Oh to live in a world where a dragonfly-like insect, Meganeuropsis graced the skies! What iridescent hues flashed on those great wings in
the Carboniferous sun? What sound did they make as they flew?

If you know about dragon flies you know about: The Nymphs.

Nymph such an innocent word for a swamp monster. In the 15th century they were called “pond lizards.”

We know nothing of the nymphs of Meganeuropsis. But think how large they must have been! Heavier than the adults. Pond dragons!

@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

@futurebird Oh lawd, he buzzin'!

Our native dragonfly here in is pretty big. The one pictured here (not my own face, lol, from a news story) is standard, but I swear there was a larger one perched on our deck last year. I gotta find that pic, I put a soda can next to it for comparison...

@msquebanh I love stories like this. Reminds me of something that happened locally here in , an old Chinese lady's extensive herb and vege garden was hacked back by her housing provider without warning, but there was such a public outcry that it was rebuilt, and people raised money and sent seeds to replace her rarer plants from around the motu. That was two years ago, I hope she's still thriving 🌿 https://i.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/127401733/social-housing-tenants-garden-flourishes-after-being-destroyed-seven-months-ago

Bumblebees learn by observing other bees. Bumblebees, like ants, may even teach each other. In a University of London experiment a bee watched a "fake bee" (a fuzzy yellow & black orb on a stick) pushing a yellow ball into a circle for a sugar water reward. The bee copied this action.

When a nest mate was introduced, they learned by watching the bee trained in the previous experiment. I find the idea of a "fake bee" adorable.

The bee watches the fake bee push the mini football into the circle.

@lathamgreen @futurebird I showed this trick to a friend last year as we were out walking. Big tired bee on the sidewalk, I happened to be drinking a Bundaberg apple cider (non-alcoholic), and we crouched down and puddled some in a leaf for it.

If you saw a business called “rumble” with a big neon sign and boxing mitts on the wall what would you think they sold?

a dojo, right? or a gym.

Now what if I tell you their full name is “rumble dry bar”

that’s cute. boxing themed bar—

wrong again. You will never guess what they do. try.

(this kind of thing is exactly why everyone makes fun of us, nyc)

seawall,

@futurebird Yep, "dry" style salons, I learned about those just as I finished my second year (and left the biz to have my kid). No cuts or colours, just the washing, drying and styling. At least one guy in my class moved to Sydney to work at one and makes pretty good money. Lot less hair to sweep up, too, lol

I follow & practice Taoism. That doesn't mean that I sacrifice my own rights to independent & critical thinking. Doing so actually goes against our Taoist beliefs in that:
We believe in educating peoples, we believe in questioning human masters, we believe in balancing human footprints with natural worlds, we believe we are connected to air/water/soils & what we choose to do/think here & now, affects our afterlives for eternity. Nature rules above us all.

Why do shirt stays only come in humongous mens sizes even though they make little dress shirts for women (which the cleaners charge extra to clean for some godforsaken reason) and they don't stay tucked in but there are no solutions?

if you are a small man what do you do?

"business dress" hates small persons.

A group of ants arguing about lady bird conservation. Some of the aphid rancher ants complain that the ladybirds, especially the larvae eat too many of their steer. But the urban ants think they are majestic creatures who don't deserve to be hunted and they even have a whole study showing that hunting them isn't effective.

Much ant grumbling and arguing.

No one thinks it's odd at all that the ants too sometimes eat aphids. (They're our aphids!)

I'd be burning a lot more stuff down in colonial Canada if it wasn't for my family needing me to not be jailed. That's why I help wherever possible from home now. I can't go back to active frontlines for awhile & that frustrates me because I'm strongest at active frontlines & it's where I have the most experience at fighting against colonial abusive systems.

I'm doing my best from where I'm at now.
