So...Kaiser Permanente won't have the COVID boosters until November, but they won't cover for their patients to get it outside their system even though they won't provide it? Like, why would you want to actively increase your patients' chances of getting COVID and having serious side effects? It doesn't even make business sense given that treating COVID patients is more expensive ๐Ÿ˜–

@JoscelynTransient Kaiser's offering me COVID boosters at walk-in right now.

@hazel There's an irony in that, as I've adopted a more femme presentation, I do actually see my mom's features in me more. And she was the only woman in the family when I was growing up, which I know she found isolating. And I want to much to tell her how much of her in me I see now and how much we could share. But...she's a transphobe, and out of filial peity, I continue to perform for her the son she would prefer.

@hazel family respect isn't the only reason

roadriverrail,
@roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

@hazel it's not like I'd be facing homelessness, but it is more complicated than simple respect. It's okay. I don't mind the detante of shibboleths and performed filial piety; part of the original reply was to show what my family loses by not wanting to know me.

Just went to a different tobacco shop, and I was offered "overseas" stuff, they even have a catalogue of about 50 different "overseas" products ... at least they ran it though the till and I paid by card ... but like wow

@aeva I work in C primarily. I have to bring in my dependencies on my own, and thus I know what their licenses are.

A collector has uploaded nearly every "Chick Tract" from Chick Publications into one easy to read and browse item.

https://archive.org/details/all-chick-tracts

If you've never heard of these, they're absolutely often-vile religious conversion pamphlets with weirdly comforting comic-book artwork accompanying the apocalyptic and guilt-throwing message.

If you HAVE heard of these (or found them in a phone booth, bus stop or bathroom)... here they all are. Post your favorite images here.

    A Hindsight Question!

    What is something you loved or enjoyed when you were younger, that isn't so great now that you're older?

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @RickiTarr The comedy of Bill Hicks. He was a sledgehammer to the facade of conformity in the Reagan and Bush years and a voice for the weirdos. Now he just sounds like the kind of White Guy With Opinions mixed with incel misogyny and enough conspiracy kookiness to put him at risk of falling for QAnon.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Tweetfiction @RickiTarr I think, in a lot of ways, Rand is optimized to be a bit of a tar pit for precocious youths. it has a veneer of philosophical discourse without challenging many fundamental assumptions about the world, so you feel like you're elevating yourself without being made uncomfortable. Adults will praise you for reading it. And it centers the ego at a time when ego development and individuation are part of one's cultural arc of development.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Tweetfiction @RickiTarr I see nothing wrong with reading some Rand within context. The real problem with Rand is that, given how unchallenging and accessible it is, a lot of people just kinda stop there. Especially if they're teenagers, it kinda arrests parts of their intellectual and emotional development in those late-teen years.

    I also think teens and young adults should read Nietzsche, but with guidance and context, as his work can also have a similar effect.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Tweetfiction @RickiTarr You know, I read that originally only thinking of "survey of philosophy", and my immediate reaction was "Hm...a lot of that's kinda redundant to Rand and/or her influences..." and then I didn't consider that the idea was precisely that. I shouldn't philosophy before coffee.

    If ChatGPT were to purposefully lie to you, would you know?

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @gabek The idea that ChatGPT could lie on purpose implies it has cognition, and it does not.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @gabek Yes, but that's humans telling ChatGPT to say their lies for them. It isn't ChatGPT lying. And this matters because words like "lie" and "hallucinate" are part of Sam Altman and co's carny con.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @gabek Yes, and I very much agree with that last sentence. ML systems are unique, though, in that part of that manipulation is ascribing intelligence, awareness, and agency to them that vastly outpaces their capability. It's not just about "liking" certain words. It's about resisting that manipulation through being clear about what's really happening here.

    @Terra The thing about Whedon is that I never understood the appeal in the first place. The original Buffy movie was amusing in a "watch it once for popcorn munching fun" sort of way, but despite everyone going on and on about what a great dialog writer he was, all I ever got were stereotype characters unnaturally trying to out-clever and out-scarcasm one another. I enjoyed the songwriting for Dr. Horrible, but the story felt problematic very quickly. 1/2

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Terra I remember being in this loathed minority in geek culture when I'd say that Joss Whedon's work just wasn't interesting or moving to me, and that I'd fallen asleep every time I tried to watch Firefly.

    During those years, there were lots of young women at cons who'd wear these "JOSS WHEDON IS MY MASTER NOW" t-shirts. I kinda wonder what they now think about having worn a slogan like that. 2/2

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Terra Enjoying cheese is a pretty legit reason. You should see the garbage I watch and rewatch. But during Peak Whedon Cult years, he was treated as the gold standard of art and geek culture, none better, never to be replaced but merely succeeded. If you didn't agree, you hadn't watched it correctly. I know because of the number of people who insisted I watch it with them so I could watch it correctly.

    The metric system is way more efficient, understandable and logical than the imperial system.
    In the meantime we are stuck with an ancient system so to make the best of it here's some shortcuts for temperature conversion:

    https://blog.prepscholar.com/convert-celsius-to-fahrenheit

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @gdinwiddie @Tweetfiction @Savvyhomestead Yes, this is what I've been saying (though, sidebar, an Australian tablespoon is 4 Australian teaspoons). Measurement systems are mostly about the practical solutions they offer and the ability to communicate scale among parties. Of course, there are also deeper questions to ask...if it's great that a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, why are we optimizing for taking 1/3 there? One finds a treasure trove of practical history this way.
