For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@GossiTheDog about 20 years ago, Google introduced the option to press down arrow and match recent searches in the Google search box. I let a crafty colleague type into my browser momentarily and within a nanosecond, he tried to catch me out by typing the start of a smutty search query to see if there were any matches. I passed the test but learned a lesson about the speed at which someone could reveal something about you.

@GossiTheDog it's rare that I see a Q+A section that has the q and a I want to see

simon,
@simon@fosstodon.org avatar

@forgifuzzbutt @GossiTheDog I've already seen this quoted in a internal infosec slide deck at my org as an aspirational ideal, but the fact that Microsoft are heading fast in the opposite direction was not mentioned

These days when I see irrelevant ads on websites or , I smile instead of getting pissed, for one simple reason: [most probably] have no idea about my preferences. The downside is that it also suggests BS videos on YouTube.

There is also a conspiracy theory take on this too: Google knows me well, but it choose to show me irrelevant ads just to pretend.

simon,
@simon@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mehrad i find that turning off youtube viewing history seem to fix the toxic recommendations. either that or i am clearly very wholesome :)

I use on wayland and keep getting various apps showing the generic Wayland icon in the dock. I found a relatively easy fix at this section of Nick's @thelinuxEXP video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sungl8gWU_8&t=129s

Billions of people touched grass today is in the range of things i would enjoy to read about in the news

@5tern1 didn't read the news, went to the beach and touched stones, saw, smelled and heard the sea, found a butt load of fossils. Would do again 5 ⭐

Mastodon's (at least I think it's Mastodon's?) option to mute retoots from an account is a life changer. I feel there is too much traffic on my timeline lately, but I don't want to unfollow people, so muting retoots from some accounts will be a good first step to calm things down

simon,
@simon@fosstodon.org avatar

@stfn I like this feature. I wish it was easier to filter future occurrences of certain words from the timeline interface though, rather than going into the unwieldy settings menu

For all people here that use and Lyrion Music Server. There is a community firmware update for Squeezebox Radio, Touch and Controller. I wrote a blogpost why and how to update to the latest version: 8.5.0.

My understanding is that some people use the internet to watch porn. How excited are those people for Windows to constantly take screenshots of everything they do on their computer, 24/7?

simon,
@simon@fosstodon.org avatar

@jhpot next phase, MS takes a screenshot via the webcam every 5 seconds too.

mttaggart, to random

Listen.

It's not about whatever Microsoft is doing with these features today. Maybe it's apocalyptic, maybe it's not. But what we're seeing is next-level disregard for user choice about their OS. Yes, even for Microsoft, this is exceptional.

And in the constant pursuit of monetizing our data or extracting training sets, we must confront the question of what they will push on us next, without consent or reasonable recourse.

This is not an OS under owner control, and as such, should not be trusted for any purpose where data security is a concern.

I struggle to think of a use case where it isn't.

simon,
@simon@fosstodon.org avatar

@mttaggart there's a whole lot going on. A Worrisome erosion of the concept of privacy and consent from tech bros (click yes, or maybe later - a technique Sam altman tried on scarlet Johansson and then just did it anyway). The whole thing where people on reality programmes eventually forget they are constantly being filmed. And Microsoft's terrible recent record of information security beaches and cover ups. I wouldn't want it from any vendor but I especially don't want it from Microsoft

🆕 blog! “Why do people focus on AI's failures?”

I saw a prominent AI proponent asking why people always focus on the things that AI gets wrong. AI works so well, he asserted, that it was churlish and childish to focus on a few minor mistakes? Which reminds me of an experience I had a few years ago. I was in a rural pub […]

simon,

@jhpot you might wanna double-check your comments about DMs. although some big name accounts mentioned DMs i don't think anyone has actually checked with slack themselves. certainly the privacy policy doesn't suggest the DMs get slurped.
