I'm so fucking mad about the #uvalde settlement.

It's not that the number is low --what number would be high enough?

It's that it's insulting.

And the 400 cowards with their guns let those children and parents be terrorized.

We’re going to find out if white women value contraception in November.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@nosmaharba @StillIRise1963 sure that's part of it. But it has to be understood that some people just prefer it. Period. Phyllis Schlafly is a great example. Did she represent all women? No. Most women? Probably not. But was she also arguably the most important person in the anti-ERA movement? Yes.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 the hard truth is that trusting white people, including white women, to collectively choose the logical best thing even for themselves over racism and white male supremacy is a perilous venture.

*I know she knows this better than me. I also know the "but not every white person" crowd can **** all the way off. I am white and I said what I said.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 yup. This has always been the case. Obviously, there are exceptions, even notable and important ones. But the reality is the horrifying racist and sexist hierarchy that was particularly strong in the 19th century South (but existed in all US territory) was enabled by white women who not only accepted it but fought to maintain it.

It couldn't have happened without those women. This doesn't mean the men aren't guilty AF, they are. But they couldn't do it without help.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act at work. In addition to clean energy solutions being good for the planet, low-income and minority communities typically bear the brunt of everyone else’s pollution and also rely on public transportation the most.

#ThanksBiden

A fleet of 60 new electric buses will soon traverse across Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn along routes in low-income and minority communities, MTA officials said Tuesday (May 14th):
https://gothamist.com/news/mta-rolls-out-new-electric-bus-fleet-for-queens-staten-island-brooklyn

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@TonyStark the moment they revive the company town model still used in other countries they'll try to dump public transportation altogether.

There's a great argument that capitalists hate capitalism and are trying to return to fuedalism. I agree with the argument until the end.

They're not trying to return to feudalism. They're trying to return to corpratism, where corporations control the economy and fascists ensure they'll never have competition.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@graydon @TonyStark yes, that's corpratism. It's the fascist economic model. It's why "capitalists" who didn't necessarily like fascism, partnered with it.

And to be fair, they were facing a huge threat from labor. Their greatest fears were labor getting so strong it turned the economies of these countries into communist systems.

It's inherently anti labor.

Congressional Democrats -- particularly senators -- are pathetic.

That's the only word for their beyond-weak non-response to the news that Alito -- the enormously powerful Supreme Court justice -- was a backer of the Jan. 6 insurrection. (His obvious lie, blaming his wife, is also the definition of pathetic, but in a different way.)

The Democrats, in their typical weak-kneed manner, are going to let it all go.

They make me sick.

Read this from Josh Marshall:

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@dangillmor yeah, I'm all about abolishing things I guess because the Senate shouldn't exist.

Constitutionally, it's supposedly not possible to amend it out. But it says nothing about amending what it does. I say roll it into the House and slide it's responsibilities to committees held only by "Senators" who'd still be elected statewide. Now, Wyoming would have three statewide members at that point but only two could say, confirm judges maybe.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@nicholas_saunders @Vonskinnback @rameshgupta @benroyce it was the Blackshirts in Italy first leading to Mussolini's rise in 1922. Hitler, Franco, Tojo, Pétain, and others by 1944.

And of course Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, Father Coughlin and others wanted to do it in the United States and had plenty of help from the resurgent KKK.

I'm not sure what Orwell has to do with it.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Vonskinnback @nicholas_saunders @rameshgupta @benroyce but the common denominator is people not voting.

Hitler's party never got more than 38% of the vote. His opponents were too busy squabbling and people too frustrated with all of the bickering.

Fascists almost always if not always take power by dividing their opposition and getting people who'd vote against them to note vote.

Often by the boot to the face. Literally.

But some go winningly thanks to propaganda.

In 2022 SCOTUS ruled 6-3 that public school teachers & other staff can lead students in prayer.

Now Louisiana will require all schools that receive public funding to display the Ten Commandments, including colleges and universities.

If it’s prayer these guys want, if you’re a public school teacher who wants to learn the Islamic call to prayer, i.e. the Adhaan, to teach your students, let me know.🙃

@QasimRashid my dad is very sick. Probably not going to make it. People whose lives he's touched have prayed in protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim faith traditions and I believe the person who prayed for him yesterday (a long time friend) prayed a Hindu prayer over him.

We welcome them all. Not because we're desperate but because we welcome prayers offered in love.

I'm pretty Louisiana is a year away from banning all but one. It's disturbing and wrong.

Each non nazi white person needs to convert 5 white nazis.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 that's a tall order. Fascists by definition reject rationality as a decision making mechanism and replace it with emotionality. Emotions drive them. They use rational thinking to justify their emotions and to justify their vile actions.

And violence. They worship violence.

I'm not sure how to convert them.

In my mind, and maybe I'm wrong here, the best bet is getting the "both sides are the same" types to recognize they're not the same and fascism is an existential threat.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 but what to do about my fellow white people I'm not sure. My parents and in-laws are anti Trump, thank God, but most if not all of my extended family are either MAGA or MAGA tolerating.

I haven't spoken to any of them in four years.

But, if my dad passes this week I'm planning on using that platform to try.

His is a legacy of love and sacrifice for the well being of all others, the antithesis of fascism.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 yup. I'm trying to figure it out. You're right, no matter how many poc vote for fascsim the reality is if the majority of white people voted against fascism the GOP as we know it wouldn't exist.

This is on white people. Period.

And white people not only vote fascist too often they either actively suppress poc from voting or make excuses for that suppression, gas lighting people into thinking something other than suppression is going on.

philip_cardella, to random

Things people say when they don't understand what fascism is. And this one I believe is actually honestly against fascism. They just don't know anything they didn't "learn" on social media or YouTube.

These people are the same ones that allowed the Brown Shirts and the Nazis to win in 1922 and 1932.

I cannot emphasize this enough.
