Does anyone out there know if someone is maintaining a list of Apple mac model numbers like Mac14,2 with the friendly product name? I know there's tons of websites, but I can't find anything up to date on GitHub for mapping these

New post on Mastodon, not my first but it's been quite a while. I've been here long ago, at its start, when it was really quiet and boring. Good to see it finally got the traffic it deserves. Long live decentralization ! Kudos to those who believed in it from the beginning and never left.

shellsharks,

@kjorn Welcome back! 👋

shellsharks,

@kjorn Always watching the Local feed here 😁. It’s awesome to see new (and returning) folks on the timeline and find new cool accounts. It’s quite active both here and across the Fediverse these days!

Would love to see a alternative that is actually focused on professional growth, networking, learning and less humble bragging and lying lunatics. If there is one already please point me to it.

shellsharks,

@08956495 @jerry I remember seeing this (fediverse-Bourne professional networking) a while back on Fediverse.party but it seems nothing ever came of it https://github.com/Flockingbird/roost.

Twitter style follow-spam has made it to Mastodon I guess! 🥰

shellsharks,

@adrien Got one of these yesterday 🤷‍♂️

shellsharks,

@jerry @adrien But what if they DID help me turn $300 into $6400 in under 3 hours? 😆

mttaggart, to infosec

Okay @lawfare and @huntress, you may have decided to remove RSS feeds from your sites, but the TTI Intel Feed can still capture your articles.

And please, for any and all / outlets: I beg you, maintain your RSS feeds.

shellsharks,

@mttaggart Why would any blog, news outlet, intel source, etc… NOT want to expose an RSS feed? Is it that they want people to read via the site for ad display or something?

shellsharks, to infosec

What are some of your favorite indie websites out there?

Bonus points: What makes them your favorite? Are there aspects of the site (other than good content) that makes you like them?

Extra bonus points: Are there any -specific sites that stand out to you?

I am redesigning and adding functionality to my site and am looking for ideas to improve. Thanks!!

shellsharks,

@ittavern There’s maybe not one definition but I think of indie sites as any that are…

A. Not owned by a company, i.e. not “corporate”
B. Not on a site like Medium or substack that takes all the aesthetic flavor and originality out of the design
C. Had original content written by people, not machines.

shellsharks,

@hamatti Just checked it out. Indeed very cool! A level of CSS skill that I’m nowhere near haha 😅

is there a way on to block by a certain user? also is there a way to out retoots of posts that were previously shown already in the timeline?

edit: i suck with tags...

shellsharks,

@stf If you're talking about boosts being shown on the timeline there is this feature ("Group boosts in timelines") https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110040098801692957, but it's capability is limited

aircooledcafe, to random

A bit confused about how lists work on Mastodon. I would like to be able to add account to lists but not follow them, so they are not in my home time line but I can view the list to see them. Is this possible? I can do it in apps by hiding from home time line, but the website doesn't seem to have the option. Am I missing something or is this just not something that Mastodon natively supports?

shellsharks,

@aircooledcafe There is a feature as of Mastodon 4.2 to hide an entire list from your timeline (https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/). This applies to an entire list and you still have to follow those accounts to do this. But you could in theory have a list you maintain (or several) meant for accounts you want to have in a list but not in your timeline.

shellsharks, to random

I've talked about my dislike for in the past but after listening to the latest episode of @mike 's Dot Social podcast (https://flipboard.social/@mike/111772770875141589) featuring @coachtony (CEO of Medium) I have a much different perspective on what Medium provides to both creators and those of us who still want to find something good and meaningful on the web. This comes at a time where companies like Google and Microsoft are destroying search at a furious speed. I still would like to see people embrace the and not rely on centralized places for hosting their content but what Medium provides as a service to A. get people actually writing and B. Surface interesting things through human curation is imo really great.

So anyways, I’m going to go check out some stuff on Medium and I suggest everyone go subscribe to the Dot Social podcast as each episode has really been fantastic so far.

Explaining security conferences to non-tech friends and new people:

RSA Conference == LinkedIn. All about business, people looking to jump ship, or promote their new venture.
Black Hat == Facebook. A lot less formal, however there is this underlying corporate theme.
DEF CON == Mastodon. MUCH more inclusive regardless of skill level, sexual preferences and orientation, used to be wilder but with some better guardrails in recent years fairly decent.

When asked where Twitter fits in - I couldn't think of one as I don't attend flat earth/MAGA/antivax/NeoNazi/homophobic cons.

shellsharks,

@simplenomad I duno, I can think of one “con” that matches Twitter…

My Pillow Guys “Cyber Symposium” == Twitter
