A helluva good line:

Brought my dad out of his assisted living facility for a and to watch some . He’s essentially the only one in the facility that gets out to the bar, which is the place he feels most ”normal.” He was on two years ago so we said fuck it and started bringing him out here, and well, we’re still going. He’s a mini celebrity here, especially among the bartenders and regulars.

Should citizens of your country who live abroad be allowed to vote in national elections?

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@evan As someone who is about to gain citizenship in two additional countries, I had never considered voting in multiple countries, as a citizen of those countries, simultaneously. If you’re a citizen of only one country, strong yes for me. Not sure what it means to be a dual citizen yet though (should I really have 3x the voting power of someone else?), so only a qualified yes for me, for now, while I ponder.

@evan True. Context is my dad was born in Belfast and immigrated to USA at age 18. He ended up naturalizing while in the Marines. As part of that process, he seemingly “gave up” his UK citizenship. But there doesn’t appear to be a UK law that allows for that. So I derived UK citizenship upon birth, we just didn’t know it (or so is our understanding, we haven’t filed paperwork yet). Because he was born on the isle of Ireland, I can derive Irish citizenship too.

I'd love to be on a or focused mastodon instance. Does anyone know of one, or how to find one?

rscottjones, to random
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

The best social platforms I’m in are heavily moderated, simply because they are focused on one primary topic and don’t pretend to be something for everyone. You don’t get to post about anything outside of the core topic, and that makes it an incredibly valuable community. The sin here is trying to be too big to make huge profits; these companies aren’t about creating true community, or they’d actually build one, not a platform.

The thrust of this article is that ebikes give more exercise than pedal bikes as owners ride further and more often. This can only be true if your riding is a discretionary/leisure activity. You can ride more or less as you choose. If most of your riding is utilitarian, commuting, shopping etc, ie your journeys/mileage are broadly fixed, then a traditional bike will give more exercise. This article focuses on cycling as play, not transport

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@acs @geomannie I’m new to , but man, not sure why cyclists seem to have such a problem with pedal assist e-bikes…

Of course all things being equal, it’s more exercise on a nonmotor bike, but e-bikes literally make things not equal for a large chunk of consumers. People who haven’t ever used bikes for utilitarian purposes suddenly do if they have an ebike. This feels like a solid “win” to everyone else.

Found my old iPod, hoping it’d have some of the music I lost years ago to the cloud. Still works, and after I hunted down a corded headset, I suddenly love it all over again.

Remember back when we actually owned stuff? Those were the days…

If you're near and want to walk behind a waterfall at the Horseshoe Reservoir, now is the time to do. SRP is releasing about 2000cfs of water from Horseshoe to help refill Bartlett Lake.

Pen Pals. Online, in public. I love it. I first ran across this concept on Jerrod Blundy’s HeyDingus blog, but it looks like he was inspired by Jason Becker’s Letters Project. I see that Kev Quirk has joined in too. I’d love to give this a go, perhaps later in the year.

@msquebanh That’s really terrible, I’m sorry. My dad recently passed with covid he contracted from his assisted living facility. I pick up his ashes tomorrow. 💔

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@msquebanh That’s awesome! 30 years is incredible! Have you written more about this anywhere? 👀

I had a few pen pals back in elementary + junior high—and then via Prodigy and other dial-up ISPs back in the day—but never got to met them. 😕

Though I certainly made up for that with social media, where I've met up with 100s of my “online friends" IRL. (I even have a standing goal of meeting one online friend in person each month for the last 7 yrs now: https://rscottjones.com/meet-an-online-friend-each-month/).

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@msquebanh Well, if you’re moved to every write about it again, I hope you’ll share!

And I hear you about the covid interruption—it certainly made it much harder for me too (I also had to become an unexpected caregiver for my dad, which probably played an even bigger role). Glad you have made some new local friends, that’s a goal for me this year. In-person friends are important.

…and I’ve gotten another 3 (or has it been 4?) alerts today, all for the same heat warning that starts at 10am tomorrow, which I’ve know about for several days now since they won’t stop sending these damn things.

And I just noticed that in the official heat warning, under the Urgency heading, it simple says to “take action with next hour.”

Sigh… https://mastodon.social/@rscottjones/112555482238770001

rscottjones,

@LoneLocust I think at least one of them came from either the state or county, so who knows. Countless people must be getting these,a nd surely someone involved in the process has their own damn alerts turned on, right? Right?

Decided to snag one of these Anker 548 power banks for weekend camping trips, primarily for when I want to charge my laptop (I always have visions of writing in the woods) which requires a higher output than all but one of our existing battery packs.

We’ll how it goes this weekend.

This Sunday, June 2, is 602 day in .

It’s a clever(?) play on (one of) our area code(s)—602—and the mm-did date format—6/2.

Businesses around the valley are participating in various ways. Here’s the official list: https://www.investinphoenix.com/Documents/602-biz-list.pdf

I suggest something inside, as it might be 60.2° C outside. 🥵☀️🌵

Had a fun time barhopping with some friends yesterday, a belated celebration of my wife’s birthday. It’s also the first (and much needed) “out with friends” time I’ve gotten since my dad died.

Our first stop was The Perch, a fun that doubles as an exotic bird rescue. Our second stop, The Sleepy Whale, is one of our favorite taprooms. We rounded out the day with stops at QuartHaus and Pedal Haus Brewing.

@LoneLocust @donburnside It was definitely a sleepy place in the 80s! When I first started hearing about people moving from Mesa—where I grew up—to Chandler, I was dumbfounded. Why would you move…to there?!

Last year we hit all the history museums in the Valley and I was surprised at how interesting Chandler’s history was.

I’ve gotten this excessive heat warning every day for a few days now, all projected for later in the week. Yeah, I get it, but also: it’s Phoenix, we all know it gets hot here. One alert is enough, I don’t need multiple reminders about the same warning.

(Also, I’ll be outside that day 😂)

rscottjones,
@rscottjones@mastodon.social avatar

@donburnside This is my first year turning them on, but I will turn them all off if they don’t stop soon. I wish I could just select which types of alerts I want, or better, which ones I just want to opt out of.
