Voted.

I admit, I was lazy for this midterm, and let my wife do all the research. I found it hard to get inspired by the slate of candidates.

She mostly chose the left-of-center (but-still-kind-of-centrist) candidates over the Democrats-in-name-onlies. The nut candidates were pretty easy to spot in the voters' guide -- one guy had a hipster handlebar mustache and zero experience. Shave for the job you want, buddy.

Holst mixed up the planets' order, and left out Earth.

Listening to Tomita's version of The Planets, and I'm pleased to learn it pissed off Holst's estate. That's so punk rock.

Put the disc in the slot at the top, press the lever on the right side, and look through the lenses: you'll see the first of seven views. Press the lever again to see the next image. The description of what each slide shows is printed on the disc, and is visible through an opening above and between the lenses. For more information, read the included 16-page booklet.

Another fantastically incorrect pilot show -- "The Batman Mystery Club."

Robin, in a heavy Noo Yawk accent, introduces Batman to the gathered group of kids as "Bruce Wayne, otherwise known as The Batman!" Characters in the story call Dick Greyson "Robin" and Bruce Wayne, "Bruce." It's a spooky closed room murder story set in England, and has nothing to do with the caped crusader fighting crime.

I'll admit this week's blog post was fun to write (even if the topic, demagogues, is unsavory).

How many times do I get to quote Prof. Harold Hill, post the drawing of a stork, and mention that the latest judgment against Trump was for $355 million ($450 million with prejudgment interest)?

The picture is to avoid the 500 error message

Just realized my vintage Lady Sheaffer is not a button filler which holds a footling amount of ink, but is, in fact, a cartridge pen with a dumb converter. Took the converter out, replaced it with a thrifted Sheaffer cartridge, and HEY PRESTO!

This is going to be so much better than the converter -- I'll wash and refill the cartridges, and I'll be able to see how much ink is in them.

It's still a bit too gaudy and feminine for my taste, but I like the wrap-around gold nib.

ridetheory,
@ridetheory@mastodon.social avatar

The stupid Sheaffer converter. The black button on the end only moves about 4mm, so you can imagine how little ink that sucks in each time.

ridetheory,
@ridetheory@mastodon.social avatar

Because the exterior of the pen has a grooved texture, it had accumulated some grime that I never thought I'd be able to clean out. The other day, I took a soft Japanese eraser and just rubbed it for a while, and I got 90% of the gunk out without marring the gold finish.

When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s in San Diego, the daily weather forecast was so often the same that it is still burned into my memory: "Late night, early morning low clouds and fog, clearing toward mid-day, with a high in the 70s."

After working carefully with the optometrist to get my bifocal line in the right place for me, this is the bullshit I got from them; about 7mm up from the bottom.

Obviously I'll be returning these specs, and looking for another optometrist.

On the left, one lens of my new glasses, showing the line for bifocals; on the right, one lens of my old glasses, which are almost exactly the same size as the new pair, with the line in the right place.

The hospital where my wife works is going back to limited masking precautions for staff -- on Monday. Thankfully, always takes the weekend off.

This precaution only applies to staff when they are in patients' rooms. Because, as I'm sure you know, a virus can't spread in staff-only areas. THAT'S JUST SCIENCE!

(My wife has been wearing an N95 at work for the entire duration of the pandemic, and hasn't caught it.)
