On the 76th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba, it is all happening again. Except this time it’s much worse; Israel is much more brutal.

To mark the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, Al Jazeera have produced an excellent illustrated guide to what daily life under occupation is like for Palestinians.

Very good news! Hah!

I would really like green growth to work.

For everyone.

But for me,
from where we are,
within the terms with which we currently define economic growth…

it doesn’t look remotely realistic.

But the artefacts of pursuing it could provide a crash pad

for a bit
for some.

That’s something

Tory plans to deny access to foreign students wanting to study in the UK are already causing massive harm to UK universities and the economy of the country https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/14/tory-plans-to-deny-access-to-foreign-students-wanting-to-study-in-the-uk-are-already-causing-massive-harm-to-uk-universities-and-the-economy-of-the-country/ Overseas applications to UK universities are tumbling as a result of new visa rules that appear to be motivated by racism. The knock on effects are going to be considerable, for the country, for students and even the viability of many universities who have come to reply on this income.

Unprecedented heatwave in Bangladesh

With temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, crucial crops have wilted and yields are expected to plummet.
The prolonged heatwave has scorched ripe chillies, pulses, sunflowers, almonds and paddy crops, among others.

Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.

I am in a total state about the state of the world. This bloody Eurovision weekend- Israel getting full points in the popular vote from UK, Germany and many more, right whilst it is launching the worst yet on Rafah - is doing my head in. Reading this timeline - Netanyahu’s, Cameron’s awful statements- is doing my head in. Most of all, the awful suffering in , and the majority of nice liberal centrists really not caring - it is unbearable.

And yes - here, too the sun is shining, it’s the weekend, I am happy the children are happy and I am getting sustenance and joy from small things. And I will not shout here anymore for rest of today. But i feel all this needs to be said. This is surely one of the worst, worst things (the horrendous bloodshed and suffering everday, the horrendous complicity) we have lived through.

Hey, I’m thinking of setting up a new song contest where you can vote as many times you want for the contestant of your choice (but only 20 votes per credit card, we don’t want it to appear like a money grab after all). I’m also thinking it should be a safe space for apartheid states committing genocide. Oh wait, sorry, Eurovision already exists.

What a shit show.

Thinking about cruelty. We associate and see cruelty most with immediate, person on person or animal cruelty. Remoteness doesn’t reduce the cruelty of impact, or intent, but it makes it harder to feel and judge.

This really works in favour of those in power, who can use drones, or policy, to kill and injure others, rather than, say, a knife. And it often makes us all - unwitting, uncaring - participants.

Post Eurovision reflections..

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

I think this is what being - in its real, original sense d being “awake” boils down to for me, especially for those of us who lead privileged, safe lives:

That you might think you are a good person, just leading a normal, peaceful life in, say, Germamy or the UK, but your privilege itself means you are complicit in and benefiting from cruel, extractive systems deeply harming others. It takes real effort but you need to educate yourself and see this, you need to wake up to this.

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

This is why I think of this brilliant “are we the baddies??” meme every day: we ARE the baddies!

Also why I love The Last Airbender so much - currently rewarching it - because it shows all this so brilliantly. The fire nation is cruel and has destroyed everything around it, but inside it people are normal, friendly, likeable, human. This is what it’s like! And of course, we, the global, industrialised north, we are the fire nation.

Guardians of the Glaciers.

Interesting and moving report from Skardu and the small organic village of Khari Nangsoq in Pakistan, on what it’s like living next to a melting glacier. Too much water now, very real prospects of no water at all in the future; but also so much else.

So many places in the world going through all this; so important to understand things locally, in depth, not just in your own place but elsewhere too.

Even though all of us living in the UK know that homelessness is terrible (and has grown exponentially since 2010), it is still shocking to see this graph.

(There are notes on methods: all countries included both rough sleeping and invisible homelessness).
