For all the talk of “maker schedule vs manager schedule,” I don’t think we appreciate just how much management and coaching benefits from focus time and deep work and open space to think and help others.

A back to back jam packed agenda is the problem for everyone.

Imagine the coaching that could be done if you had two solid hours to help someone? Imagine the career development if you had an hour to plan and think through someone’s growth before speaking with them on it?

Managers suffer from a “manager’s schedule” just as much as makers.

@trisweb certainly. For me the start of each day is for responding to me or open task list items, the middle of the day is for meetings, and the end of the day is for thinking, planning, and other macroscale tasks. When mentoring junior and middle managers I say things like "schedule an hour of staring out the window time." And by schedule I mean schedule. Block it off in your calendar so it doesn't get filled. Treat it as real work, which it is.

@trisweb

Over-utilisation never helped anyone. Just think of how fun it is when your CPU is pinned at 100% or when the roads are chock full of cars with none of them moving.

This is a serious problem in many organisations, because it removes their ability to respond to change in a timely manner. It also greatly reduces management's ability to improve conditions for the makers, as it gets harder for feedback to reach them.

@universalhub first week of the inbound Haverhill line only running one train from Reading at 7:30am all day is going great… only 5 cars, no double deckers, every station packed. Lovely.

@trisweb so any use by partners like openai makes all derivative works licensed under creative commons then? So they must provide attribution?
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
I'd like to see open ai in compliance then please.

I dare you to finish a bag of potatoes without growing them.

What am I doing wrong? Do they just go in the fridge despite everything I’ve been taught?

@trisweb dark, dry-ish, ideally somewhat cooler than room temperature.

My mom always stored them in a paper grocery bag along an outside wall

Is there a way to tell to manually pull a thread from its home server? Like a big sync button or something?

I see far too many posts without their replies and with incorrect star & repost counts… maybe there’s something up with my federation queues? 🤔

I just looked up the elevation of Boston Logan airport—an airport built on fill in Boston Harbor—and then did one of those sighs when I found out.

(It was a turbulent approach, I was in an aisle seat, and I just wanted to have a reference for when we would land to compare with the altitude on the flight tracker. We landed safely.)

@trisweb Boston has always been quite a turbulent one when I’ve been at this time of year. Seems to be quite windy generally.

I've decided to get my license. I already know most of the fundamentals so with a little study should be able to pass just fine. I think it's an important infrastructure to keep going and expand, especially these days.

I will also continue to expand the network on the North Shore of Boston, with hopes of having it support connection all the way to Boston Proper (we have line of sight spots up here directly to the city and surrounding areas!)

On top of that, I've got the hardware and ability to set up a MassMesh mesh wifi node. The network is small, but a good proof of concept for a higher bandwidth community networking solution independent of the trunk internet.

Any tips or encouragement from anyone appreciated!

@trisweb I've licensed for a few years but only now got into license-free . They certainly complement each other well.

Great thing with amateur radio is it is more than only voice. I've been enjoying VarAC on low power HF from Africa to USA.

Try study past exam papers if you can as that helped me a lot in passing my exam. I also did a weekly classroom course over2 or 3 months.

We need to start contending with the fact that not only is AI simply not helpful, it's actively harmful—to the environment, to our continued survival on this planet, to our society, and to human progress.

We need to stop the AI train before it drags us off the cliff it's barreling toward.

It's not enough to simply ignore it and roll our eyes.

"In 2023, we returned more cash to shareholders and produced more oil and natural gas than any year in the company's history," Chevron chief executive Mike Wirth boasted.

We will not survive on this earth unless fossil fuel companies are deliberately and systematically dismantled by force.

@trisweb This is exactly true. Consumers will always demand more. Good governance requires people who can say ‘no.’ Politics almost assures that we will never have that.

…That should get Wall Street and the C suite to high tail it in the other direction.
