I enjoy buying secondhand board games partly for the off-chance that I'll find something interesting in the box that wasn't supposed to be there. Any other board game thrifters on here? What's the most interesting thing you've found in a used game box?

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 That is a really cool piece of history, nice find! I'd love me some Hero Quest too, gah, seems impossible to find in the wild so might have to bite the bullet and just get a new version someday.

I haven't really found much inside board game boxes, I wonder if Goodwill goes through the box before selling it tbh. Mostly just handwritten notes or pieces from other games

Offtopic thrift finds: a Microsoft Trackball Explorer mouse and Blue Snowball iCE microphone for a few dollars each

I keep getting a bunch of Bluesky invite codes and I don't know who to give them to. If any of my followers want one, let me know.

If you're averse to bsky though, I understand, my experience with it has been subpar compared to this place

Usually when I pick up my Switch lately I'm going for Demon's Tier+ or something else quick like Maze Blaze or Wizodd. But tonight I wanted something different, more involved (but not Diablo - I know, weird, right?) so I settled on another Torchlight II run. Figured it's almost the end of the year, it's about time.

@jake4480 My girlfriend and I have been playing this on PC. I hadn't picked it up since like 2016, forgot how chill of an experience it was!

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 I remember liking the first one but it sadly doesn't have co-op. I haven't played 3 yet but compared to other ARPGs, T2 is a nice sweet spot between accessibility and complex systems

Soon, a retro game will just be anything that has a discontinued online service attached to it

Everything bagels do NOT have everything on them. They barely have anything! I feel betrayed

With the #3DS online services being shut down in April 2024, are there any can't-miss online gaming experiences to be had on the platform? It's a shame that this is happening, but at the same time most of my experience with the handheld has been in single player or local multiplayer games.

Outside of trading and battling Pokémon, I'm genuinely curious what (if anything) I would regret missing out on in the future.

@buru5 Oh yea dude I've used custom firmware on my 3DS for many years and I openly encourage people to pirate their games. It's so ridiculously easy on that platform, too.

This planned obsolescence trend for proprietary consoles/handhelds etc is why I've basically converted over to PC for good since like the early 2010s

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 It's one of my favorite platforms partly because of that back catalog support. Nowadays they want to sell you games that you already own (or subscribe monthly to a service for them)

And yes!! You've gotta hack it man. It really opens up a world of possibilities, and I promise it's not as hard as it might seem

Today's the last day of the autumn sale! Did anyone pick up anything good? Any last minute recommendations?

I always look forward to checking out this hidden gems thread, you can count on finding some good stuff to dig through. Sorry if it's a cardinal sin to post a reddit link on here! 😬

I think I'm finally ready to share my website. Been working on this off & on for over a month, it's just a simplistic web portal-type thing for all the stuff I've put out on the internet.

This is my first time making a website from scratch, so I'll likely update the design as I learn better ways of doing things. I'm in love with the old web ethos on Neocities, it encouraged me to finally make the jump!

@jake4480 I totally recommend it! It feels like I've gotten to experience a part of the web that I've missed out on for so long

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 Your web portal is pretty cool too, seems like a lot of handy resources there. I'll have to dig into it when I can sit down on the computer. I liked making this kind of site because it's an excuse to get me to make/share more stuff in my free time without any restrictions. The old web still has merit for free expression that you can't really get on the contemporary attention economy sites, at least not in the same way

My favorite type of PC gamer is the guy who writes a negative review for an old game that takes 2 minutes of modding to fix

I have a 14 year old Windows 7 (32 bit) machine on my desk here that I use mostly as a jukebox as I work (there is 50GB+ of music files on it).

Since most support and updates for anything Windows 7 is pretty much dead now (including Chrome, not that I use that anyway) and Steam officially won't work on Windows 7 in 47 days, today is the day I uninstall the 16 Steam games I had on here.

Here are all 16 great games that are currently on it, but that won't be in a few minutes. Shootemups, fps, rpgs, a simulator, and Rogue, of course.

RIP Steam on Windows 7 (in 47 days). End of an era.

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 Windows 7 was the last Microsoft OS that I liked using. I am sad.

On the positive side, I imagine all of these games should work under Proton should you choose to migrate to a Linux distro!

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 I totally recommend it, was one of the best decisions I made for many of my older computers. It makes tinkering feel like a fun adventure again.

If you still want to stick with Windows 7, you may want to look into which Steam games can be run DRM free without the client. I've been playing Dungeons of Dredmor lately and I realized this week, to my delight, that it runs perfectly on my old Windows XP machine!

One of the fun parts of being in your 30s is experiencing new and exciting symptoms that could either be life-threatening or nothing to worry about 🙃
