My coworker wrecked at the bike park again. Third wreck in two weeks. We were reflecting afterwards: mountain biking is a great way to meet women. Doctors, nurses, EMTs, physical therapists, insurance claims adjusters...

Living dangerously today. So far:

  1. Went hiking through a poison oak infested trail.
  2. Opened up a beehive and moved it from one box to another.
  3. Harvested stinging nettle and ate it for lunch.
  4. Picked up a fluffy, white pet bunny (who would like to bite your arm off).

(Yes, the 4th one is the most dangerous of all those activities, as demonstrated by Monty Python).

@ai6yr my "pet" rabbit would hop up in my lap and bash me with her head so I would pet her and if I didn't pet her correctly, whatever that meant, she'd bite me hard enough to bleed. I'd say up there with bee handling, only meaner feeling. The bees are operating in self defense. She was just mean.

@benjohn @MLE_online about 70% of the time that I try to save a snake on the side of the road, closer inspection says it's already been run over and is dying, which is really depressing. But I always try anyway.

It took me a long part of my adult life to realize that 1) most people don't agree with my pie-in-the-sky progressive vision of the world, and 2) voting is harm reduction, not marriage. These are rough truths, but truths they are.

@pearlbear there have been times when we voted to make things better, but for the last 30 years it's been mostly voting to keep things from getting worse. Definitely harm reduction.

I saw a cybertoy^H^Hruck in real life for the first time today, riding on a transporter.

It was painted flat black.

I am amazed that anyone would be seen in that monstrosity even for free, let alone paying for the dubious privilege.

I suppose flat black might be an improvement over blotchy rust?

    @Dangerous_beans @MLE_online I had a machinist tutor who said "if the chips aren't coming off blue, you're wasting time" and chips so hot they're sometimes glowing were why I got pretty invested in leather shop aprons. They make a mess of chest hair.

    It's extremely windy outside, and they're forecasting up to 100mph gusts across the whole metro area. After the Marshall Fire in 2021, where several fires, one possibly from a downed powerline, swept through the western suburbs of Denver, driven by 70mph winds, it appears that the power company may be cutting power to some of the area, including where I live. This'll be interesting. Right now it sounds like a jet aircraft is running at idle just over the hill.

    If you look at wind records for this area over the last 100 years, getting >80mph winds used to be a once every 25 years event, and only just outside Boulder on one ridge. Now it's something that happens multiple times a year across a much broader area. This is the first time I remember seeing a prediction of gusts over 100mph for the area I live.

    @GustavinoBevilacqua I had a coworker who is as unwise as I am, and we'd take off in a 60mph wind day and ride right into it until we were physically unable to continue, and then coast back. I have several local records on a bike tracking website because I averaged just shy of 100 km/h on the way back.

    @GottaLaff There's no way this would ever happen, but I like imagining the repercussions if they ended up ruling that people who belonged to those religious groups could legally get reproductive health services. The unintended consequences would be really interesting.

    Sadly, I wasn't able to fix all of the flaws (a tendency to explode being the primary one) in my robot, "Footloose", so we won't be competing. However, I'm here at UIUC to cheer on my son Justin and my bouncing 1-lb grand-bot, "Singularity," (pictures below) as well as his team's 30 lb bot "Collosal Avian."
