(I was going to attach a screenshot showing one of the problems, but I can't, because it appears Wayland has broken image copy-paste.)

The trunk or treat at my daughters' high school was a lot of fun. We got a lot of compliments on our costumes and our decorations. The kids had a great time and it was a great event for the community.

In 2020, a contingent of Trump supporters used trucks and vehicles to form a "Trump Train", which harassed and endangered a Joe Biden campaign bus driving through Central Texas.

Fearing for safety, the bus operator requested police support. Except once it entered San Marcos (just south of Austin), the local cops refused to intervene.

Several travelers on the bus sued, claiming the city violated the Klan Act of 1871.

San Marcos just settled.

@conansysadmin Akonadi is a disaster. And when things go wrong -- and they sometimes do -- it is impossible to debug. I'm a committed KDE user, but won't touch akonadi.

I have a rule: when interviewing for a job I won't do a "take home" test until I've had a chance to talk with the hiring manager or somebody in that chain.

I had an opportunity to exercise that rule today.

@WagesOf I'm willing to do it ... I just need to know that there is serious mutual interest on both our parts.

(Not 30 hours, mind you, but I'd be willing to spend an evening on it.)

Scene: Home Depot parking lot. I'm walking in to get stuff. A couple is walking out, pushing a shopping cart through the parking lot. Two life-sized skeletons in the cart.

Me, without breaking stride: "Cute kids!"

Woman: "They're our best."

End scene.

For those of you that have Phillips Hue gear:

http://rachelbythebay.com/w/2023/09/26/hue/

That includes a potential alternative for continued use of the existing gear, without migrating to the Phillips cloud.

Between what Phillips is seemingly doing, and with reported breaches at Johnson Controls and elsewhere, having essential systems operating mostly- or entirely-locally seems wise.

Though local environmental, monitoring, and security gear can be breached, too.

I’d write that about hosting critical IT apps locally too, though a major breach at any large vendor (AWS, or Azure, or Apple, or GCP, or ilk) would still have knock-off IT effects ~everywhere.

@HoffmanLabs I hope the bulbs in my setup continue functioning. But if not, yeah, I'm not going to do a cloud registration. I'll rip out the bulbs (and hub) and replace them with open components.

@transitory @HoffmanLabs I currently use a Hue hub. I'm mostly Z-Wave, but prefer Zigbee for a couple of desktop lamps.

@transitory @HoffmanLabs My likely move (if I have to move) would be either: 1) switch to Ikea, the community seems to like those, or 2) check out this Thread thingy.

Was talking with a friend about the harms of short term rentals.

The fact that New York City has greatly restricted STRs so they don't adversely impact housing stock, but the most meager regulations in have been thrown out in court is so peak

True story: Decades ago, there was a Mexican restaurant about a mile from my house, in what is now the Village Shopping Center on Anderson Ln,

This unknown singer-songwriter was hanging out, enjoying himself, maybe a little too much.

Later that day, he pulled out his guitar and wrote a quick song: Wasting Away Again in Austin, Texasville.

I'm so not a parrothead, but it's interesting that all started from such humble beginnings, right down the street.

I created the Brigade in . As I reconnect to the community, it greatly saddens me to see what has become of CfA.

It's not completely unexpected: ten years ago civic tech was groundbreaking and fundable. That all disappeared along with the Obama presidency.

Still, it's sad to see CfA transition from a community-focused organization to a union busting consultancy.

Over the past couple years, automobile styling has been to emphasize the front grill to ridiculous proportions.

They've been getting bigger and uglier. They look like angry, aggressive Transformer robots.

At the same time, EVs are coming more widely available, and those grills disappear since they aren't needed. EV style screams sleek and modern.

I've always thought the angry grill look would date fast. EVs will accelerate that.
