Shocking news today. One of husband's childhood friends died suddenly in hospital. He'd been taking acetaminophen for some ongoing aches and pains, and must have crossed the safe dose, because his liver failed. Fuck.

Remember to be careful even with over-the-counter medications, friends. 😔

@christopherd I'm not sure, but he lived in the US, and his family isn't especially uptight, so I'm pretty sure access wasn't a problem but idk

Recently I learned that the way I usually shower is called a “Navy Shower” (or “combat shower”), where you only have the water running as long as absolutely necessary and turn it off while lathering on soap and scrubbing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navy_shower

I never really thought about that, it’s just always been like that and the military connotation feels rather strange. Conserving water is just generally a good idea after all.

I guess in our probably water scarce future this will be a useful habit though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

seawall,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

@esther I learned about that from a friend who spent a lot of her early life travelling around the Pacific with her parents on their boat. Her dad always showered that way and told them to do so while on the boat or anywhere water seemed in short supply

It's really funny how when I was younger, just out of school, a lot of old people told me I'd become more conservative and move to the right politically during my 30s.

My 30s are almost over and I've only added much more radical leftist ideas to my political portfolio compared to my early 20s as well as refined and reflected on the existing ones. A process which will never be done.

Turns out age has nothing to do with it.

@esther Yeah, I found out a few years ago that the old adage is based entirely on not understanding survivorship bias, so if you hear anyone repeating it, kindly send them these two articles: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/05/poor-people-often-dont-survive-to-become-seniors-who-vote.html

Have determined that the only variance in my emotional state these days is how openly anxious or depressed I am about living through a pandemic/climate/fascism polycrisis.

Soooo, more yoga, I guess? 🙃

Nearly got T-boned by a fucking SUV while out picking up groceries, went home and cried in bed for an hour because it just reinforced my general feeling that the outside world is careless, callous and hopeless.

Love this for me.

@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

-driven disruptions are going to challenge the state structure in a few important ways:

  • People are going to move to new places, away from the worst-hit places to also-hit places that already have few resources to address the needs of people who already live there.

  • A lot of them are going to be hungry, thirsty, hot, and angry.

  • Investment in future economic activity will be worth less as climate becomes less predictable, especially in places that already depend heavily on agriculture and pastoralism for most incomes. Elites will be a lot more focused on grabbing whatever they can, now, than in investing in the public to extract more later.

  • Expectations will be thwarted more rapidly. Anyone expecting that this coup will be the one that finally fixes the mess of the last administration will rapidly become disillusioned, so surely the next coup will follow in short order.

The old state system that the world has taken for granted as an a priori obvious fixture of the global stage is already fatally broken across the Sahel and the Levant into Iraq. Mexico and Central America are in bad shape. Judging from climate models, the Indian subcontinent should be next.

@HeavenlyPossum Yeah, when we were house-hunting last year, I rejected all the very nice and often affordable places near the coast, because I thought "30 year mortgage? Let's not be literally underwater before then"

It's because COVID-19 is an exclusion for most cancellation insurance because insurers know how huge of a risk it is."

@adamhill Yup, had figured this. Some singers are still hinting at it, though, like Lizzo had to cancel in Montreal a while back because "I think it's the flu", but she posted a selfie of herself masked in bed

Madeline Miller, author of Circe and one of my favorite living writers, on the increasingly stigmatized fight to avoid reinfection while dealing with long covid:

“…how long am I going to do this? Until indoor air is safe for all, until vaccines prevent transmission, until there’s a cure for long covid. Until I’m not risking my family’s future on a grocery run. Because the truth is that however immortal we feel, we are all just one infection away from a new life.”

@kissane @stancarey This. I went off birth control when I first moved to NZ because my reliable brands weren't here, hoping my PCOS had somehow magically calmed down.

Then when my PCOS symptoms came back as bad as ever, I found a female doctor, and got stonewalled, given antibiotics for my cystic acne, developed thrush, got hospitalised with another ovarian cyst rupture etc.

Left and found a new doctor. Learner later first doctor was Catholic. 😡

So following on from that research into why people aren't signing up to the fedi, yesterday I tried a little experiment to remove some of the biggest barriers and help people make the jump.

People complain the process of signing up to mastodon is complicated, and it's hard to find the Good Posts.

So I shared with people who wanted to join two things:

  1. An invite link to the server I'm on, to stop them having to choose.
  2. My follow list in csv format, to populate the tl with good posts.

It became devastatingly clear to me, with the removal of mask mandates and no move to monitor and improve that the NZ govt had abandoned us. The choice to drop mandatory isolation rules only reinforces that. All we have now is, essentially, community defense and .

Find your local Covid-conscious folks, stock up on masks, and continue to fight (as frustrating as it is) for schools and workplaces to recognise .

seawall,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

I'm so fucking mad about this. I grew sadly used to this kind of BS back in the US, where healthcare is reserved for the wealthy or full-time-employable, then I moved here to and got the impression that at least a baseline of goodwill existed, between people, and between them and the govt. This was further reinforced by the pandemic response of 2020-21.

And then... we just 🤷‍♂️ and followed the rest of the world, into this purgatory of endless sickness and untimely death.

seawall,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

Covid and similarly contagious harmful pathogens are public health issues.

The bare minimum---MIN-IM-UM---should be:

*Mandatory isolation periods (10 days, tbh)
*Mandatory masks in healthcare settings *Schools and workplaces who insist on in-person attendance should monitor and use windows, HVAC, air purifiers, upper-room ---WHATEVER, to ensure a sanitary breathing environment

This is not unreasonable. This SHOULD be "the New Normal".

seawall,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

This is already being done for the wealthy, BTW. See hashtags like and see what Wallensky and Jha of the CDC got installed at their kids' upscale school in Newton Mass.

So it's a class issue, too. Of course. Damn near everything is, little as anyone likes to talk about it.

So ask yourself, are you fine with this? Or are you gonna get mad and get loud?

I appreciate all the boosts and faves, and I'm flattered by the follows, but seriously y'all, I'm not just shouting for clout. If you need to breathe oxygen to live, this should concern you, and I am imploring you to take a stand in real life.

People are still getting repeatedly awfully sick, not just from going out partying but just from going to work and to school, this is a public health issue and needs to be treated as such. Put the pressure on the people who could change things but aren't

I'm thinking long-term about alternatives to cars. Husband knows how to ride a bike, I only started learning a few years ago (didn't get very far), and Flip got some lessons on a balance bike at school. I like the idea of a cargo bike or trike, esp cuz I've seen good haulage options on the latter.

Where would we even start to look into improving our skills, and what our options are? 🚲

seawall,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

I would have tried to continue my cycling education in Wellington, but the combination of crap weather, hardly any cycle lanes, aggro drivers, and living in the hills of Karori for the last eight years were all discouraging factors.

Christchurch is more level with better infrastructure, but still a lot of a-holes on the road. I definitely worry about our kid's safety, on or off a bike.
