Okay, so I'm going to type out a sentence, and I want you all to finish it, but instead of doing deep thinking about it, just type the very first thing that pops into your head. I know this will be hard for many of you, but try it! LOL

In , today is "makara ", the astronomical event when the Sun begins "northerly movement" (uttaraayana उत्तरायण in Sanskrit). It's also the astrological event when the Sun enters Capricorn (makara) in the Hindu zodiac.

Also called "", the day marks harvest in South India. It is common to gift trays w sugarcane, bananas, sugar molds, + mixture of jaggery, peanuts, roasted bengal grams, and sesame.

Best wishes to all who observe.

Social-media conversations would be so much easier if people read what is written and respond to that, instead of posting a response they have already decided based on what they know, believe, perceive, and assume, all of which they seem to do based on who they are replying to instead of what they are replying to.

In essence, instead of a dialog, we get a bunch of simultaneous monologs, criticisms, dumb downs, put downs, and suck ups. 😤

"Breakfast", one of few words English gets right but people won't let that be.

What it is: The meal to end a fast, whatever time of the day the meal happens to be. A fast being at least an overnight window with no food consumed.

What it has become: The meal first thing in the morning, but not any other meal later in the day, regardless of the fasting situation.

Slapping the labels "enshittification" on businesses and "fascist" on individuals is all the rage now.

Though justified in many cases, these labeling acts are quickly becoming a "See I'm woke too" sort of virtue signaling.

People with tens/hundreds of thousands of followers doing this, and their posts getting hundreds/thousands of uncritical engagements is only going to make things worse.

The thing is about Australian wildlife is that most Aussie animals won’t back down from a fight, but most of them don’t go looking for a fight either.

If you’re worried about visiting Australia because of our deadly fauna, here’s a hint. If you see an Australian animal, walk away from it.

A kangaroo has trouble disemboweling a retreating person because its attack involves rocking back on its tail and kicking you with both feet. It’s not really able to do any damage on something that’s moving away.

Magpies will generally let you know where their territory is, and if you stay out of it while they’re nesting, they won’t knock a hole in your head.

You literally have to get in the water to be bothered by sharks or crocodiles. Swim where the locals swim.

Snakes and spiders are about the only thing that you might happen upon by surprise and they tend to be happy to let you leave, but will happily fuck you up in self defence.

Y’see, Aussie wildlife mostly kills idiots who approach it, try to pat it, or catch it. Our animals mostly kill and maim stupid people.

I guess, my point is, we don’t have anything like lions or bears that will chase you down, pull you out of your car and tear you to pieces.

Also, the chances of being shot in this country is almost non existent.

Australia’s a pretty safe place to visit, comparatively.

A log of my significant walks and hikes in 2024. 📓 👇

My 2023 significant walks and hikes 👉 https://hachyderm.io/@smurthys/110147253810174154

smurthys,
@smurthys@hachyderm.io avatar

6.5km New Year Day walk. Significant only for starting the new year well (enough). Notably faster than usual pace and better HR performance. Also, the first outing this season in cold and windy conditions requiring serious pants, socks, shirt, jacket, hat, and gloves.

Though simple, I hope this walk sets the right tone for the rest of the year. But today is "rest day" due to rain, work, and errands which is just fine after 3 consecutive days of ~33kms walking/hiking.

Back view of a man in black pants, black and blue jacket, dark beanie hat, and black gloves. The man is standing on a paved trail by a large field with low cut grass. Some power lines and home in the distance in the direction the man is looking.

12.1km Sunday walk during Hours 26-28 of a 30-hour fast. It was both a literal and a figurative "walk in the park". 😆

The waterfall was full after recent rains. The sight of a hopeful Great Blue Heron at the bottom of the fall was nice. Too bad I don't have a good enough camera for the distance and light. That and I'm not a good enough photog.

Anyway, ended the first week of 2024 with 25kms walk in 3 outings; short by at least 12kms, 2 outings. ☹️

Decorations at the edge of a green picnic table in a park. Green letter formation spelling HOPE on top of the table. Red balls hanging under each letter.
Waterfall on the left, dry brown branches top right, a heron standing in the water at bottom left, looking toward the fall.

14.1km forest hike (by a lake, while fasting) on Thursday when it was sunny 71°F (22°C). My first time on this trail and it was beautiful. Worth the drive, will visit again.

For the most part, the trails are a bit wider than my liking: designed for greater foot traffic and to generally be accessible. But they make up for it with some nice features as well as good views and beaches.

Did manage to get a few good (for me) pictures. More pictures 👇.

An old metallic windmill displayed on the side of a gravelly trail. The mill's blades appear somewhat blue and parts of it look rusty. Leafless trees in the background, grassy knoll.
A sandy beach by a blue body of water. Trees and boathouses in the distance.
View of a lake with a land mass in the middle. Brushes and parts of a tree in the foreground. Bright sun in the blue sky above.
