Mastodon instance: <goes invite-only>
People: Mastodon will fail! This is unacceptable! Bad UX! They don't want us there! 😠

BlueSky: <is invite-only>
People: 😍 Can I haz?.. 🥺 Notice me senpai! Such elite! Many professional! :blobaww:

@jsit I've seen it. This is not a hyperbole.

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@svelmoe fedi was not cut any slack even when it was "new". There was never any slack cut for it, and I am going to wager a bet that's because there is no VC money behind it, no hype-generation machine promoting it, and no Silicon Valley techbros pushing it.

BlueSky is cosplaying
https://rys.io/en/167.html

> Almost exactly six months after got taken over by a petulant edge lord, people seem to be done with grieving the communities this disrupted and connections they lost, and are ready, eager even, to jump head-first into another toxic relationship. This time with BlueSky.

tl;dr:

  • seems designed to get secondarily centralized in the "reach" layer (as they call it)
  • moderation is an afterthought
  • Jack Dorsey

@lemeteore my pleasure, I appreciate the feedback!

> And then do a surprised picachu face when inevitably some surveillance capitalist robber baron enshittifies it to a point of complete unusefulness.

> It fascinates me how quickly people forget lessons from the whole Twitter kerfuffle, and just fall for another Silicon Valley silly con. Without even skipping a beat.

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@gvlx yup. And in the end I am pretty sure fedi wins out even without such a multi-million marketing strategy. Just by being there and giving people agency and a way to control their social destiny.

@jon thanks!

> In a pretty meaningful way, “speech and reach” is the model of today. You just don’t get to choose your recommendation/discovery algorithm.

(…)

> The only way to effectively fight harassment in a social network is effective, contextual moderation. The Fediverse showed that having communities, which embody that context and whose admins and moderators focus on protecting their members, is pretty damn effective here. This is exactly what BS is not doing.

@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

> ’s decentralization is a similar kind of decentralization as with cryptocurrencies: sure, you can run your own node (in BS case: “personal data servers”), but that does not give you basically any meaningful agency in the system.

(...)

> The rule of thumb with search and recommendation algorithms is: the bigger, the better. The more data you have and the more compute you get to throw at it, the better your recommendations will be. So it’s a winner-takes-all system.

> Of course, fedi could also have some search and discovery algorithms built on top. Operators of such algorithms (there had been a few attempts already) would also benefit from being first and going big.

> But their potential power is balanced by the power fedi instance admins and moderators have (blocking and defederating) and by the fact that fedi is perfectly usable without such algorithms. And by strong hostility of a lot of people using fedi towards non-consensual indexing.

More in-depth dive obviously, in the blogpost:
https://rys.io/en/167.html

Shout out to @tomasino, @mekkaokereke, and @dr2chase, whom I mention directly in that blogpost. And to everyone who offered their thoughts on ATproto in this thread:
https://mastodon.laurenweinstein.org/@rysiek@mstdn.social/110267191974121354

If you want an even deeper (if a bit chaotic) dive, go read that thread. :blobcatread:

> In other words, “neutrality” and “speech” and “voice” and “protection from bans” is mentioned right there, front and center, in ’s overview and FAQ. At the same time moderation and anti-harassment features are, at best, an afterthought.

(…)

> Of course the sad reality is that people will buy the hype, build communities under the everloving watchful eye of Jack “Musk is the singular solution I trust, likes are superficial if not paid for” Dorsey.

🧵/5

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@expertmanofficial you might find a mention of that in the blogpost.

Also, BlueSky follows Twitter's model of "speech and reach", with the difference that people using it are supposed to maybe one day be able to choose reach algorithms. Perhaps. Promise they will!

Tesla lawyers claim Elon Musk’s past statements about self-driving safety could just be deepfakes
https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/27/23700339/tesla-autopilot-lawsuit-2018-elon-musk-claims-deepfakes

Russian oligarchs have been using this "defense" for a while now. Nice to see US-based oligarchs catching up. 🙄

Also, I'm going to say it: this is a form of mass gaslighting.

Given the state of the service and the AT protocol, I am not even sure this is possible to do right now, but I hope someone does clear explainer on how decentralization in is supposed to work. If it’s as @rysiek says in this post, folks need to understand what they are getting into with that service. This is ignoring the other questionable things that have come up around moderation.

https://rys.io/en/167.html

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@mcg +1 on the need for a clear deep-dive explainer on the protocol, but protocol design is one thing, and implementation is another.

And then there are power dynamics within a given system, as we've seen with cryptocurrencies.

Nice walk around old Lisbon at night with @rysiek

City development, squatting, old Lisbon stories, the history of the (identi.ca joindiaspora pump.io), moderation by the user and the role of the moderators, , communities and the rise of the fediverse, the corporate adoption, the role of governments, protocol, extensions and new uses, @forgejo and fediverse integration.

That's all we could talk in two hours...

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@gvlx thank you very much for the walk and being a guide to Lisbon. Hope we'll meet again. Reykjavík is right there, just waiting to be visited!
