Newly discovered ransomware uses BitLocker to encrypt victim data

ShrinkLocker is the latest ransomware to use Windows' full-disk encryption.

Incidentally I'm thankfully still not seeing any of this Google "AI results" stuff. It sounds like nearly everyone else is. I don't know if the difference is because I'm on a Canadian IP, or because my feedback when they briefly opted me into the early beta tests was so aggressively negative they put some kind of "AI Hater" flag on my account

rotopenguin,
@rotopenguin@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc it can't be the second thing. The company that always resets your "don't autoplay" switch is not going to take no for an answer.

Did Altman pursue the Johansson deal on his own? No: the voice team knew about it, OpenAI told me today. My best effort to piece together the timeline: https://www.platformer.news/openai-scarlett-johansson-chatgpt-voice-her-altman/

rotopenguin,
@rotopenguin@mastodon.social avatar

@caseynewton Correction to the correction: the whole idea was not Altman's, it was actually his penis that decided to contact Johannson

We are in Programmer Hell

We have a ourlibrary.a file built in March

We can link ourlibrary.a into an application, it builds and the program runs

But if we build ourlibrary.a from source, the same untouched code and vcxprojes from march, it produces an ourlibrary.a that— when linked into the application— causes the final application to fail with a linker error that it can't find any of the OpenGL symbols.

Something changed on the build machine since March and we don't know what.

At 5:14 in this YouTube video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_xoKqLQrvs

The vlogger says "subscribe so you don't miss it!". At that exact moment, assuming you are not full screen, a little rainbow shimmer runs over the "Subscribe" button under the video.

…did the vlogger set a flag somewhere, or is Google doing speech rec to look for the word "subscribe" in videos and triggering a CSS effect when it finds it? Does this happen in all videos now?

rotopenguin,

@mcc is it really a "subscribe" if you don't also include the "likeshareand"?

Is it just me, or has Microsoft gone completely crazy? They are implementing spyware that takes screenshots every second and forcing AI integration. Why would anyone willingly purchase this? Anyone with experience in computer or information security knows that it is a bad idea, even if it is locally done. Just don't do it. Yet, here we are, and they are doubling down on this idea. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-new-recall-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@GossiTheDog I trust the guys that lost the golden keys to Azure, and don't know how they lost them, and detected nothing, and 𝓁𝒾𝑒𝒹 that "it was definitely disclosed in a developer's crash dump" to implement this securely.

"But it's encrypterd"! Yeah, but it's also meant to be accessed by the security principal known as "you". It persists a whole new class of stuff that used to be ephemeral. It is nothing but a fucking goldmine for infostealers.

It's fun to blame Red Lobster going down because of all you can eat shrimp, but no one really emphasizes this bit:

"A private equity firm bought the chain ten years ago from Darden Restaurants.... The firm, Golden Gate Capital, funded the deal partly by selling Red Lobster's real estate.

That meant the chain had to start paying rent. That's now a major financial factor in Red Lobster's bankruptcy filing"

VC again leaving a trail of destruction behind them

Relieved to report that I am the proud and abandoned user of the abandoned but functional Sonos System 1 controller, because I have “legacy” hardware components that have absolutely nothing wrong with them — besides the fact that I bought them a long time ago. @halide that shouldn't be possible? I thought iOS had full disk encryption*, and it wiped the drive by forgetting the keys?

*on a per partition, per security domain basis. It even has a key to decrypt the "stuff that you can access while it's locked", and a different key for decrypting the rest of your stuff after unlocking.

Cursed??? C# question:

We have a ProjectName.csproj with a <PropertyGroup><OutputType>Exe</OutputType></PropertyGroup>. Running at the command line, we can successfully run it with dotnet run on Mac, Linux and Windows. On Mac, we can open it in VS Code, hit "Run", and it runs.

On Windows in VS Code only, if we open it and click the run button, it builds a .DLL instead of a .EXE as its final build output and then fails with a message that you cannot run a .DLL.

Why, and how do we not?

rotopenguin,
@rotopenguin@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc fine, I'll just run the .dll via rundll. Or if I'm feeling extra swag, svchost.exe.
