#ClimateDiary I am not sure whether people elsewhere habe really grasped just how devastating the recent #Floods i. #Kenya were.

By the latest count, devastating torrential rains, floods and landslides in Kenya have killed at least 228 people since March and displaced nearly 200,000 people.

All those reading and contributing to ClimateDiary will know that questions of are central to what we are collectively trying to work through here.

This essay by Jag Bhalla, on "The Dark Origins of Optimism and its Current Cheerful Evils", is one of the best pieces I've ever read on this. Maybe the best (also many links). Enjoy.

"As Voltaire knew, optimism is often an elite-serving demon in disguise"

16th May 2024. Caught in a massive downpour on school run; another rainy, rainy day. Last April and May we were worried about drought, now the opposite. Then heard on R4 news that Sports England had released a report on how extreme weather is affecting physical activity in the UK, with so many flooded playing fields and tracks. And that they are now working in improving their emissions, to combat climate change.

Starmer’s plan is for a government offering platitudes, minor admin reforms and a few more teachers in England alone. Ambition has rarely been as small as this. https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/16/starmers-plan-is-for-a-government-offering-platitudes-minor-admin-reforms-and-a-few-more-teachers-in-england-alone-ambition-has-rarely-been-as-small-as-this/. Starmer’s six new pledges amount to almost nothing of any consequence that will have any real impact on most people’s lives. Has someone so lacking in vision, hope or expectation ever sought power in the UK before?

🔥Important paper on the costs of climate change published yesterday by Adrien Bilal and Diego Kaenzig.

They estimate that the macroeconomic damages from climate change are SIX TIMES LARGER than previously thought.

In other words: the figures and models policy makers, insurance companies etc work with need significant revisions. Once made, this should change things (should, but who knows).

I would really like green growth to work.

For everyone.

But for me,
from where we are,
within the terms with which we currently define economic growth…

it doesn’t look remotely realistic.

But the artefacts of pursuing it could provide a crash pad

for a bit
for some.

That’s something

Tory plans to deny access to foreign students wanting to study in the UK are already causing massive harm to UK universities and the economy of the country https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/05/14/tory-plans-to-deny-access-to-foreign-students-wanting-to-study-in-the-uk-are-already-causing-massive-harm-to-uk-universities-and-the-economy-of-the-country/ Overseas applications to UK universities are tumbling as a result of new visa rules that appear to be motivated by racism. The knock on effects are going to be considerable, for the country, for students and even the viability of many universities who have come to reply on this income.

Unprecedented heatwave in Bangladesh

With temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, crucial crops have wilted and yields are expected to plummet.
The prolonged heatwave has scorched ripe chillies, pulses, sunflowers, almonds and paddy crops, among others.

Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.

This article by Gary Stevenson is so good, please read every word of it.

“Whatever Jeremy Hunt says, traders know the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. And they’re paid millions to bet on it.”

Even though all of us living in the UK know that homelessness is terrible (and has grown exponentially since 2010), it is still shocking to see this graph.

(There are notes on methods: all countries included both rough sleeping and invisible homelessness).

@BioSchweiz yes, i was wondering about this. I wasntso much surprised about the UK being so high as about US being so low. I haven’t read the specific methodology for US yet but i think it’s in the link. And yes: that is the crucial question, about people sleeping in their cars! Must check that.

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@BioSchweiz yes, i know. But i was also thinking that perhaps homelessness in the US is quite uneven - ie really high in expensive urban areas, but maybe much lower across the (very large) rest of the country.

Half thinking of starting an hashtag here, about the dire, dire state of UK (global?) higher education. Sharing nuggets of senior management decisions, neoliberal language, and overall slow collapse.

Won’t work of course because most of us can’t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail.
