disassembled all of the firmware for my headset that was in the EEPROM

it's a custom Avnera-specific CPU, so it took a few hours to design a machine code layer for it

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark is it based on an existing ISA or is it completely custom?

"Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

The computer, however, will stop you from recording DRM'd content.

Find it fascinating that when faced with drawing safety and security boundaries, the primary beneficiary is not the owner of the device, or the person using it, but random corporations who control the intellectual property rights.

The system doesn't work for you.

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@sarahjamielewis it's infuriating to me that every operating system is full of APIs for rendering text to the screen, only for us to take pictures of that text and scrape it back out with OCR.

i think i have five copies of clang right now in ~/Projects/yowasp, not counting the LLVM tree that i'm building

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark are they at least the same version so you could use ccache to avoid building it a zillion times?

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark I bought a 2TB M.2 SSD for my son's PC, it wasn't ridiculously expensive. I think I paid $130 for it.

Somebody should make an OS-agnostic program that searches the hard drive and returns a count of how many versions of Python you have installed

@mcc call it ophiology

Thinking about how Mozilla is "pivoting to AI" but DeepSpeech, one of the very few "AI" products you could possibly find a positive use for (pure-local speech recognition), is not only a Mozilla product but so abandoned that you actually have to downgrade to Python 3.9 to run it

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc DeepSpeech was one of the most wonderful things Mozilla has ever produced. It's completely unsurprising that they abandoned it.

I'm on here looking for text indexers and everything is 'lightning fast exoscale terafloops that scales to enterprise quantawarbles with polytopplic performanations' and it would be great if this industry could breathe into a bag until it remembers that one person with one computer is a constituency that matters.

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@mhoye the Quickwit marketing text says all the enterprise things you dislike but the docs say that it's a single binary you can download and run on your machine: https://quickwit.io/

tedmielczarek,

What the fuck is this?

Is my phone doing this? If so, how long has it been doing it? Also, why wasn't I informed? Also, why can't I find a setting to turn it off?

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina I took a class in college where we used Prolog and I loved how it made me think differently about everything.

Joe Biden just banned Tik Tok.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/biden-signs-israel-ukraine-tiktok-bill-into-law.html

If America can do this to Tik Tok, America can and will do it to whatever internet thing it is you like just as easily. Don't imagine China itself was the point of this. (The ban[s] cover ByteDance plus any company 20%+ owned within a country on this short list https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/4872#:~:text=metals%20and%20alloys.-,(2)Covered%20nation,-.%E2%80%94The%20term but given how easily this passed it seems a precedent is set for Congress to add whatever other company, organization or country it feels like to the list.)

tedmielczarek,

@mcc @Tathar as you pointed out in your thread—the US gov't only needs to lean on Apple and Google and get them to comply by delisting the app.

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc a while back Apple did loosen up one path—if you compile an iOS app with xcode you can install it on your own device without needing a developer license. The fact that this bill explicitly calls out "source code" though, phew.

As an immigrant I get annoyed when people say American food is bad coz it’s only burgers.

First, immigrants exist and our Americanized foods are glorious (I’m aware burgers also came from immigrants, but that’s not what those people think)

Second, all burgers are glorious (incl vegan burgers and fast food burgers)

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte the fact that the food stamp program is intentionally designed to not let people buy prepared foods, steering people towards ultra-processed packaged foods, is truly evil.

I've heard interesting things about jj (Jujitsu) (https://youtu.be/lmuCU5MrYfI&t=36s) so I'm gonna try it out. Thoughts in this thread. Unless I get bored and stop

tedmielczarek,

@mcc If you don't have cargo-binstall installed, cargo install cargo-binstall will install the cargo-binstall bin in ~/.cargo/bin.

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@mark @mcc it's hard to justify learning it on your own given the dominance of GitHub in both industry and open source work, but it is a lot friendlier in many ways. It also has a nice mechanism for extensions that allows for some really interesting customization.

cliffle, to rust
@cliffle@hachyderm.io avatar

An offhand remark from @rain caused me to realize:

There are two common models for implementing async in modern languages.

Java and JavaScript use the "katamari" model where leaf tasks are promises that stick to the outside of the eventual end goal and can be evaluated directly.

Rust uses the "pacman" model where the outermost future literally contains the ones it uses and is responsible for running them itself.

(This started as a joke but it's actually sort of right?)

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @cliffle @rain optimal box-packing async model where the computer jams your promises into memory in cursed-but-optimal configurations.

vsaraph, to random

Dropping this here on mathstodon, seen a few days ago in Little Rock, Arkansas just by the river.

Days later, I am still wondering about how to think about the topology of this shape. In my mind, I want to deformation retract it to a 1-dimensional thing, since deformation retraction is a homotopy equivalence, which preserves homology. But I’m still having trouble visualizing it.

Professional topologists on this platform, any insight into what to make of this shape?

tedmielczarek,
@tedmielczarek@mastodon.social avatar

@vsaraph It's titled "Interwoven", apparently: https://www.codaworx.com/projects/interwoven-city-of-little-rock-public-art/

and it does say "A complex sculptural exploration of of the Moebius Strip"
