Seeing lovely pictures of the Aurora from places like Ohio tonight. Wonderful as they are, the Aurora Borealis being seen at lower latitudes is a sign of Climate Change and should be concerning.

@samhainnight @climatechange

I didn’t realise! Why is this - do you have more information? I jist did a quick google search but it wasn’t very fruitful.

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@samhainnight @climatechange oh wow. That’s quite a science teacher. And i am impressed by your memory.

I loved seeing the lights here in Sussex, but now feel differently about. We actually had a really weird lightning storm here about a week ago, too. Maybe the two are both real symptoms of atmospheric, climate related changes. I don’t know.

@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@brain @samhainnight @climatechange

It may be both? definitely current intense solar storm main cause, but did read here just now that

“Higher temperatures can disrupt the jet stream, which plays a role in guiding charged particles towards the poles.
Shifts in atmospheric circulation can lead to variations in the number of charged particles reaching the Earth's magnetic field lines.”

But honestly not an expert at all

@Caffetino no - just when you take a picture. Quite amazing!

Dystopia is right here. I mean, the floods in Brazil are HORRIFIC but hardly anyone notices them because there is also a genocide going on but also Eurovision (which people tell me I am a “bore” for boycotting). Neom “eco-city” in the desert given green light to kill people in its way; climate scientists and UN SHOUTING that we are racing towards 2.5°C catastrophe but noone listening. All in a day (9th May 2024).

But WILL post Figueres “let’s be optimistic” piece later too.

@DaveWhittle there is something deeply terrible but also surreal about articles like this. I mean, ALL the experts are going out of their way to say: things are really really bad by now. And yet it feels like nobody is listening anymore. Like, noone outside the climate movement cares anymore. Just as we need to care more than ever. Hope I am wrong.

How dystopian is this.

Saudi authorities have permitted the use of lethal force to clear land for a futuristic desert city being built by dozens of Western companies, an ex-intelligence officer has told the BBC.

Glad to read too that Brighton’s Duke of York cinema, usually the Eurovision venue, has cancelled this year’s party
