A from today's walk after we got cupcakes. Have I mentioned lately how great it is to be on vacation and not dealing with open source software security at work this week? 😂

Photobombing dog.

I was taking pictures of how far along the buds on my maple tree are because the "this time last year" features of the photo app are an interesting way to track if spring is actually early or if it just feels that way because spring starts here a few months before it does in my original habitat.

Also, that's not grass: Hatch is standing on the moss that covers ground on that side of the house. You can see the colour change in the green where there actually is some grass on the right hand side of the photo. It's beautiful but easy to slip on!

Hatch says he can smell a drop of butter left on my plate and he would like to take care of that for me. Happy !

Decided to konmari the end table by my living room chair (which has a couple of drawers full of stuff) and I found a lot of things that bring me joy.

And I don't mean that in a "I'm bad at cleaning, lol." self-derogatory way, I mean I've been delighted my collection of tiny art: enamel pins, stitch markers, stickers, small prints. 💕

Here's my tiny art display/magnet strip by my computer, which got a few new things today! Have I mentioned that magnet pin backs are my new favourite thing for enamel pins?

@terri@social.afront.org avatar

On a related note, please tell me about your solutions for storing the stickers that are waiting for a good home? I don't want to take the backs off and use a traditional sticker book because I like rotating them in and out to get pinned on magnet boards or tucked into the front of clear bins. Maybe a photo album or something?

Trying the new Larch Peds pattern from Laura Nelkin!

I did the cast on and first few rows a couple of times before I settled on casting on to a spare cable (without needles attached), but I'm moving along now! Definitely requires some concentration, but that's what I wanted today to go with my audiobook.

I'm reading The Hellion's Waltz to go with the virtual book club. I went into this blind and didn't realize there would be so much about weaving and textile technology, worker's rights, and pianos. I'm in chapter 4 and our leads have barely spoken but I'm still having fun. 🎹🧶🎀

It still doesn't look like a sock*, but I've turned the heel and knit the heel flap stitches.

I'll definitely be using "Lola's pick up line" as a technique again.Looping around a cable so you could skip the pick up part and just knit once the heel flap is done was pretty great once I got the hang of it.

Like with the provisional cast on step, I found all the extra needles got in the way (and I accidentally knit with the wrong one once) so I used just the cable for the pickup until I was ready to knit those stitches, then I put a tip on. (If anyone here also uses the chiaogoo tiny needles, you can use a pear safety pin through the cable hole in lieu of a stopper if you want.) .

  • For those familiar with this designer, I've clearly reached the thong stage. 🩲😂

Larch Peds progress: I've made it to the "boring" straight foot part after the gusset and the yarn has gifted me with stripes. 💕🖤🧡

My foot looks kind of blue in the photo but I promise that's due to the sunlight in here and I'm not actually freezing with half a sock on 🥶

Yarn is from Fully Spun and the colour is called Flamingo in the Yard.

Sock #2 is moving along nicely. I definitely get a little more knitting time while on vacation, even if I had GSoC mentoring stuff I had to do today. Tomorrow is zoo day though so

Honestly, I'm going to miss having Fridays off if my boss ever actually makes a decision on having work pay for more of my time again

Read a book I backed on kickstarter, had a cup of coffee, put a heel in my "zoo sock" so I can go back to carrying a tiny ball of yarn and leaving my contrast colour at home. Next up, some minor sewing and woodworking!

Ps - the book is about outlaws and magic and not fitting in and an ill-conceived rescue mission so far and I love it.

Snip snip. I haven't been doing much mending the past few weeks but I'm getting plenty of finishing done! Drying the wrap in the sun was nice and easy but of course the sun also means it's too warm to actually wear it.

@weaving

The wrap and a pair of scissors are sitting on my lap in the sun. The woven wrap has a number of threads still sticking out of it that need trimming.

Off the loom!

Something went horribly wrong with the edge tension in my warp and it was super tight for a bit in the middle, but I'm carefully manually "fixing" it by working extra yarn in to even out the tension. Still, if anyone's got great advice/blog posts about how to not screw up my edges in future, I clearly need some help since this happened the last time I did a wider wrap on the rigid heddle too.

Hatch is suspicious, but I think it'll be usable as a wrap even if I can't make it completely flat before I give up and try to wet block it. 😅

@weaving

The same woven cloth as before but this time it's laid out on the deck in the sun and my dog, Hatch, a black lab mix, is giving it a suspicious look while he sits sphinx style beside it. The woven piece is warped with variegated pink/orange/purple yarn and the weft alternates between that and white in big chunky 7cm-ish wide stripes.

Glow quilt in daylight and dark!

This quilt was absolutely inspired by the lightning bolt white on white glowy Halloween fabric (from Ruby Star Society). I wanted to echo the shape when it glowed so I chose the Step This Way pattern (free from Moda) with the zig zags. I love how it looks in the dark!

Pieced back because I didn't have 4 meters of anything on hand and my kid decided he wanted animals and green (he loves making up stories about the houses on the back of his other quilt!). I tried not to be too fussy about it as I went since I know it's going to be covered in nosebleed dots and abused for blanket forts. I can see lots of ways I could have done better but I'm pretty happy with it anyhow. 💚

@fiberarts

Back of the glow quilt. It features a variety of large quarter yard-ish squares of fabrics featuring animals and the colour green.
A close up of the glow quilt in the dark . The white lines on the previous photo are now glowing with a little lightning bolt pattern that is echoed by the large zigzag shape of the quilt lines.

The Rose City Yarn Crawl is happening this weekend. We got stuck behind a train, the yarn store was out of the kit I wanted, we failed to go to Sock Dreams because their retail store is closed, and I missed lunch. But we had an adventure! And I did get the pattern I wanted, so... Success?

Celebrating my ability to read without nausea today (this week's migraine/illness side effect was a doozy) by reading Bea Wolf, the adaptation of Beowolf with kids that has taken my fedi friends list by storm. Okay, maybe it's only been four people reading it but that was enough to make me request it from the library. And it's really fun -- full of language play and epic battles. I don't know that my kid will sit still for it (not enough doggies, although he'd probably like the battle of the pigs) but I enjoyed it.

On the bright side, not being able to read for more than 15 minutes gave me some extra knitting and park time yesterday, so the shawl is coming along. I'm 43% done according to the scale.

Continuing in today's rainbow theme: the Dread Pirate Kid's rainbow sweater is done! 🌈

This is his design: he chose the colours, told me how to do the stripes, and chose 8 different buttons. (I'm going to have to buy more with animals on them!). I used Tin Can Knits' Flax pattern as a base for his vision with a lot of mods. He likes the thumb hole in the sleeves. 👍🏼

I don't actually expect it to get much use as he tends to run warm, but he wore it for a bit today!

Rainbow mend for my mending month! 🌈

More duplicate stitch for another thin spot. The patch is in Knitted Wit "progress pride" and I love it on teensy stuff like this, so it'll probably make a few more appearances this month.

Today's #MarchMending project is socks! These ones had gotten thin but didn't have a hole yet, so I'm using duplicate stitch.

Most common question: can you feel this patch? Yes! But I find after wearing the socks for a few minutes it gets squished and I stop noticing. I've definitely never gotten a blister from a mend (and I'm extremely prone in that spot of my foot otherwise!)

Darning loom from Katrinkles: https://katrinkles.com/collections/mending
(And it looks like they're running virtual workshops if you want to learn how to use one!) The loom works for woven patches but I like it for duplicate stitch too because of the way it stays put.

#mending #VisibleMending #socks #fiberarts @fiberarts

Picture 2: duplicate such was started below the thin spot but we're starting to cover that spot now.
Picture 3: finished patch covers the thin part of the sock. The yarn used to patch isn't identical to the original yarn but it's in somewhat similar blues and greens
Picture 4: The same mend viewed from the inside where the original yarn is more visible integrated into the patch.

I did finish the tiny embroidered sweater before the tree got put away. (Per child orders it stays to the end of Feb so we'll probably put it away this weekend.)

Crochet is still the most common craft on the tree, I think.
