24601: can't speak french™, so i let the funky music do the talking. j'aime : la musique pop, les transports en commun. not so much : réchauffement, haters.

avis femelles, mais sur l'internet le genre a peu importe. ne décroche que pour emma et paloma.

** IT’S HERE! FRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC THREAD ON **

Tonight’s theme is:

🎬🎞️📽️ STAR OF STAGE AND SCREEN! 📽️🎞️🎬

🎵 Post music made for—or featured in—movies...along with what you’re drinking. 🎶

Bonus points if someone who made the film helped make the song!

🍷 Charlie Chaplin ‘The Kid’ + Sidecar🍸

Post often • share • make some friends

Video of an older Charlie Chaplin conducting an orchestra. I believe his fly is zipped, his shoes are not tied together and he's not doing that pancake bit Yes he composed this and many others.

@flexghost
nat king cole, l-o-v-e, used in the 1998 version of parent trap (you know, the one introducing lindsay lohan)

the song is used in nearly its entirety over the opening credits and establishing scenes, with just one cut in the middle and very minimal overlaid dialogue. three solid minutes of nat.

Bookshop West Portal just sent out an email asking people to tell SFMTA not to make any changes to the streets at West Portal Station because it would ruin their business so I guess I’m never buying anything there ever again. I can’t believe 4 people JUST died there and they actually typed up an email that said this and hit “send”: “we believe limited SFMTA resources should be directed toward the already-identified high accident sites in the city. West Portal is not one of them.” They also take a potshot at the Valencia bike lane using disproven stats, and try to use the elderly and disabled as a cudgel against traffic safety improvements.

Also, they keep talking about the tragedy of a handful of parking spaces going away, when they’re along multiple transit lines. I have only ever arrived at their bookshop via transit. Do they actually have any stats showing that only people who drive buy books there? Or is it that entitled drivers are more likely to make conversation about parking (or lack thereof)?

@bluestocking @eniatitova @sf_ish some day i'll bore you all with what happened when my hoa implored me to come to the planning commission with them to talk about parking…

"As a leading craft beer gastropub, a third of our sales might come from delivery... the entire experience of The Monk’s Kettle has now been transformed from a welcoming place where you hang out with friends in a fun atmosphere…to eating a lukewarm burger and fries in your apartment."

a sad statement on what's happened to community, culture and public space in San Francisco.

@scott i think people as a culture have given up on interacting in public. people decided they just didn't want to leave the house and didn't want to be told to. some over covid concerns, some just got used to no-pants workplaces. small business is killed by less foot traffic and no real rent accommodations (i hate saying 'small business' as it's an air-quote moderate dog whistle, but here i believe it to be true). from a zoning and planning perspective, we built this city for a certain density and traffic pattern, foot and car. when the foot traffic dies out, your built environment doesn't match usage. so people fill that space in ways other people don't like and they bring cops and they bring dogs ‘planters’ &c

This man needs a therapist. It’s, on one level, kind of funny to see such an absurd reaction to a bike lane, but I don’t feel great pointing and laughing; he really seems not well. https://missionlocal.org/2024/04/yasmins-owner-pledges-30-day-hunger-strike-over-valencia-bike-lane/

where'd my go? i know i had one pinned… whatever. i boost things, , , if they're outrageous enough (they're a dime a dozen here, gotta be selective). i'm highly political and try to keep it off masto (including filtering hot-button topics from my own feed). i buy local and post my haul. i live in an english-speaking country but occasionally break out jacques clouseau to torture people. my shift key hasn't worked since about 2006. and i only in posts.

pootriarch, to random

i wrote this about my reading habits a decade ago but it's still basically true

If I feel disappointed or tricked by the author — i.e., I invested a lot of time in the book, I expected to be interested, but it became useless — it will get one or two stars. If I didn’t read enough of the book to make a fair assessment, or if I disliked it but knew going in that I wasn’t the target audience, I drop it off my queue without rating. If I am experimenting with something I don’t typically like, but that came highly recommended, I will defer even adding it until I’m sure I will like it well enough to rate it.

If the book is controversial (religious, political, etc.) I will rarely write a text review. I typically will throw it back without rating even though I finished it and have an opinion. This is a defense mechanism that is based on the universe of the book’s readers, not about the book itself.

I was having an ok day, until someone said I was being annoying. :sadness:

Feel free to mute me, unfollow, or block me if the way I conduct myself on here is not to your taste. I welcome gentle correction if I'm behaving in a way that's hurtful or inconsiderate, but I don't tolerate rudeness or requests that I alter my behavior just because someone doesn't like how often they see my posts. There are plenty of people who are annoying and you can just...ignore them.

pootriarch,

@KydiaMusic UR SO ANNOYING OMG
has bequeathed us the mute button. it is not your fault if someone else can't sort out its usage. i am majorly bugged by all manner of things and john sends them to file 13 for me. there are hundreds of people who are known to piss me off, so muted, and legions who i don't know about yet.

unless it's personal, in which case i block or report. and that was personal. just saying.

Just got the call from State Farm that this is the last renewal of our home insurance. We have a year (which was either nice of them or regulated, not sure which) to find an alternative. I’m thinking that maybe we should require Exxon and PGE to buy us all home insurance as part of a climate change adaptation.

So how do you ask your doctor "can you please look into diagnosis x" without putting it like that?

Doctors don't like it when patients think or read about stuff, but also this stuff is really worrying me.

@amberage once the flood of direct-to-consumer adverts came — 'ask your doctor if this $1m drug is right for you' — i can imagine doors shutting in their minds. while it's maddening to those of us who are intelligent and can sift real information from ai slop and late-night infomercials, i cannot say i'd end up less contemptuous than them
