How to note Sunak’s election announcement here? Getting drenched in rain was symbolic & symptomatic; tragically a man died in a mudslide in Yorkshire the same day.

Will this election be decisive from a climate policy point of view? Labour will be better, but how much exactly I don’t know, given scrapped pledges. Of course i am hopeful for Green party gains. But actual positive excitement and energy, again rallying everyone to make this a etc? sadly, no.

Here an excellent interview with Maya Wind, author of “Towers of Ivory and Steel”, giving a really introduction to the central role that Israel’s universities play in advancing its settler-colonial agenda - right across engineering, middle eastern studies and archaeology, and through the settlements and geographies they themselves bring with them. Hugely illuminating, and made me reflect on complicity of all universities.

This too is going to get so much worse.

And yes, I am aware of the irony/tragedy/whatever-you-want-to -call -it, that flying contributes to climate change and therefore turbulence. And now pondering whether climate change will in turn soon make flying too dangerous, and that there is a certain justice in that. All this; but for now do feel sorry for people on this flight.

Pope Francis:

"How worried are you about climate change?"

"Unfortunately, we have gotten to a point of no return. It's sad, but that's what it is. Global warming is a serious problem," Francis replied. "Climate change at this moment is a road to death."

Waking up these days is like:

Lost in strange city, can’t find train station or children - phew, nightmare

Genocide - real, STILL going on

Redundancy looming, Goldsmiths, HE in crisis - real, not gone away over night

Climate Crisis, potential of complete breakdown - real, still there..

Time to get up! At least the sun is shining today.

How can this be. How can the killing and destruction go on and on and on. How can a refugee camp be bombed and there be no outrage or reaction. How can US continue supplying arms when there is a new invasion. And what has happened to ceasefire negotiations after Israel’s latest rejections?

18 Palestinian Shepherding Communities Have Been Recently Erased in the West Bank. This One Might Be Next
Settlers have harassed a Bedouin hamlet near Jericho for years, but during the war they have ramped up the intimidation. Clad in army uniforms, equipped with army vehicles, the pogromists have seized land in the area and set up 13 new outposts – all since October

Another
fantastic cycle around Eastbourne today, with over 200 of us, including many great very young cyclists! Most people friendly and waving, though of course a few irate car drivers … who seem to think of children on bikes as the enemy..

Anyway, it was great; nothing better than cycling in a large group in the sun. Couldn’t photograph whilst cycling - this is just before take off

Brixham, a Devon harbour town, has been struck by an illness caused by a microscopic parasite - cryptosporidium - in the water!

About 16,000 households and businesses in the Brixham area have been told by South West Water (SWW) not to use their tap water for drinking without boiling and cooling it first.

Not an expert but it does strike me as symptomatic of the state of our water companies and water system.

Moving and important documentary about and brutal authoritarian oppression. Very reminiscent of “While we watched”, with Ravish Kumar in India. These are real heroes and I feel we have much to learn here.

All day long I’ve been reading reports about the “People's Graduation” that staff, students and parents at Columbia and Barnard College held after the Columbia president cancelled the official one and honestly - this is a source of joy and sustenance and hope. I just hope, hope, hope that all these current developments are the beginning of much bigger changes; that this will be remembered as a significant moment. ❤️

#ClimateDiary I am not sure whether people elsewhere habe really grasped just how devastating the recent #Floods i. #Kenya were.

By the latest count, devastating torrential rains, floods and landslides in Kenya have killed at least 228 people since March and displaced nearly 200,000 people.

All those reading and contributing to ClimateDiary will know that questions of are central to what we are collectively trying to work through here.

This essay by Jag Bhalla, on "The Dark Origins of Optimism and its Current Cheerful Evils", is one of the best pieces I've ever read on this. Maybe the best (also many links). Enjoy.

🔥Important paper on the costs of climate change published yesterday by Adrien Bilal and Diego Kaenzig.

They estimate that the macroeconomic damages from climate change are SIX TIMES LARGER than previously thought.

In other words: the figures and models policy makers, insurance companies etc work with need significant revisions. Once made, this should change things (should, but who knows).

Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.
