It is remarkable how little big tech companies know about open source licensing.

One can not change the license of code from others contributed to your project, except you let them sign a CLA.

And as it seems, didn't. So they might face a lawsuit against , and 700+ contributors.

@vwbusguy

We need to distinguish between "changing the license" and "not releasing the source code along with the product".

The latter would be perfectly fine with the BSDL, but a license change can only be made by the copyright holder.

So basically you are not changing the license for existing code, but any new code is subject to the new license.

However, changing (bug fixing) existing code to put it under a new license still needs to be proven to be legal and I doubt.

resmo,
@resmo@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy this is what I said.

but it is still BSD and no license changed.

distributing without source --> OK

Changing License of anything you are not the only copyright holder --> NOK

resmo,
@resmo@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy So you are saying, I can take any project under BSD and change license and claim it is my project?

resmo,
@resmo@mstdn.social avatar

@vwbusguy you are correct, but the existing code is still under BSD.

Per definition redict did not change the license of "existing code" but any new code will be licensed to LGPL which is compatible with BSD.

It's a small but essential detail.

(note, redict use LGPL (not GPL) now, which is compatible with BSD)

    changed the license to Zero-Clause BSD without asking contributors for approval? Did I miss something?

    https://github.com/bigskysoftware/htmx/commit/e16f1865a494b6281f8a44ed0db5338e718b3f07

    resmo,
    @resmo@mstdn.social avatar

    @regis IMNAL, but since AFAICS there was no CLA/CTA, each contributor still holds the copyright.

    If you want to change the license of the published code, you have to ask each ("...significantly changed code") copyright holder for their permission to do so.

    One can not take other ones code and change license.

    If is so expensive, why did you ever go there?

    : "Because we bought the marketing pitch. That it was going to be cheaper, easier, and faster."

    https://world.hey.com/dhh/the-big-cloud-exit-faq-20274010

    I never bought the "cheeper, easier, faster" claim but it's true, it's much more convenient for a startup company or a "one man company" (like me) to grow and scale. But at a certain point in the cloud, you might have become "the cloud" so I guess it just evolutionary to build your own.

    @elmo@chaos.social avatar

    Finally fully finished the DIY mini networking rack that I've been working on for the past ~4 months.

    It's almost entirely made out of 3D printed parts, with the exception of the vertical rack rails and the side/top-panels.

    For the vertical rails I used actual rack rails made out of steel, the side panels are laser cut polypropylene with metal mesh glued to the back.

    The blue parts are printed out of CF-PETG, all the other panels are normal black PETG.

    Photo showing the back side of the mini rack with some cables coming out of it.

    resmo,
    @resmo@mstdn.social avatar

    @elmo it has recursive DNS even in parallel and caches (even can overwrite the TTLs of the response from the recursive) but it's true it has a yaml config which I like, so I can backup the config and rollout without clicking a web ui
