@histodons @israel @palestine For Israelis to learn Arabic is not a political statement, it's about reclaiming our identities. Half of us grew up in homes in which some dialect of Arabic or Farsi were spoken. So ignoring Haaretz's uncontrollable urge to orientalize everything not grounded in (how ironic), Maktoob (מַכְּתוּבּ, مكتوب), co-founded by prof. Yehuda Shaharabani-Shenhav, is one of the most inspiring projects in the academia these days. It's always a pleasure to learn more about the system they've developed to translate from literary works from to , in teams of two native speakers https://www.haaretz.com/life/books/2023-07-05/ty-article-magazine/.premium/the-most-political-act-for-jews-in-israel-is-to-learn-arabic/00000189-24e8-df82-a78f-65fa843b0000

@tzafrir @histodons @israel @palestine since I speak both I can tell you am aware of the fact that Farsi is not Arabic. Also, this is not what the text is saying. Maybe read again.

@louis it is really a parallel of the world. If you lie all the time about everything, the truth doesn't matter anymore.

Threads launched and the demise for the Fediverse has yet to come. They don't even federate.

I assume that a new "threat" against the Fediverse (and a new reason for instance admins to block each other) will emerge very soon.

@louis Isn't it enough for corporation to the take over drafting and future development of (W3c protocol), the same way DRM extensions were drafter into HTML5 video playback, to kill it as an open protocol? Adding ad suuport etc.

also, if you used to use Linux on your personal computer but don't anymore, what made you switch away from it?

for me: I'm on a break from Linux right now because I was having some extremely annoying power management issues I couldn't figure out (it kept running out of battery while asleep), and there was some Mac/Windows-only software I wanted to use

oatmeal,
@oatmeal@emacs.ch avatar

@b0rk fedora on slimbook one. No power issues, no usability issues, no major issues at all, to be honest. No need to bend Linux to work on hostile hardware, ie nvidia, the same way you’re not going to insist installing macOS on none Apple hardware, or windows on macs. It can work, but it’s not ideal. Software availability, security and privacy are main issues for me.

'The Most Political Act for Jews in Israel Is to Learn Arabic' - “ there is ample need for our project, with less than 0.4 percent of Israel’s Jewish population capable of reading a literary text in Arabic” @israel @palestine

@sane_guy @Sherifazuhur @israel @palestine there are couple of initiatives to teach Israeli jews Palestinian Arabic https://madrasafree.com/about-en The sad thing is many of us grew up in homes (grandparents mostly) where some dialect of Arabic was spoken. The Israeli indoctrination machine though forced us to reject our own heritage. Some of the most important jurisprudence and philosophical works in Judaism are written in Judeo-Arabic

@histodons @israel (the late) Michael Brooks: "So it's not a complex issue. That's the big thing. It's super simple. There's one group that has enormous power. It's the most powerful country in the Middle East. It's backed by the United States. It acts on another population of people with total impunity, and is never held accountable for anything. So there's no symmetry in the relationship. It's a pure asymmetry relationship. And the question is rights or not. So that's it. It's not complicated."

I installed #emacs package with #guix on my debian machine, and after that, two icons were added to my menu: emacs and emacs(client). Can anyone tell me which one I should use?

oatmeal,
@oatmeal@emacs.ch avatar

@moheb2000 for normal use, like any app, simply run the first. No need to worry about the client now until you've become more familiar with Emacs.

You might want to start with the built-in tutorial by typing M-x and then at the prompt help-with-tutorial and Enter. M-x stands for Alt+x together.

Otherwise, look online for tutorials, or ask around @emacs.ch mastodon instance.

really like the second feature offered, which is the ability to drag the buffer name from the bufferbin sidebar to the desired window. Imagine having multiple window split and just dragging a buffer into one of them. If there’s a time to use a mouse with emacs, that might be it 🫢 https://github.com/blueridge-data/bufferbin

    @yeti we’re so far a way from that vision it’s really sad. Our world is ever shrinking in that respect. Trademarking apples though, I thought you were joking. At least they’re not weaponizing WIPO to blackmail developing countries this time (like the USA was doing for a long time). It’s nasty.

    @tzafrir @histodons @israel @palestine that’s for sure that’s why the heading says “some”. Specifically though calling for its abolition is something relatively new since Israel used to tolerate UNRWA so it wouldn’t need to take care of the refugees as it would have had to according to international treaties. Same goes for the PLO for example, with whom UNRWA was in some ways overlapping.

    is anyone able to sync O365 mail using ? I don't have a choice (for school) and need to get this working.

    So far the only platform I'm able to login and sync is iOS (added an account as Microsoft Exchange). evolution-ews, mbsync, geary etc. all fail authentication.

    Trying to get mu4e like I did for iCloud
    Followed the linked guide. So I know it's possible. Could it be that today I need to set up OAUTH to get this working. The guide is from 2019.

    "The Maknuune Lexicon" is a Palestinian Arabic lexicon which is updated regularly and available to download as PDF, and raw TSV. Also, it is built with #LaTeX (could easily tell by the underlined hyperrf toc links 🤓 It is part of an encyclopedic project Palestinian Arabic dialect by NYU University in Abu Dhabi.
