nowadays most people seem to recognize that civilian deaths are generally worse than military ones. but most seem to not draw the conclusion: to turn people into soldiers is a horrible crime.

I still don't know how to use mastodon, I feel like I'm only here to share my stuff and read replies, and less so any kind of discovery of following and engaging with other people's stuff

it seems like there's only a chronological feed of those you follow (which I usually don't like because it skews to the most active people), and a generic feed for your instance (pretty much useless), but no algorithmic discovery thing?

> I feel like I'm only here to share my stuff and read replies

that's a completely fine way to use it, of course. otherwise i second the hashtag thing. you can also hide people's boosts or only show certain languages when subscribing to people, which i find quite helpful.

does any have something like partial evaluation based on named parameters? so like , but you can add the parameters in any order, and get a function back that that evaluates the still missing parameters?
it seems pretty handy to me…

here is an example for how i think this could work in :

oh btw, what is that bullshit on the , where you open the URL of an image (and it served an image from there before) and suddenly it gives you a webpage? it's like the server knows exactly when i visit the adress directly. how do they do that, and how can i stop it?

it's so sad how little UIs have changed, even with multi-touch hardware being fairly ubiquitous nowadays. i think part of the problem has got to be that UI programming still kinda sucks, at least from what i've seen…

are people now actually using this thing? do they at least have federation working?

i'm baffled how willing people are to jump straight onto the next centralized, proprietary bandwagon, like "oh! maybe this won't be used against me this time!".

like, of course it will! the purpose of centralization and monopoly is power and exploitation. i guess people just think it's normal to be at the mercy of monopolists when it comes to (social) software…

it's interesting to see how some anarcho-communists treat Elinor 's work on management. it seems for them, resricting access to ressources is suddenly obviously the right thing to do, and everything else is just a vicious strawman.

yet, restricting access to ressources unless you give/do something for it is this awful thing and completely unnecessary.

i wonder how they may justify this…

so, there is this this space filling curve called a Gosper curve, which got some neat property like forming a fractal island that can tile the plane.

however, the best part of it is that it's also called a flowsnake 😃.

i love how much the current wave of fucks with the cultural tropes we had about computer intelligence. instead of cold, rigid, logical planners, they are moody lumps of intuitions, who respond differently when you ask nicely, have trouble staying on topic, and may just make up stuff that "sounds about right".

i think many false expectations are because we can't quite imagine computers doing things like that.

they still can't make good jokes tho 😅.

little reminder: phone numbers are a terrible way to identify/authenticate people.

  • not everyone has a damn phone, and they suck anyway.
  • cellular networks are insecure. not just because of bad crypto (that might have improved for all i know), but because telcos can intercept/impersonate you and that's not even considered a design flaw.
  • they aren't even memorable. if you want to identify people with a random jumble of symbols, you might as well use a public key.

Do the americans realize that that's the same for the rest of the world with their stuff and better does not make the round?

Nearly every other social media company is under the influence of the US government and their hairy shitty laws.
