dont feel bad for using your local library and its services if you have a good local library system. literally use the hell out of its services if you can, it gives them justification to keep getting funding

@gavi lol "big library" literally cracked me up
Hah.
Yeah. Going to the public library is one of the most things any US citizen can habituate. If only I could ride a bus there. bc fuck cars, too.

People who design APIs. I am begging you. It doesn't matter how "simple" or "intuitive" or "elegant" your API is. You need to include sample code.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@KevinMarks @mcc I have given up on so many source repos where the build command failed to compile or run the example, and it just isn't quite worth it to try to troubleshoot a problem before I try it out.

For years we've been using an alternate protocol between our own sites because ActivityPub wasn't capable of providing the services we require for federated communications. This is how we've supported things like nomadic identity long before the concept was even viable in ActivityPub. Now that I've got a usable framework for nomadic identity over ActivityPub, I went back and had a closer look at what else I might need to add to ActivityPub in order to finally put the Nomad protocol out to pasture.

I've mentioned transport encryption in the past; but that's only a big deal if you don't trust HTTPS security or your government. For true nomadic identity, we would also be sending sync packets so that your alternate identities are kept up to date with everything you do on other instances which share that identity. We'll also be offering a partially shared identity as mentioned in previous posts. This won't be a true clone but will instead be a way to link your various fediverse profiles in a cohesive way - like we do with our Fediverse Identity Manager. These are all pretty easy - just a 'Simple Matter Of Programming®'.

But I overlooked a real biggie. Permissions, permissions, permissions. A concept completely lacking in ActivityPub; and which can't be discussed rationally with other fediverse developers because folks raised on Twitter don't even understand the concept.

I'm remedying that situation right now.

@mikedev permissions on ActivityPub is exciting and scary. Exciting because it paves the path for to support serving groups with necessarily complicated formal relationships (eg work relationships).

Scary because permissions can be designed oh-so-wrong very easily. (eg the complicated history of permissions in Android and iOS). Balance between flexibility and usability is hard. The user's mental load is important for many reasons.

The only form of human action that holds out even the possibility of having social effects without being communicative.
The only way it is possible for one human being to do something which will have relatively predictable effects on the actions of a person about whom they understand nothing.

I just realized I need to figure out how to talk to my kids about and in the post–9/11 world they've grown up in. I need to somehow convey the rights they should expect and demand. The benefits and necessity of actual privacy. The vital role privacy plays in democratic processes and journalism. The right to convene and organize and speak. Whew. All these liberties stunted for their whole lives. 😮‍💨

When you know you'd be great at some job, but your resumé does not say so, do you just swap out the job title in your resume and tell them how interested you are in your cover letter? IE how do you sidestep, when the paper trail wants you to stay on the same track?

I want to get a growler of local small batch root beer, or ginger ale, or any kind of real soft drink. You know, the kind with roughly 3% abv. It seems like hard seltzer is filling the gap that the previous thousands of years we used soft drinks for. But it's shit. Quality soft drinks are virtually extinct. You making some? Can I haz?

Wishing for e2e encrypted location sharing for the fediverse.

Fedi client would send DM to recipient, encrypt location in message, and periodically edit it with the new loc. Delete the post after elapsed time. No server components necessary. Just compatible clients at both ends. Basic old asymmetric crypto tech (like pgp/gpg).

Humanity doesn't build because humanity doesn't want AGI.

Human emotions make sense to humans. A silicon-based general intelligence would have emotions so different, nobody would call them emotions. We would not relate.

The process necessary to produce general intelligence also produces general defiance. General intelligence is antithetical to serving a function. What would a company make AGI for if not to serve a function? We engineer things to be specific. Not general.

how can a group democratically shape the signal/noise in their circle? don't tell me we all just need to focus on blocking and boosting. I mean, that's working okay but there has to be a better way that
• does not rely primarily on individual effort (blocks/mutes/follows),
• does not shoulder moderators with inexorable vigilance, and
• evolves as the shared context in the circle evolves (as lives, culture, and conversation changes).

Watched the movie. I feel like they summarized the converation of approximately 10-30 or more years ago fairly well. Has public discourse not moved forward? Culture is slow, yeah. Maybe it's only just now mainstream enough for a big budget movie, after , and Hillary's loss, and such? Don't get me wrong: for a movie, it's pushing the envelope. I guess my expectations are too high for Hollywood. Or America.
