breadandcircuses, to environment

We know, and have known for a long time, that "carbon offsets" are a scam. (See https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/109449916188231905)

Another thing you'll hear about is "carbon capture and storage" or CCS, which is also bogus, just more greenwashing by the fossil fuel industry. (See https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/109621904828658771)

And the latest hot idea is direct air capture (DAC), where companies promise to strip carbon right out of the air, almost like magic. (See https://www.axios.com/2023/08/22/climate-carbon-direct-air-capture-oil-industry)

The US government is pouring billions into this concept, not because they think it will ever work — they know it won't — but because it allows them to pretend they're doing something positive about the climate crisis, while in reality they're telling their fossil fuel buddies that Business As Usual is here to stay.

And it's working. Corporate news outlets are on board promoting the plan, and everyone is happy. 😃

Especially the oil industry!

Here's a quote from Vicki Hollub, CEO of Occidental Petroleum:

“We believe that our direct capture technology is going to be the technology that helps to preserve our industry over time. This gives our industry a license to continue to operate for the 60, 70, 80 years that I think it’s going to be very much needed.”

For once, an oil executive is NOT lying. She's telling the truth, and that truth is going to kill us all.

@breadandcircuses just saw my boss publish a study in Science that the carbon offsets are used to offset almost 300% of the actual carbon sequestered in trees not cut down in REDD projects.

As you finish tasks, close any related browser tabs, documents, communications, or app windows that you don’t need anymore.

This digital decluttering of your workspace will help clear your field of view, give you closure on the completed task, and most importantly, delay you from starting on any other work.

Overheard 2 businessmen discussing corporate office changes so that employees "won't feel like just a cog in a machine."

They came up with these 'great' strategies:

  • Rearrange the cubicles
  • Art on the walls
  • Seat managers closer to employees
  • More team fun events

Notably not discussed:

  • More pay
  • Profit sharing
  • More ownership of decisions & input
  • Recognition of employee successes
  • More PTO and/or work-life flexibility
  • WFH options

Good luck guys! 😆

My kid absolutely loves Goat Simulator.

You are a goat. You are walking around in an open world sandbox – kind of similar to Grand Theft Auto. Except everything is silly, people are ridiculous, and havoc is wreaked everywhere you go.

As a goat, you do whatever you want. Want some fun on the trampoline? Have at it. Go skateboarding? That’s cool too. Destroy a prim and proper party at an art gallery? That happens in Goat Simulator.

Nothing is serious about Goat Simulator. It’s over the top. There aren’t any missions, but there are points for doing certain stuff such as licking a car.

Kids love it because Goat Simulator is childish in every way. It let’s you cause mischief in the most delightful way possible. So much of the fun of Goat Simulator is finding out what will unexpectedly happen when you do a thing.

Upon release, critics complained that Goat Simulator was too “simple”. Well, it’s certainly not Civilization or WoW. But so what? Simple can be good and fun. And more importantly, simple can be accessible.

Goat Simulator is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. And it’s “verified” for Steam Deck. It’s been released on every major console – though not the latest PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. And it’s even been released on iOS and Android too.

This is definitely a good time waster. At the very least, you’ll have a laugh.

Return to Office mandates are counterproductive and destroy morale. They also make your team less productive. They’re worker-hostile and work-hostile. So why do them? https://fortune.com/2023/08/01/research-damaging-results-mandated-return-to-office-worse-than-we-thought-rto-remote-work-careers-leadership-gleb-tsipursky/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon
