Good news, everyone! The Yurok Tribe will now co-manage 125 acres of Redwood forest, a gateway to the state/national park, along with the National Park Service.

The tribal nation signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with Redwood national and state parks and the non-profit Save the Redwoods League.

so this is a bit wild

i've got an oldie iPad 2 running iOS 9.3.5. this has some expired root certificates which results in several apps not working properly. Plex will load, but it won't be able to negotiate with your plex server, for instance.

since apple doesn't offer new iOS updates for it (with refreshed certificates).. it seemed like i was kinda stuck.

as it turns out, and is documented nowhere aside from a post on reddit, you can manually download your own root certificate - and iOS lets you install it without complaint.

if you're on an ancient iOS device, just point its Safari browser to this url: https://letsencrypt.org/certs/isrgrootx1.der

tap Install when prompted - and you've got working certificates again!

this just breathed new life into a 10+ year old iPad, which will become a bedtime plex viewer.

A big #Mastodon problem is that things appear broken and we're told "it's by design" and then later things appear broken and we're told "it's because decentralized" and then later things appear broken and we're told "it's an outage or DDOS" and then later things appear broken and we're told "it's folks got defederated by a rogue admin during some drama" and then later things appear broken because they are.

It is a fucked system and impressively it's better than the alternatives in many ways.

As someone who has struggled to recover from mental illness, as someone who is a resister & activist, and as someone who is queer, I can tell you with 100% confidence that Proposition 1 will be used to put people like me in "mental health prison" like was done to Britney Spears and many others with less resources to fight it (and look what was done to Britney).

I truly want you to vote today even if you're my ideological opposite. The collective spell of participatory governance is far too powerful for even fascists to corrupt entirely. I imagine wannabe authoritarians wilt a little every time society compells them to cast a ballot instead of them getting to bark an order to imposse their will. Going to the polls for wannabe authoritarians and their fans has to feel like a tiny defeat.

Federation, huh?

If I set up a Mastodon server in my Homelab and block mastodon.social's IPs, I will still have a federated Mastodon instance.

If I set up a PDS and block BlueSky's IPs, I have a resource hog and nothing more.

The difference is extremely stark. I don't get why people don't see that, or chose to ignore it.
