous (volcanic) stone insulates like the ultimate Yeti cooler. The ice has been accumulating for more than 3,400 years (based on core samples tested). It is more than 20-feet deep and regenerates as new rain and snow melt seep into the cave.
