@Darbraun @lednabwm I swear I don't want to argue and I think we can all find common ground here but you literally labeled a group of people fascists. We should indeed be careful on how and when we apply labels but there is a time and a place where we should in fact use them. As you just did. If there's a bone to pick I think it's the opposite problem, it's not just religion that has anti human Rights tendencies, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China were/are openly atheist.

I sometimes forget that the far right is an anti enlightenment movement.

Perhaps it's my decades of being submerged in the ivory tower of the university or maybe it's just a love of logic and enlightenment principals. I don't know.

But I'm realizing what I find persuasive--evidence that's based on reason--not only fails to persuade the anti-enlightenment crowd, but actually incenses them. They hate reason the way vampires hate sunlight.

I'm trying to convince him Haley will gleefully implement (which he's never heard of--if I told you his job title you'd shit, he's swinging a big stick) but he's a prime example of why she's so dangerous.

and , it doesn't matter that would be worse for the housing crisis. People who have lost or are desperate to not lose the roof over their head aren't thinking about national politics much.

Okay I think today I'm going to write a piece about how the mayor of Miami running for president isn't what you think it is in no small part because he's not really the mayor of Miami. Technically, yes he is the mayor of a city named Miami, but that city is not what you think it is and not what his national backers want you to think it is.

You see, Miami Dade County has a mayor. And that mayor is called the Big Mayor here because all the other cities in the county, 34 of them, are small fries.

I'll admit the poorly written Wikipedia page on the economics of fascism can be read to yes there's some big debate about the role of capitalism in fascism. There really isn't a debate there's a debate about the nature of the relationship. That's even in the Wikipedia article of you don't just skim.

People who study know fascism is derived from liberal democracy, that is a legally (though often not practically) free society with rule of law and a free market.

Things people say when they don't understand what fascism is. And this one I believe is actually honestly against fascism. They just don't know anything they didn't "learn" on social media or YouTube.

These people are the same ones that allowed the Brown Shirts and the Nazis to win in 1922 and 1932.

I cannot emphasize this enough.

Ok my kid is trying to develop a study for AP research on political bias. She needs to find examples of myths liberals buy.

Yes, I know that the very nature of being liberal makes it a little harder to get duped (I don't think it's because we're smarter per se, I think it's because we don't care if our "team" is wrong).

@fulanigirl I'm white so I'm not going to jump on your recent thread. It's a great and important thread so I boosted it.

You're touching on something very important and urgent. Housing is a at one of the highest crisis levels in American history. This hurts real people.

I hope what I say next is taken as complimentary to your posts: stable housing and food needs is both necessary to political stability AND lack of those things were the conditions Mussolini and Hitler rose to power on.

Y'all understand the lawyers pick the jury, right? It's going to start with a cross section of citizens in South Florida (MDC, Brow, PBC) and in DC, but the lawyers are going to do everything they can to find juries they like or at least can live with.

voted overwhelmingly for but because that number was smaller than what voted for Hillary people think it's country but it is not. Biden received 58% of the vote in South Florida. A 16 point victory.

I'm increasingly convinced the thing we should all be mad at and hate and want destroyed are corporations, not

Corporations are stealing your wages, not the boss/owner sweating next to his employees in the kitchen or in the field.

Corporations are the things buying politicians and judges and creating billionaires who take Clarence and Sam on $100,000 fishing trips, not the boss/owner who wishes you had universal healthcare so s/he didn't have to think about it.

Some of my favorite movies are Christopher Nolan movies. However the treatment of women in oppenheimer, which I've only read about because I haven't had a chance to see it yet, or should I say the exclusion of the many women who participated in that project, makes me reflect on his entire resume. Does this man really just not put women in his movies except for sex objects? Or secondary characters?

I'm in a huge line in where the county is trying to pass the first ever heat ordinance for workers. Over 30 people die a year in this county alone from heat related crises at work.

And yet workers are NOT entitled to water.

Read that again.

The heat index here can go over 105° and workers aren't entitled to water or breaks in the shade. And NO PLACE in the US has any laws to protect workers from heat.

We're trying to change that.

Get out and today get involved tomorrow.

Yeah. Kolektiva is an anarchist thing, I guess. While I recognize there are a few anarchists who don't realize anarchism is literally the most extreme form of libertarianism and libertarianism is the most extreme form of public self gratification I'm pretty good if I never have to talk to another self proclaimed anarchist.

I mean, I don't care if you're for or against any particular system. I do care if your solution is mansplaining why all systems are bad.

philip_cardella, to Polls
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

Here's a reason #polls are so dangerous:

Thousands of people voted for Nader in 2000 as a protest vote because "Gore is going to win my state anyway" or "my vote doesn't matter" or "the two parties are the same."

Millions of people voted for #Brexit as a "protest vote" because Brexit wasn't going to win anyway.

James Comey knew that #Hillary was going to win given the polls and so his email story wasn't going to matter anyway.

Stop thinking your protest vote won't matter. Damnit. #USPoll

There are individuals who buck that trend but in general. We agree, right?

And we know, don't we, that there are many in the GOP, especially the old guard, who don't mind the fascism but, like any good fascist, would be happy to stick a knife in 's back if it did l suited them. Right?

Can I just say how awful a platform is for groups? (I'm talking organizations, volunteers etc not necessarily friends)

The constant stream of noise obscures any important information that might be in it.

As ONE way of communicating maybe, I guess. But as THE platform? Foh.

An announcement I'm not looking for but might need gets buried in twenty responses before I see it and makes it hard to follow.

Yes, I know there's a way to clarify but my groups rarely do.
