My son's grade 6 teacher is leaning full tilt into the "embarrass you in front of the class for benign requests/mistakes" method of authoritarian #teaching.

I'm caught between wanting to call her out on it, vs, not wanting to make things worse for him since she seems like the retaliatory type. And there's only 1 month left in the school year.

Sigh.

Why does want to implement ? It's not about images. It's about modelling what workers do on Windows, and then replacing them.

The most expensive part of a computer is the fallible feelings-filled unpredictable meat sack that operates it.

Google has YouTube, Google Photos, Maps, and a bucket load of search data, Google Analytics, advertising, as well as it's data (e.g. transcriptions). And a bunch of data from Android services. From this data they can model speech, model videos and model advertising systems, and how humans respond to them.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Amazon has Prime data, and a bucket load of compute. But no operating system data. They can build models based around e-commerce and advertising systems.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Meta has waves hands enough analytics to model human behaviour in the Metaverse.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Microsoft has GitHub.
Microsoft has LinkedIn.
Microsoft has SharePoint.
Microsoft has Teams.
Microsoft has Dynamics.
Microsoft has O365.
Microsoft has Windows telemetry data.

Microsoft can model what people do on (Windows) computers. Like fill out spreadsheets.Write emails. Synthesize web pages of research. Interact with colleagues on Teams. Create and edit documents.

Microsoft wants data so they can model what people do with operating systems.

Then replace them.

Imagine a CoPilot that doesn't just write buggy code. Imagine one that also does spreadsheets. That creates documents on SharePoint. That communicates with colleages on Teams. That has a customer pipeline on Dynamics.

That's what Recall is about - 360 degree surveillance of the worker, to model their functions, make them fungible, replicable - and replaceable.

@KathyReid 💯 The real privacy problem won't even be the snapshots that are stored locally (even though that's really bad). It will be in the "anonymized" data it sends home. It will even be able of offload some of that processing onto users' machines before it's sent.

Find the patterns in this user's behavior, then send that to MS.

I take comfort that soon my jovial attempts to ask real people things will no longer be met with "why didn't you just Google it?"

Asking each other directly is going to soon be the more easy & accurate path.

Also, big sheesh to those who think talking among peers is an annoyance people should try to avoid.

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@ocramius Hence why I try to ask people who I know have some expertise in the area & not randos online. 🤣

I've literally had family say this to me. Eeesh sorry I wanted to chat with you about something you know about. 🙃

doing the thing they are building tools to facilitate everyone to do (imitate the likeness & creative output of real people)... is exactly the signal we should all be recognising it to be.

🚩Copyright & licenses don't matter. Creators don't matter. You don't matter.

We've all been told that our ability to grind out work-value is what we exist for... but even that poor measure of our worth is fair game to those big enough to steal it.

Couldn't resist a session on Victoria Day (🇨🇦) with The Victorious 4 (our party name)!

We tracked a group through the forest & defeated a hill giant, 2 veteran knights & a wayward mayor who we captured to bring back to town to face justice. A job well done. 😁🎲

really didn't do anyone any favours by making EVERYTHING a post and stuffing everything into the Posts table.

I don't know how they talked themselves into the idea that Media uploads are 'posts' but this is really bad architecture.

(Coming from someone trying to do some fancy migrating of media.)

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

Like guys... there isn't a limit on the number of SQL tables you can have. It's not DB golf where fewer tables = better. 🤦‍♀️

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

Exporting a month's worth of media uploads shouldn't be this complicated and shouldn't need a plugin.

The importer should allow me to import just the DB/Meta data if I don't check the 'download & import files' box (importing huge files from a password protected staging site) and allow me to just ftp the actual files up.

Utter nonsense.

So much of is actively hostile to the idea of having multiple environments.

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@feld I mean.... if you're approaching 4 billion tables... you got other problems than non-normalized WordPress data. 🤣

@pierstoval A lot of ppl in the comments mentioned Outer Wilds!

syntaxseed,

It's also something I had hoped would have a lot of, but it doesn't at all (for me). 😓

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@pierstoval Oooh! I forgot which game Outer Wilds was. I just couldn't get into it when I realized it's a timeloop without saving. I just can't stand games like that. 😓

@pierstoval And I was past the Steam refund timeframe. So it sits in my library, mocking me. LOL

My son's game last night (peewee + bantam boys' house league) featured a grandslam homerun followed by another homerun, both by our team.

Gonna be a GOOD season! ⚾

@Aaron Yeah there was a lot of complacency in those 200 years I think. But Amazon's warehouse locations & how they decide what is stocked where... is a big factor.

“Fictional and factual fembots reflect the same regressive male fantasies: sexual outlets and the promise of emotional validation and companionship. Underpinning this are masculine anxieties regarding women, and fear of technology escaping our control.”

@jasonkoebler This fear, that humanity will stop reproducing because of AI girlfriends always seems backwards to me. As critical as men think they are in the reproduction equation.... it's never come close to being difficult for a woman to find a way to become pregnant (fertility challenges aside). In fact it's often too out-of-our-control easy.

It's AI boyfriends y'all should be worrying about. 🤣

Unlocked a new achievement today...

First time dumpster diving on a construction site & brought home a bunch of 2x4 & 2x6 odds & ends, plywood, plastic pipe & insulation foam board. 🛠️

What can we add to the ninja course next? 🤣

A tidy stack of wood pieces. In a garage.

My 12-yr-old figured out how to bypass the parental controls on .

He couldn't find the movie Wish on the kids' profile... so he created a new profile. Which doesn't prompt for password or pin & gives you access to all the content. 😬

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@afilina We did that too... until my oldest broke that trust (in a mild way but it was the point) so the parental controls went on. For a little while then we'll try again.

It's tough because my oldest is 12 but youngest is 8. So what's ok for my oldest is still a bit scary for the youngest.
