I still use Twitter a bit so I can follow a few individuals, but Twitter now keeps demanding my date of birth, with a threat of locking me out if I don't provide it.

Is that so Twitter can keep sending me dick pics without fear or being sued, just in case I am under 18?

Since Musk, Twitter is fast becoming a sewer.

This is absolutely outrageous๐Ÿ˜ก. You can argue the safety case for operating but what is undeniable is despite the having had commercial nuclear since 1956, not one gram of the incredibly lethal waste has been placed in a safe repository. The technical challenges of safe storage are immense, the political challenges even bigger. No community will ever agree.

Until the nuclear cycle can be safely closed (it can't), atomkraft nein danke.

@Wen It is discussed in some quarters (scientific , not political) but I shudder to think of the state of Dungeness in 100 years. What a horrible legacy to leave our great grandchildren.

Just in case you'd forgotten that the water utilities have been pumping sewage into our waterways on a regular basis, United Utilities have been found (again) pumping sewage into Windermere.

Not only that, strangely they did exactly the same thing the year before... its almost like they'd prefer to pay dividends & enhance executives' pay than actually fix the problems in their infrastructure.

@ChrisMayLA6 I recently learned that there is a correlation between Alzheimer's and exposure to cyanobacteria, such as grow in sewage-rich waters. Another reason why sewage dumping must be stopped. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8395864/

Another of Glasgow's Edward VIII pillar boxes. This one is on Crown Terrace in the West End. Twenty six such boxes were installed in the city during the 326 days Edward VIII was on the throne, which one source claims was more than anywhere else, but I'm not convinced this is actually correct. As far as I can track down, six of these 26 remain in place today.

@SubtleBlade For clarity, the oil is not found. There may be remote sensing data (e.g. seismic, gravity survey) that suggest a good potential for oil, but the massive reserves are not discovered until proven by drilling. Even if the first well finds oil, there will be no reserves until validated by multiple wells and an economic case made for exploiting the oil in such a harsh environment.

geomannie,
@geomannie@mastodon.scot avatar

@SubtleBlade Absolutely there should be no question of expanding hydrogen exploration to new areas, particularly very fragile environments like the Antarctic. However, it is important to get terminology correct. The media screaming the word "discovery" makes future drilling more a fait accompli; "It's found, so get over yourself". It's not found and it's important to recognise that.

I have seen media hyping of the natural resources "discovery" word so many times. It's just that, hype.

I have just been on a 5 day marine biology field course, taken as part of an online study.

It was great to meet the other students but the mixed signalling was strong. We had lectures highlighting the massive problems to marine ecosystems from , but a huge amount of the chat from participants was where they flew to recently, where they were off to next.

If a group of scientifically minded & engaged individuals aren't prepared to change their behaviour, what chance for the world?

It's pretty disappointing that City Council has yet to set a date for enforcement of the ban. The legislation was passed in 2019 so it's not like the officers didn't have plenty of notice. Maybe it will be enforced Sept '24, maybe not โ˜น๏ธ.

I've always been rather intrigued by these buildings in the Whiteinch area of Glasgow which seem to have been made from World War Two Nissen huts. I've no idea if they're really that old, though.

@thisismyglasgow I would guess immediately post war. I seem to remember that many were sold off and repurposed for peace time use.

A recent post on Twitter by Govanhill Go! reminded me of the concept of desire lines. These are unofficial paths, like the one on the right in this photo, worn into the landscape by people who would rather use them than the official routes (like the one on the left). They're generally short-cuts and often indicate a failure by urban planners to properly understand and account for people's desires as they move through their environment.

geomannie,
@geomannie@mastodon.scot avatar

@DrTCombs @thisismyglasgow Also, in (partial) defence of planners, some desire lines incorporate gradients that would be unacceptable to wheelchair users. The official paths must take their needs into account. There are 3 prominent desire lines in the vicinity of the Transport Museum. Gradients on 2 of them are not wheelchair friendly, particularly the one on the right.

@jd Cool! It a nice looking bike & not a model I know- and I work in a bike recycling charity seeing lots of old bikes. Clearly on the rarer spectrum. The Raleigh Royale was also a Galaxy me-too. That is why I spotted the similarities. I will now keep my eyes open for one. https://thevelocollective.com/british-eagle-touristique-a-classic-or-not/

Tom Lehrer

For anyone who doesnโ€™t think that Americans can do biting satire, I would like to remind you of the brilliant Tom Lehrer, born 1928 and still with us, having released his music into the public domain.

For a few apposite pieces, as relevant today as they were when he wrote and sang them I give you

We Will All Go Together When We Go - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frAEmhqdLFs

and Be Prepared https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoEVPtVk9nE

Delightful in their observation and humour (much more available)

@Wen One of my personal favourite.Tom Lehrer songs- So Long Mom (a Song for WlII)

Given the current state of the Middle East, I truly hope that the song remains satire.

I mainly cycle & use public transport. Today I was asked to drive a van & realised how incredibly easy it is to not cross advanced stop lines & enter the area reserved for waiting cyclists. Who knew?

Have I got special driving skills or is this something every driver can do?

This film about the reluctance of political leaders to talk about is well worth watching. No political party, save the , wants to raise the issues, complexities and possible future direction of our relationship with the for fear that the electorate will demand answers.

In particular are very likely to form the next UK government, so why should they risk raising the difficult questions?

I'm normally a bit sniffy about any bike stand design that isn't the classic Sheffield Stand, but I rather liked the look of these I saw in today. Maybe not quite as versatile as the Sheffield Stand but a lovely & simple bit of design.

He wasn't very Christian when he was canvassing in the street & I wanted to discuss his support for the proposed ID card bill. His closure of the discussion was to call me an arsehole and suggest that I tweet that description of me to my SNP friends. Clearly a powerful political brain.

@Selena @Lassielmr @fkamiah17 I am fine with ID cards. It was the creation of a central register of every transaction made using ID verification that I was questioning.
