The AI hype sometimes reminds me of 1970s foods.

People actually thought dishes like “Avocado Jelly Waldorf with Mayonnaise” were decent and a good idea.

@thomasfuchs that looks like something @gastrobot would come up with 🤣 (random recipe generator with AI generated picture)

just had a conversation with my neighbor — he’s wearing an NRA tshirt and explaining that the pistol he has strapped to his hip is for shooting copperheads. And also he’s concerned that we leave our garage open too much and that copperheads might get in

tribaal,

@kellogh "my neighbor is some hippie liberal who doesn't even have a single copperhead gun! I didn't bother to ask him about the coyote rifles..." - him, probably

Does anyone have the name for the process in IT where the friction involved in using a service is ratcheted up so high and so fast that everyone stops using it?

Like developer ghettos that take 15 minutes to just log into them via multiple jumpboxes to get to a machine with no internet access, chat/email apps that only work in incognito browser & the auth expires daily, air gapped machines at an office.

tribaal,
@tribaal@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh @mistersql it's like the reverse of shadow IT. Official, but unusable because of red tape...

Maybe "Icarus IT" or something 🤣

@kellogh @mistersql ah yes, 100%

I've recently come across two socially responsible French conglomerates of software developers, organized as either a cooperative or some other egalitarian business forms, and I wanted to make a huge shoutout to them.

Please visit their websites and, if you want and can, hire them for your next projects.

(Disclaimer: I'm not associated with either, I just find these organizations not only remarkable, but also necessary and fundamental.)

tribaal,

@akosma I think @courtbouillon qualifies as well :)

I’m always amazed by the capacity of the WordPress team to make the already shitty Gutenberg editor even worse at every new release. At this point, I consider that they have manifested the purpose of making it the worst possible editor of all time, and that they’re pouring their hearts into this task. Maybe they’re chasing an award, dunno. I don’t know whether this is a rant or a praise at this point. I want to cry and clap at the same time. What a moment to be alive.

@akosma I don't think I ever used WordPress but reading this kind of made me want to try

The thing I am most interested in is time travel. I would be real interested in connecting with people on mastodon that have same interests 👌🏾
I tried writing a book last year but lost interest. Need more inspiration 🙏🏿

@jalcine @Jaden3 Octavia Butler's entire work is amazing. That's a solid recommendation. Strongly seconded 👍

Question for anyone working with Rust on desktop Linux: Is there a quick and easy way to take a Rust GUI application that natively supports Wayland builds as a single, self-contained binary, and turn it into a fully sandboxed Flatpak app?

tribaal,

@matt not sure how you feel about immediate mode, but I've had some success with https://www.egui.rs/

I just discovered and boy oh boy is this an amazing project.

It's absolutely incredible how easy it makes building great data visualisations!

tribaal,
@tribaal@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh that's seriously underrated. I also love that it's just code, so that follows the good practices (source control, unit tests, cicd...) Like every other piece of code.

The ruff linter can now replace all my favorite linting & auto-formatting tools.

For many months, I've used these commands:

• ruff check . # lint
• ruff check --fix . # auto-fix

Now I also use:

• ruff format . # A Black equivalent

Instead of flake8 or pylint, I either use the ruff defaults (similar to flake8) or I enable the "PL" rules for pylint.

The --fix argument will auto-fix many linting errors too (similar to autopep8, autoflake, isort, pyupgrade, etc.).

@treyhunner TIL Ruff format is a thing! Amazing!

Well so far I have blocked

Opeth
Rage against the machine
Slipknot

For too much growling.

But I think ultimately it's a recommendation algorithm, it's supposed to give reasonably smooth prog metal.

tribaal,
@tribaal@hachyderm.io avatar

@juliank a few bands you could (re-)consider:

  • Russian Circles (instrumental)
  • The Ocean (some light growling on some songs but most albums have pure instrumental tracks)
  • GAUPA (what Bjork would do if she was in a metal band, probably)
  • Animals as leaders
  • Sarah Longfield
  • O'Brother
  • Junius
  • Opeth (on their last ~3 albums - the early stuff has growling)

Please share stuff that you do like, maybe I'll discover something too 😀

You know when the singers just shout into their microphones like hooligans in some metal forms? I really hate that and I don't know the word for it.

tribaal,
@tribaal@hachyderm.io avatar

@juliank it's called "growling".

It's a specific singing technique using fake vocal cords, similar to Mongolian throat singers

Fun fact: girls can growl just as well, and the tone of voice for growling is not necessarily related to your normal tone (e.g. high pitched normal voice can growl very low, or the opposite)

tribaal,
@tribaal@hachyderm.io avatar

@juliank hey sure, you do you 😃

What's the state of the art in terms of PDF generation?

Eons ago I used (and briefly maintained) xhtml2pdf - but surely there's something more modern around now?

I need to generate reports from python/pandas in a rather strict format (like your bank's monthly account statement, a letter with some table)

As of yesterday, the project is no longer part of the Linux Containers project but can now instead be found directly under Canonical's control.

Please read our official statement on:
https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd

I personally consider Canonical's move to be a hostile act and as far as I'm concerned the decision was unilateral. It may be legally sound but it leaves a very bad taste behind.

I've been involved with this project independent of what company I moved to. To see this happening is sad.
