So much energy going into AI chatbots. I'm curious what you think. Do you find AI chatbots useful? Are they useful enough that you are willing to pay to use them? Or do you think they are over hyped and not useful to you at all?

#Apple and #Google are still busily at work figuring out how to "DRM the Web".

Google's trial balloon was in part to fool us into thinking we'd won and they stopped. No. They're just going to find a way to do it that maybe we won't notice or fight against as hard.

Mainstream news media sites are getting better at thwarting the #InternetArchive and its #WaybackMachine. I would like to know how the browser vendors are assisting the media with these countermeasures because I'm certain they are.

@mima another facet: why aren't members part of the decision to block an instance? Presumably members involved in the decision would remember the results and all the discussion leading up. There's a misguided desire to run mini-Twitters prevalent on Fedi. Mastodon is built on the assumption that everyone has a well funded Trust & Safety team; the builders cargo culting from Big Tech without considering if it's good for Smol Community. Plus Gargamel wants to be a tech overlord and he's in charge.

@mima as Evan points out in YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION, we tolerate an awful lot of undemocratic institutions in our supposed democracies. From authoritarian employers to authoritarian Fedi operators. Where's the community decision making? Why is it absent?

Maybe we should fix the culture then build the tech we want instead of having such poorly fitting clothes and wondering why they bunch and chafe all the time.

@mima hell, my MAIN is on an instance run by an anonymous, mostly unaccountable star chamber of admins and that's AFTER we had a rogue admin get booted for 0-day defederating an instance that techdotlgbt was having drama with. I called it out and essentially received a shrug from the owner. For all I know, it's a star chamber of 1 admin and he was the rogue operator.

So, real question: at this point, even if there is a ceasefire, what will it accomplish? It'll be like a pause and little else. Because the IDF has literally murdered q0s of thousands of civilians and they continue to make life synonymous with Hell in Gaza...do you think people will forget that and let bygones be bygones?

At first, I only saw "pause" as a cynical political ploy. And from a lot of people it's probably used that way.

Then I read about Israeli citizen and hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin. I don't know what his wellspring is, but he never gives up fighting for peace. He fights for a pause, because during a pause it'll be easier to fight for a longer ceasefire. He seems to always go for the next available step to reduce harm in some way. No pause, he fights for child hostage release.

I don't know how you end a millenia long blood feud. I think Gershon takes a very tactical, work on the nearest problem, then the next, then the next approach. I don't know where his hope comes from. I don't know why he doesn't see it as futile. Gershon Baskin's hope gives me hope.

@Jgbird we have Golden Flicker's in our tree in our front yard. I only learned about Flickers a few months ago. The striking striping and spotting (and a chevron on the breast) caught my attention. Beautiful even though the coloration is muted.

It's frustrating and ironic that the most polished community projects are probably the ones suffering internally from the most fucked up incentives. Editor of SFF books would certainly be welcome on dice.camp. My husband's main is there and I have an ALT on it. It's a chill gaming and TTRPG centric community, but anything within the guidelines goes. Well maintained.

Sage errs on the side of silencing large instances like mastodon.social; so, ill suited for self-promotion? That's a worthwhile tradeoff to ask your partner about if you haven't already: where on the line between safety and reach would she like to start out?
