WTL, to running
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

Okay fine people who are following ; I've been thinking that it might be nice if on the first weekend (like this weekend) of the month we collectively keep an eye on the hashtag and boost a few runners we haven't seen before (especially if they have no interactions on the post or are on an isolated server) to help build out the community.

For those of you who speak other languages, feel free to translate and repost.

What do you all think?

riaschissl,
@riaschissl@noc.social avatar

@WTL that sounds like a very nice idea and also very much in the spirit of the Fediverse!

A question for my fellow runners: I will be staying in for a few days and would like to run some nice, not too difficult trail runs of about 10km in the area that are easy to reach either by foot or by bus.

Any good pointers would be very appreciated 😀

In the end, it turned out to be extremely easy to find a nice route in . Together with my oldest son we just followed the coastline for a while, then ran up a small nearby hill with lake on top and then down into town and back to our hotel. No , but still very nice 9km 😀

And all this at about 20°C, while the rest of much of Europe is suffering from a bad heatwave with temperatures above 40°C.

A short 10km evening in the area where I live. Given the heat down in the valley at over 30°C, it was really fantastic to run today at about 1000m above sea level.

And after some problems with my new shoes from , I am now unfortunately back to my old shoes from CMP. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have much luck with new shoes ...

is weird for me...

riaschissl,
@riaschissl@noc.social avatar

@sa0bse but that by itself is a wonderful thing, isn't it? My "thinking" while stops at a certain point, which depends a lot on how much there is to think about 😎

From that point on, running becomes almost meditative and the sound of my feet touching the ground becomes a rhythmic mantra that repeats over and over.

In my lifetime, I've done a lot of sports, but none have been as simple and rewarding, and also literally grounded me.

@kenkousen there's much more in your post, but given how bad things currently are at the bird side, I really loved that quote about Elmo:

"I really, really hate that guy at his point, and am ashamed I ever thought well of him."

I think, a lot of us are in the same boat ...

mttaggart, to infosec

Real talk: is Twitter still useful for anyone as a / research source anymore? It has been utterly garbage even as a reader for me for months.

Now to be fair, Mastodon/Fedi is no kind of replacement. The chrono feed means it's all too easy to miss important things, especially when most folks don't properly hashtag.

I'm finding a lot more valuable information coming from

gag

LinkedIn.

riaschissl,
@riaschissl@noc.social avatar

@mttaggart I'm at best a lurker when it comes to threat intel, but I totally agree that Mastodon lacks good and transparent . They could be applied on an opt-in basis.

The likelihood of missing interesting stuff on increases the more people from different time zones you follow, which is especially annoying when it comes to technical and scientific topics. Lists help to a certain degree, but unfortunately lists are private only ...

I think I'm old enough to be upset about the madness that , etc. are bringing to the ecosystem.

Seems like the script kiddies have decided to bring the setup.exe craze to Linux.

Why bother with proper package management, why bother keeping dependencies up to date and secure when you can create a huge binary that "just works"?

The "convenience" of developers at the expense of system security, integrity and stability ...

After many ups and downs, I finally made it to the purple section ...

Almost scary to read that my VO2max is now in the "superior" level and in the "top 5% for my age and gender" 😃. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever felt as fit as I do today, and after all, it's taken 51 years!!

In reality, this is the result of about 2.5 years of and also my ForeRunner pushing me on a daily basis. I have to admit, I'm a little bit proud of myself now 😎

@running

riaschissl,
@riaschissl@noc.social avatar

@djc @running thanks!

A few weeks ago I did a sports medical check-up because in some parts of the world you need a medical clearance to participate in competitions. All sorts of values were measured, including my VO2max on the bike and on the treadmill. The difference between Garmin and the measured reality was about 10%, so not too bad for a wristwatch 😎

But as you said, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, because there are many other factors that determine your fitness.

@emilygorcenski yes indeed, this time it started with license plates. Hard to believe that in the year 2023 anyone would start shooting at each other over license plates.

🔥 We are excited to let everyone know that our full website is now live!

We hope this will be an easy way for new users to get started with & join the wider & an organizing hub to build & spread a better, more open social web of ALL fediverse offerings.

With the in full force & the likely launch bringing new attention to the Fediverse it is all the more urgent to help

Excellent idea!

Unfortunately, the three lines menu at the top right of the site does not open on my mobile (Google Pixel 6 pro) when it is in the usual vertical orientation.

Turning it horizontal, I can open the menu, but it's still almost covered by the huge "spread mastodon" logo.

Tried with FF and Chrome, no difference.

The long-running Fediverse group service Guppe (https://a.gup.pe) will shut down on 31st May 2023 if it doesn't receive enough funding to cover its costs:

https://web.immers.space/2023/05/farewell-to-guppe/

If you want to support Guppe and prevent it shutting down, you can send donations through its OpenCollective at:

Apparently someone is threatening to have the instance I’m on defederated if they don’t get rid of me, because I posted that the Mastodon DM system is dangerously broken and non-intuitive.

So, if either of those things happen, it was nice knowing you all. (Well, some of you all, anyway.)

riaschissl,
@riaschissl@noc.social avatar

@mattblaze it will be a sad day for Mastodon and the Fediverse as a whole when popular AND interesting accounts like yours are ousted.

Maybe you can look at it as that you are making an impression and some weirdos can't handle it. Or they are trying to drive you away on purpose....

I also followed you on the bird site and Idk if it was better for you there. But I wish Mastodon gets the features you need so you can have both a safe and good time here on Mastodon.

gruber, to random

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

riaschissl,
@riaschissl@noc.social avatar

@gruber would you care to elaborate: in your opinion, what exactly is difficult to understand about Mastodon?

And how fundamentally "funnier" can bluesky be?
