@roadriverrail@signs.codes

Signs & Codes Founder. I talk a lot about #ttrpg and especially #WorldOfDarkness (#WoD), #ham #radio, #edm, #retrocomputers, and all sorts of #foss stuff, especially systems software.

I'm #trans, #nonbinary, #transfeminine, #polyamorous, #kinky, and polymorphously #queer.

Some fediverse instance admins: “How cool, Meta invited us to the adult table.”

Yes, they did.

Because you’re what’s for dinner.

roadriverrail,
@roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

@MaryTheKnife @aral And for that, they've strutted around acting like they know what best for small, independent instance admins like me. One of them blocked me because I said they hadn't earned my trust. Talk about ensuring I definitely don't trust them now.

    @calculsoberic @DemocracySpot @rysiek @dansup @stux Hah. Wild. @stux put out some vague "please trust" stuff, which I didn't cotton to, and then, if I had to guess, subsequently blocked me.

    I and my co-admin started our instance to get away from Meta. This is relevant to us. "Just trust" with no other info isn't exactly going to create a lot of..you know...trust.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @dansup @rysiek How, would you say, the fediverse's best interests were gauged prior to them keeping those interests in mind?

    gabek, to random

    Nobody noticed, but I took about a month away from the Fediverse to clear my head and obviously I'm back now. But I'm trying to improve the balance between caring about the Fediverse and always being upset by all the potential evils that are around every corner because Mastodon is being shitty, or Facebook is showing up or whatever it is that day. I'm so tired of being angry about things. That's what Twitter was. I just want to enjoy this while still helping it move forward. I don't know where that balance is, though.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @gabek My strategy has always been to focus on my own patch of the garden. That's what I can make better. By analogy, I can't stop transphobia, but I can make my local roller derby league a place where trans people, especially younger ones, can flourish.

    You do so much for the Fediverse. Let it be enough.

    “Haha lol banks use 60 year old programming languages!”

    Yes, young whippersnapper, that’s because they need things to be reliable and not change all the time, the code probably has to run for another 60 years.

    “Modern” devs could learn a lot from not trying chase every trendy new framework and every shiny new programming language.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @thomasfuchs Also, that behavior was pored over, specified, written to standard, tested by standard, and the misunderstandings were themselves re-specified. People say "waterfall" like it's a bad thing.

    Gender Dysphoria: I deliberately stopped using this term or dysphoric (whenever possible) a while back. I have been incredibly uneasy as a trans woman how loaded the term still is with medical diagnosis and mental health connotations. It is imho:

    • a term of our oppression
    • a phrase of 'symbolic violence' (as Judith Butler might say)
    • a weak dilution of 'gender identity disorder'

    I do not deny the experience, I deny the medicalisation, weaponisation and causes

    IF in rejecting this term at every level I lose my ability to get a UK Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), then so be it.

    No compromise

    I keep my pride, my full trans agency and that - for me - is far more priceless :butterfly_trans:

    Gender dysphoria isn't something I have
    Gender, now this I do have in spades :Fire_Trans:

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Natasha_Jay I've seen similar arguments for pushing back with the term "gender trauma", and in some ways, I like it. I wouldn't have been dysphoric if I'd been free to follow my needs in the first place. I wouldn't cry in a mirror when I finally approach an appearance I recognize if I hadn't had to repress it for so long. Dysphoria is, at best, a symptom of engaging with a world that wouldn't let me take the actions I needed early enough. Not fully convinced, but it's interesting.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Natasha_Jay Oh, yes, I also very much agree with that, and I agree with the history of that term coming not only from patriarchal gatekeeping but also from a gatekeeping system designed to minimize the number of "truly trans" people and steer a wide swath of them into other "pathologies", too.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Natasha_Jay Yeah, I think the point about something like "gender trauma" others on Fedi have suggested is to really discuss the ways in which many of us (myself included) have been traumatized for our variance, often in ways we didn't understand when we were young. And working through trauma is good work to do, but it's not like doing so will "cure" us, either.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Natasha_Jay @ada I'll happily admit this was a term I saw elsewhere on the Fedi and I've been kinda kicking it around since, including here. I appreciate that y'all have turned the subject over and prodded it and experimented with it in a thoughtful way. I'm less convinced of the term's usefulness than I was before, but I do want to take it back to the lab, because something in there resonates.

    It’s not a perfect solution, of course, but queer people around the world increasingly need an underground, mutual aid relocation fund and a Genosha of our own to go to. Magneto was right.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @ryanhoulihan Lee and Kirby were such savants. They didn't know they were writing a story about queer people, they just asked questions about what it would be like to be marginalized for something other than the color of their skin and they followed the answers.

    Had a phone conversation with my mom this morning. She was relating how one of my sisters was mad because a M/F couple is going through some stuff, and the wife decided she needed to spend some time at a friend’s house. “Wives don’t abandon their husbands!”

    I scoffed, at which point I realized my mom was on my sister’s side.

    She asked, leading to a very odd and one-sided conversation about relationship anarchy vs het-norm BS.

    Did not have that on my bingo card for today.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @rick the honest truth is that most people just hang their emotions on a bunch of stories they don't really understand, and for reasons they've never once thought about.

    If Facebook and Instagram were to join the Fediverse and you could follow users from that world from your instance, would you do it?

    Boosts appreciated. I'd like to know the current consensus of the Fediverse.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @rolle I created my instance specifically as a refuge from Facebook. I don't need that kind of... interaction...here.

    100% serious: Are Bill Maher’s fans pretending he’s funny or what is going on there

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @ryanhoulihan His style of comedy is basically a snapshot from the 90s when slightly clever white guys could give some opinions mixed with zingers ripped from old Playboy magazines and look like pseudointellectual bad boys. I'm pretty sure his audience are people similarly stuck in time, people who think cheap trolling is funny, and people who think they're far more clever than they actually are.

    Remember, this guy was in a movie called "Cannibal Women In the Avocado Jungle Of Death."

    @jwildeboer I'd love for it to not be. I have a personal non-gmail account, but I'm sincerely afraid of using it as my main because my gmail account is currently taking the slings and arrows of every stonking newsletter, campaign advertisement, and other piece of unsolicited drek.
