This makes me want to scream: how is this not obvious and normal?! Gaahh!

As a person experiencing long covid effects, and reading about folks who are much worse off than I am, I ask: how can we not all be wearing masks in closed public spaces?

We know it can be spread by asymptomatic people. And that risk of severe increases with multiple exposures (whether you felt sick or not).

I wouldn't wish long covid on anyone. 😢

That post seems to have gone.

Many countries relaxed their mask rules in 2022 and almost all by 2023.

However, masks have been reinstated in some places, such as hospitals and public transport.

Thanks! I saw the article link the first time I tried but got an error when I looked again.

Another day indoors avoiding the rain and gusts of wind (to 42 mph this evening). :blobpartlysunny: 🌬️

  • a good start to the day - washed and dressed, porridge for breakfast and put a wash on for clean sheets

  • made lunch with the leftover chips from yesterday's trip to the local shop

  • Safe and warm indoors, as I didn't have to go anywhere today. Got started on my annual quest to pay my NIC2.

  • my heating working on a frosty day. The temperature outside was -4°C when I checked this morning.

  • my first attempt at making garlic & lemon sauce went well, even though I had the pan a bit too hot.

  • Caught up on some housework, put out bird food and went for a walk in the evening darkness. Some paths and parked cars were still covered in a sparkly frost from this morning. The stars and the moon shone brilliantly in the cold air.

Okay, I'm thinking about gift giving today. A little backstory about why:

Every year my Father-in-law attempts to get my Mother-in-law a gift. She is a bit of a shopper, and is notoriously difficult to shop for. Every year he gets her something he guesses a woman would like (perfume, sweater, jewelry), and every year she doesn't really like it, and ends up begrudgingly using it or returns it. They have been married over 30 years, and seem to have a pretty good marriage otherwise. It's like she wants him to magically understand what she wants, and he is sort of equally bad at the whole thing too. I will never understand why they don't just have a conversation about this. Just for extra fun, she is the most bizarre gift giver, also, to the point that it has become an annual tradition that I show my friends what she got us. A small list of things we have gotten:

A couch cover with grapes on it
A sexy nightgown
A painting of the house they live in
A gourd painted to look like a cat eating a bird
A package of tea that I would have absolutely loved, stuffed with cheap tea bags
Children's Lego sets
Toy trains
Underwear that didn't fit either of us
A wooden board covered in seashells that is supposed to hold a curling iron
A waterproof bed cover

I could go on and on. Just to clarify this doesn't bother me or my husband at all, we actually get a kick out of the weirdness. I don't personally care about presents much, I'm more of an experiences person.

SO, if you've managed to get this far, how do you feel about gift giving/getting? Feel free to elaborate and give examples!

srfirehorseart,
@srfirehorseart@ohai.social avatar

@RickiTarr @sollat

Two friends of mine keep the cards I made for them. Probably because I draw & paint the art to match their interests.

Even my personalised shop cards and postcards go down well.
:blobcathearts:

I should probably do some in advance as making them at the last minute often means they arrive late.

srfirehorseart,
@srfirehorseart@ohai.social avatar

@RickiTarr

My feeling is that I'd rather get something I've specifically asked for than a surprise gift. The problem is that I'm often unsure what I want until I see it for myself.

However one friend is impossible to buy for as they're a shopper and better at finding what what they want than I am. For their birthday this year, we settled on my taking them to lunch and giving them a card. I felt this wasn't much but they insisted they're very happy with that.

Avis car rentals are tenacious, I'll say that. They've been sending me my "0 miles" account statement for the 9yrs since I last used them.

When I last used them they pulled off something bizarre.

Rather than use the credit card I presented, they managed to process a charge to an AMEX corporate card that was cancelled 12 years earlier, and affiliated with a company that was also defunct. My home address hadn't changed, and so Amex processed it and sent me a bill!

This could also mean that there's a database that's in breach of the Canadian 'Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act' (PIPEDA).

In the EU/UK GDPR rules mean that old data should be deleted unless it's absolutely necessary to keep it.

PI wanted us to make some diagrams to show timelines for projects and i was like HOW ABOUT instead of a bunch of random powerpoint slides that we immediately throw away after lab meeting, why don't we use our SEMANTIC WIKI so we can logically encode relationships and timelines in project page metadata and then automatically generate these graphs as a byproduct of documenting our projects!???!?!

I don't know how labs do anything without a wiki, google docs is a plague! save urself!

Example wiki markup for creating links. Human-readable text is intermingled with semantic wikilinks allowing one to document in peace while still creating structured data! The text indicates that the page is part of "servers" and "earthseed" pages, and is related to "Mirror DANDI" and "Calcium Imaging Analysis" The rest of the text in the page: """ Or, more specifically, the Storinator Q30 enhanced. Also known as seedbank, and boy is she a mysterious one
Rendered text for the wiki page! just the same text except as normal font instead of monospace font with markup. The only difference is that "seedbank" is in a bright orange gradient block in comic sans!

Wikis are great but I also like colourful visuals. Do both (I see you have).

I also love drawing because I'm a visual & kinetic learning person.

Years ago I realised that I learnt faster if I wrote things down. I also forget stuff once the job is done, so I think it's great that you're documenting as you go.

Meta AI chief under fire for saying authors should give books for free

"The lost revenue for authors would be small, and the benefits to society large by comparison."

What's your views on this?

@suswatibasu

That depends on how he sees "the benefits to society " working out.

On something like Universal Basic Income free stuff may be an option but how else does he expect creators to be supported?

I often wonder whether Mastodon’s civility is down to its small size and (relative) inaccessibility.

Is there anything innate to the platform that keeps us honest on here, or is it simply that the barriers to entry weed out most of the bad actors?

Been thinking a lot about this in light of the potential federation with Threads without reaching any conclusions.

srfirehorseart,
@srfirehorseart@ohai.social avatar

@beach

I think that most instance moderators are doing a great job and that's why it appears civil here. Combined with limiting instance growth so they can keep on top of things.

It's a very different story on instances that go for unlimited growth and a free for all, or those that permit or advocate for hate speech as 'free speech'.
