tomjwatson, to books
@tomjwatson@fosstodon.org avatar

Is Wheel of Time worth the 14+ book commitment?

I'm a big fan of other fantasy authors like Tolkien, Phillip Pullman and Brandon Sanderson, though I've bounced off of a few other authors like N. K. Jemison, Pierce Brown, Scott Lynch.

Thoughts?

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@tomjwatson Sounds like it'll be up your street. The later books can be challenging as they drag on in places, but the series really pays off. If you enjoy the first book then you'll likely love the series.

Me favorite question of the morning so far:

Coworker: This automation is supposed to run every Monday. Why did it run today and not yesterday?

Me: Today is Monday.

proactiveservices,

@mike "This is meant to run every fourth Sunday, why didn't it run yesterday?"

"Because yesterday was the fifth Sunday of the month."

@RL_Dane I think the current Mastodon Web UI makes it easy to miss a thread (especially when properly-formatted), so don't mind the thread one too much :-)

Mastodon's a microblogging platform, 500 characters is already a bit much IYAM. A better platform would be one for long-form posts like write.as.

    @travisfw The BBC podcast "Sliced Bread" (which asks "is product X or service Y the best thing since sliced bread?") did an episode on this recently - and concluded that in many cases, dishwashers are more efficient.

    Lost my bike key, so I pushed my bike home for 20 min with the back wheel lifted like a . No one cares, it's surprisingly not that noticable. 5 min metal sawing and the lock is gone. Thought about but my key is gone anyways.

    @proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

    @data_from_space I once had to wheel my bike three kilometres with the front wheel lashed to the rear rack, after the skewer sheared off. Bicycles are not comfortable when used in this configuration!

    To whoever needs to hear this:

    Your blog is better without an image than with an AI-generated one. I came here to read your words — let them stand for themselves!

    If you must use an image, and some soulless AI mockery would suffice, do this instead:

    Step outside, and take a photo of wherever you are.

    Include a lot of sky, if you can.

    This implicit "here's where I am" is a better reflection of your work than whatever midjourney or stable diffusion would splort out.

    We need more people with bad internet. Im talking bird shit on the satellite dish type networking. We dialing in on a chewed up phone line. Call it espionage the way im dropping these packets. Baud rate tied to my hearts BPM. Im starting a small business on McDonalds Free Wi-Fi. I dont send JSON, I give my buddy Jason a call and he gets it where its going. Im moving different. Lag so bad the opps think Im teleporting. My downloads arrive on a UPS delivery schedule. Got a router running off three triple-A batteries. We rigged up wifi with walkie talkies.

    Idle thought: growing up in the 80s/90s, I remember muffler shops everywhere. And there were ads all over TV/newspaper/yellow pages for them.

    I have never had a muffler fail, ever. That includes two <2000 cars (1986 Chevrolet Caprice wagon, 1993 Plymouth Duster), but I didn't have either very long. Were mufflers just a consumable back then? Was there some breakthrough in muffler reliability circa 1995?

    proactiveservices,

    @foo Similar goes for me but dry cleaning. I don't own any clothes fancy or expensive enough to need the dry cleaners, I wouldn't even know why to take an item there, heh. "This pair of jeans is ready for its six-monthly cold wash, I guess."
