Today in the UK it's the State Opening of Parliament and the #KingsSpeech - where a man dressed in ermine robes and a bejewelled crown, sitting on a golden throne, announces plans to tackle a cost of living crisis.

Hah been so busy looking at pumpkins I almost forgot about the #Apple #ScaryFast thing in just under 2 hours.
Has Apple ever done one of these things in the evening? That’s kind of weird all by itself.

thehatfox,

@Wraithe They have nearly always been morning events I think. Perhaps now they are mostly prerecorded Apple wants to go with different times.

thehatfox,

@arstechnica I think this an interesting argument. A photographer explores a physical space, an AI user explores a “latent space”, they both apply their judgement and intuition in what is finally “captured” as an image or work. If one is eligible for copyright perhaps the other should too.

Of course this is separate argument to whether an AI itself can be assigned copyright, or the legitimacy of using models trained on “unlicensed” data.

The British power outlet and plug should be standardized, everywhere.

thehatfox,

@Linux_Is_Best As a British person, they are great - but make sure to never step on one. They tend to land prongs up, and those prongs are fair more painful than any peice of Lego could be.

The Apple Watch S9 design may not have changed much, but at least this means all existing watch bands will still fit. I shudder a little every time I hear a rumour the band design or fitting might change.

On September 1, 2000, a true legend was born - the Nokia 3310.

The Nokia 3310 wasn't just a phone; it was an icon of resilience. Its sturdy design made it nearly indestructible. You could drop it, toss it, and it would still function flawlessly.

While smartphones have evolved into powerful mini-computers, the Nokia 3310 remains a symbol of simpler times.

I bet every Nokia 3310 still has a 100% battery life

thehatfox,

@SinclairSpeccy I found one in a drawer the other week and it turned on just fine. I didn’t have a proper size SIM card to hand to try using it fully unfortunately. Still plays a good game of Snake though!

thehatfox,

@cliffwade My desktop has an internal combo CD/DVD/Bluray/HD-DVD drive but it doesn't get a lot use now. I considered removing it but I've lost the blanking plate for the slot in my case.

Goodbye old friend, one of my most used apps goes to the big App Store in the sky. However, on a happier note the future looks bright with and growing rapidly. I hope they will inspire apps of the same quality as Apollo.

EU wants “readily removable” batteries in devices soon—but what does that mean?

Should you have to melt glue? Which tools do you need? What about pricing?

thehatfox,

@arstechnica Personally I think going back to swappable batteries is a step back. USB power backs have made swapping batteries for travel obsolete. Not having a battery door means a more compact and robust design. By all means stop using super strong glues that need chemicals and hot plates to remove. A phone battery should last 2-3 years, it needs to be serviceable, but I would or want to sacrifice features like reliable waterproofing for tool less battery replacement.

I dont remember who said it here on Mastodon, but that made me remember it.

If you want to extract a tar.gz file you just download, just think in german.

tar xzf
tar extract ze file

and if you want to create a .tar.gz archice:

tar czf
tar compress ze file

Ofcourse you can add "v" in order to have it verbose :)

#Linux

thehatfox,

@selea I remember a poster in an old computer lab from years ago that had something similar.

tar xzvf
"extract zee various files"

tar czvf
"compress zee various files"

I think I read another variant in a Slashdot comment once too. I wonder where this originated?

The brand new rescan of CVG 175 - June 1996 (UK) has just been added to the preliminary magazine catalogue.

Be sure to grab the version from the preliminary section to get this brand new version and not from the completed section, as that is the old one which was done in 2012 with older equipment and editing techniques.

I'm curious, how do you access your home's instance while on the go?

(Boosts fine, of course.)

Edit: option 3 is meant to include access to a local instance via VPN. It just that adding "VPN" would have broken the character limit for the poll option.

thehatfox,

@xahteiwi I use a local install and can access via VPN. I also have use the HomeKit integration to add lights and heating to Apple Home, which is accessible remotely for via iCloud and is easier for the rest of the family. Home Assistant app notifications can also be received remotely via Firebase, I only learned that recently.

@kylewritescode I thought they would have announced the launch at WWDC next week, it’s been delayed a while. I’m guessing if they are getting the Mac launch out of the way now it’s likely the Apple VR version will be in the keynote instead. It’s a popular VR title so it will be interesting to see what new features the Apple headset might bring to it.

Mad Max Fury Road poster

thehatfox,

@djlink Waterworld is a really under-appreciated film. Most people only know it as the butt of jokes, but it’s a fun film with a good (if somewhat implausible) concept. For those who haven’t seen it before, watch the extended version, which adds a bit more worldbuilding.

Rebuilding a 2Gb #raspberryPi 4B & when I powered it on I had smoke coming out of the SD slot, & it wasn't a little bit either.

Turned out the SD card got damaged at some point & there's a crack going across the card.

You can see where it started burning which is on part of said crack.

The PI seems fine with another SD card.

Now trying to think how the card got damaged.

thehatfox,

@peter The micro SD slot on some Pis seem very tight, I’ve had to resort to tweezers or even pliers to get enough grip on the card to get them out sometimes. Maybe the tight slots can stress the cards enough to crack.
